Craigslist question re: so-called ghosting...

What is it -- why do they do it -- and how sophisticated is it?

I posted an ad, it shows up in my account as being posted, it shows up in a search using a key word ---- but when I go to the listings (the category), it is NOT there.

What gives?

Has my listing been 'ghosted?'

If so, why don't they just outright reject the listing, instead of trying to make me believe it has been posted, when it hasn't?

What's the purpose?

Thanks.

Ghosting is a common problem on craigslist. The only thing that works is to witch IPs and keep resubmitting the ads. I used to hie a team to do that but I dropped it since its not really my style to "spam" Craigslist.

Id venture to better platforms to get traffic, bette rin the long run anyway than the cat-n-mouse game

Yes, your ad has likely been ghosted.

Ghosting is one of the many steps that Craigslist has taken to try to combat the CL "spammers." Unfortunately, occasionally "real" advertisers get hit too. Collateral damage.

Ghosting happens when your ads are flagged too often in a specific period of time - all of which contain some common element. The element could be a URL, the IP you posted from, or a specific phrase. The only way to combat ghosting is to insure than none of your ads contain any signature of any kind.

Now obviously, if your ad has been ghosted, it or others like it have been flagged multiple times in the past. If you are getting multiple ads flagged, are you certain that you don't fall within the group that Craig was targeting when he implemented the ghosting?

I'm not being judgmental -- I'm just trying to help you to understand.

If they pick me out as a spammer of CL, then the threshold is VERY low! I only sell things on CL like a normal person. Household stuff -- all on my local CL site. The ghosted one is one that I have done under services -- and I've done similar ones recently unter the same category -- so maybe that's why.

Does that mean ANY ads I post now will be ghosted?

Also, WHY do they ghost ads? Why not just notify me that the ad(s) in question have been REJECTED? Why go through the FARCE of making me believe the ads HAVE been posted, when they HAVEN'T been. What's the advantage in that?

In battle, it's MUCH more effective to wound enemy soldiers than to kill them. The reason is that your opponent expends way more energy/resources caring for the wounded than the dead.

This is a similar tactic by CL. If spammers knew their ad was rejected, they'd just create a new ad. If they don't know, the ghosted ad might be posted for a long time - taking that "slot" away from another spam ad. It's just a way to waste the resources of the spammers.

The cl algorithms for ghosting ads are fairly complex. While Craig and Jim won't share specifics, anecdotal evidence shows ads can be ghosted based on a combination of html usage, isp, duplicate ads, overposting, and spam probability index.

One thing to watch for is reposting to try to keep your ad at the top of the search results. You can repost your ad every 48 hours - as long as you delete your prior ad. Best to wait about 20 min between deleting and re-posting.

While it still seems that some people seemingly have no problem spamming craigslist, there are a few honest people hurt along the way. And I know they have been cracking down across the board.

You can post a link to your ad in the cl help forum. (not allowed to post live links, but if you go to your craigslist home page, you'll see a link for HELP under the Discussions Forums section) But it is user manned and sometimes they can be a bit abrasive.

You are also welcome to email me privately at jenna at craigslist4everyone DOT com. I will try to help you figure out what might be causing the problem.

      Regards,

      Jenna Lloyd

    TW,

I tried to post something under services the other day. They now require that you provide your phone number so they can call you before your ad is approved.

Maybe that's why it's been Ghosted??

Ghosting is ridiculous. It's an uneven, incongruent, out of synch form of justice, almost corrupt in nature. And this is why:

      1) I tried posting one (1) Missed Connections ad. Just one MC ad. And it was ghosted! And no, I didn't try posting it anywhere else. I'll say it again to drive my point home: I POSTED ONLY ONE MISSED CONNECTIONS AD, JUST ONE. Note that it was not flagged off. I went to my CL account page and the ad was green - green as in all systems go. But still, the ad did not show up when I went to Missed Connections. I could not see it, I did not see it.

      2) I'm trying to sell a car. Just one car. Not 10 different cars. Not 100 different cars. Just one car. It's a popular car with car enthusiasts. Because it's popular, I tried placing the ad in 4 or 5 different cities located in the western United States. But only 2 or 3 of the ads are showing up, the others are ghosted.

Sean, I'll try your tips out and see if I can get my car ad to stick. Thanks for posting.

P.S. I read elsewhere that if you use a name and phone number in your ad you might want to change your name (or omitt it) and change your phone number or omitt that, too. Hope that helps others out there that are in the same boat as me

This thred really gets close, but I need a little more clarification...

When I try to list an item (usually in Furniture or Antiques), I get a message telling me to get phone verified..

it used it be if I went to a differnt ISP location this would go away, but now it seems to be tied to my computer not the ISP..

reading this thread I decided to try a few things, I deleted all my cookies in fact all my internet content... I rebooted and made a new email and a nbew CL account... but I get the same thing... does any one know how CL is identifing my computer??? this it the only thing I have not changed... oh also some days I can list one or two items (doesn't seem to matter what account I used)...

    any ideas for a work - a - round?

    thanks

I use craigslist and have had some success with it, the trick is too stay within their guidelines, don't over post and make sure to always change your ads, I try to never post the same ad, mix it up and make sure you post in the correct category. Oh and one more thing, don't post any affiliate links, your ad will most likely get flagged, so if you are promoting a clickabank product for example, set up a blog or website and send your potential buyers to that site instead (which would then list to your affiliate site).

Like I said, I don't really have a problem with craiglist, you just have to be careful and don't over do it and you should be fine.

first, the last time I read their TOS they said nothing about WHO needs to be Phone verified, just that "some catagories" would. also I have SEEN nothing about how many ads can be posted... so as far as I know I am following their "posted" TOS... but normally I keep about 200 ads up all in the same area and no dups, they get relisted every 7 days (if the item doesn't sell). this has worked for 2 years but in the last two months it has not been working, some days I can post 20-30 and other I can post nothing, in the last two weeks I have only been able to post about 10 items... so, I need a work around and the only think I can think of is a new computer, but this means that craig is accessing my hard disk, I'd really like to know about that!!! (oh and it is not with cookies!)

I used to use a lot of CL posting to drive massive affiliate sales until this issue with ghosting and PVAs. Essentially it looks like your post is posted but it really never gets into the CL network. And then you start eating through mad PVAs at $3-5 a pop because you need US numbers and you have all of this outsourced to a team in India.

I am still very active on Craigslist for Business Opportunities. It can convert very well but doing it at a high volume it not worth the time in my opinion. It is just one of many ways I market my business online.

CL offers a variety of sources for giving your advertisements, but mostly it goes in the ghosted category.

Putting an ad is just as easy like its all done in seconds.. but as you are excited & made your ad in the desired category & it probably goes ghosted

People use anonymous IP's, PVA & many more tricks to do advertisement but CL is the master in its own field & changes it policies at its own.

Simply learn it & it will be a good servant for you forever

CL is BS these days! I just tried posting a legit WH ad to recruit a lead generator (telemarketer) in my city from CL account I've had and used successfully for years and it asked me for a phone verification. I went through that and got the email saying the ad would show in 15 minutes. Ad never shows, but it is still in my CL account and allows me to edit etc.

Funniest thing of all, in the confirm email where it gives you the link to your ad.. I went to the ad, then clicked on the CL generated email that you use to answer an ad... sent an email and guess what... yup, it bounced!!!

Those SOBs set up a fake reply email address on my ghosted ad!

This is really troublesome because this is a white hat legitimate ad!

So now what do I do... try to go the blackhat route to post a legit ad? Is that what it's coming down to at CL?

Craigslist made some drastic changes a few months ago and while trying to fight off spammers, crippled great number of legit posters as well.

Ghosting has a lot to do with your content and/or IP address - if their filters catch a "bad" word, your ad will get ghosted; if your IP comes from a pool used by some major posters, your ad might get ghosted. And "bad" words don't actually sound bad at all - words like iPod, free, etc. (just an example) might trigger their filters.

If all you need is a few daily ads, pay someone to post for you - it will save you a lot of time and headaches.

Does the ghost status for a craigslist account ever expire? Are those ip addresses and accounts forever blocked by their ghosting program?

It depends, if your range was blocked, no it will probably not expire, if just your ip was blocked, then I would see if you can change IPs and post, or try a diff PVA.

There is a lot to ghosting, some of it is mentioned here. With the experience I have with CL (which is quite a bit) ghosting depends on several factors. One thing to keep in mind is that just because your ad is ghosted does not mean they softblocked your IP. Basically softblocking makes it so that you can post, but it will not show. The thing is, they have a tendency to block a range, this is why there used to be aircards that worked great for posting on CL because they pulled a new IP each time, however they have been blocked for the most part. This is one factor to ghosting.

Another factor from what I have experienced is geographic in nature. If you attempt to post outside of your local area, or region, then you will for the most part get ghosted. Just for kicks, as an experiment, I tried posting in other regions where cox was an ISP, and usually I can get those to stick too, which I found interesting.

Something else to consider is ad content, especially in the personals section. I would imagine its tough to get any kind of real ad to stick these days. If you put anything that triggers the CL filters, you are going to get ghosted.

My newer accounts have a lot of "resesting" phone verification issues. My older accounts 1-2 years old have almost no issues, very solid.

Most of the ghosting seems to come from distance postings, and it seems certain areas of Craigs, are "ghost-towns". Way to few listings to be what the public is trying to post.

We always get good results from our car dealer customers on Craigs, but like eBay if they make it more and more difficult they will be overrun by the next "big thing".
