Quick question about .us domains

Hello,

A certain domain I want is unavailable with .com but is available with .us. I was wondering, does the domain extension effect organic SEO optimization? Specifically, will a .us domain extension have a negative effect on my SEO?

Thank you,
Jared Woodruff

Domain extensions has no effect on SEO as .us is used mostly for usa products or services. As we all know .com is king but still if the .com is parked or has irrelevant content then the next extensions has the upper hand to rank for keywords. If all is parked then .US (developed and not parked) has a better chance to rank high.

Who has the .com domain already? Is a spammy site, or are they just sitting on it? I personally would stay away from a .us domain if the .com is already taken by someone else. I bought a .info 2 years ago, and it took much longer than my .com websites to get good rankings. That's just my experience. True, .us is different, but I stick with .com for everything now, and then buy the .us, ect. in addition to it, and 301 redirect it to my .com.

If it is an amazing domain name (1 short keyword) then it might be a different story...

It is a short keyword. It gets over 40k searches a month (Google Keyword Tools) and has just over 40K competing pages for the exact match. ("keyword" with quotes in Google) So I would imagine it is a great keyword, at least I hope it is.

Both the .com and .net domains with just the keyword are taken and parked (no content) but .org actually has content. The .org site is very poor but is 1st on the second page of Google when the keyword is searched without quotes.

There are 2.6 million pages when the keyword is searched without quotes.

I did find a .com domain that has the keyword and another in it: keyword1andkeyword2.com.

Which would be my better option? keyword.us or keyword1andkeyword2.com?

      Thank you,
      Jared

In my experience domain name is important, but not as important as the content and titles on the site. I have a popular keyword phrase that I recently purchased a .com for, without hyphens or anything. I was all excited and thought maybe I could cheat a little and not put as much work into it and still get instant good rankings at least for the domain keyword phrase. (dumb thinking I know....). The result so far? That site is not ranking good at all. Whereas my other sites with good content rank well for keywords that are not in the domain.

For example: search the phrase "travel site" in Google, and you will see that the top ranking sites do not have those words in their domain. Domain name is not really where its all at...IMHO

I'd buy both and redirect the .info to the double-keyword .com name if it made sense to do so. I hope that helps. Best if luck to you!
