Squidoo or Hubpages - What do you prefer?

I have been created lenses lately mainly for the purpose of backlinking.

But I found that my lenses were taking up to a week to get indexed.

Yesterday I created a Hubpage, once again for the purpose of backlinking and it was indexed within minutes and is now ranking #2 for my keyword phrase.

I will continue to do both to get the backlinks, but just wondering if anyone has a preference and if anyone has noticed the different in indexing times between Squidoo and Hubpages.

  • I prefer hubpages. I havent used squid much lately. At one point squidoo wasnt working well. It was loading slow and hub pages had a simpler interface and I grew to like it more. Some of my hubpages have rated really high. I think hubpages is probably the better of the two. Of course I think you should use both.

  • I prefer squidoo because it's more popular than hubpages.

  • Ok, I use both, one week to index or one minute the way I think of it is its still a backlink. Hard part for me is getting them set up while deployed here in Afghanistan, but when I figure a way around this stupid firewall they have set up I am all over it again.

  • Hubpages hands down.

    • But...Why?

I do agree that if you must use ONLY one site, HubPages would be the best option, however, the best results can be realized when you utilize many of these sites in conjunction.

  • I prefer to use both, you can't hurt having more backlinks
  • Both are good.
  • An interesting mix of thoughts. I have accounts in both but I used squidoo initially and am still struggling with it. Needless to say I may have to spend a lot longer time with hub pages because I thought it is not as user-friendly as the former. By the way I am not that savvy with sites that seem cluttered to me.
  • Squidoo is dead in my opinion and they are not very Internet marketing friendly.

Hubpages is where it is at they rank well in the serps, you can add 2 links of your choice, Amazon ads, Google adsense, Kontera.

Now that is what I call monetization. I have close to 100 hubs I actually just finished 2 that I published today.

    No contest in my opinion!

    • They have a business to run, as well. Imagine if they crafted their TOS to let EVERYTHING go from an IM standpoint. IM'ers are notorious for pushing the limits of functionality of platforms, and their business would subsequently take a hit. They have to implement controls.

I don't use them nearly as much as I use to, and "dead", as evidenced by your post, is highly relative. Go ask the guy who always does the Top Christmas Toys Lenses if Squidoo is 'dead'....

IMHO, it's major set back is that it's 'generosity' is lacking. It's just not entirely worth it to me to continue contributing content AND referring people there. There referral system is shoddy and needs a serious extreme makeover.
  • My biggest problem with Hubpages is that they're super strict about removing pages with what they consider to have too many links. I had a 1,000+ word hub up at one point with 4 links, all to different domains, and they banned that sucker right out of existence. I haven't been back since, maybe their policies have changed.

    • So true, but I actually like that and so does google. That is why hubpages rates higher. Yeah it can be a pain but that is how they minimize garbage hubs.
    • I agree about Hubpages. I got two pages banned and there were no links in the article, only the big arrow link. And they said it was too commercial. Then they flagged one of my articles as duplicate content because I also had that article posted on my blog. So I gave up on them...too time consuming with their rules.

  • Why not prefer both? it won't be much of a hassle.
  • my opinion squidoo is best than hubpage.

    • Not to be a jerk here....

But, (and, this isn't directed to just you, gtree), I'd be interested in reading WHY people feel that one platform is better than the other....

Just saying that one is better than the other doesn't really give people something of substance to base a decision of investing time and effort.

Why do you believe Squidoo is better than HubPages?
  • I'm using hubpages. I like it. It is easier to set up. Friendly interface. Squidoo is a bit complicate.
  • You squidoo takes 1 week to index? Every time I make a squidoo lens it takes less than 24 hours to index and rank
    • [1] reply
    • Well I have always had them indexed fast in the past. I had one that was indexed within 24 hours and 3 that have taken a week to get indexed - go figure!
  • Squidoo, because Hubpages removed me for inappropriate content. Squidoo at least allows PG-13~ rated stuff but because of the warning it's probably worthless.

    • Gettysburg, PA, hu? That's not too far from where I live....

If you don't mind me asking, what did they consider "inappropriate content"? There are some pieces of content that are in clear violation of their TOS and editorial guidelines, while, of course, there is that content that flirts with the "grey" area....

  • What about a third option, or are Hubpages and Squidoo simply the best for IM?

Do you send traffic to offers from your Hubs or Lenses or do you send your traffic to your own squeeze page from your Hubs or Lenses?

    Thanks!

    • I personally use them to build backlinks to my own websites or blogs, so these are not the only two that I use, I also submit articles to Ezinearticles and other article directories.

I guess it depends on what you are using them for. With Squidoo and Hubpages you can include affiliate links so you can build a lens or hub and have it linking directly to an offer.
    • I know it's a generic answer, but it just all 'depends' on many variables. One could earn little to nothing on either site, while others could earn quite a bit: it all just depends on your dedication, motivation, and skill. You can produce a plethora of content for both sites, however, that content may not be the RIGHT type of content.

Plus, by virtue of their high PR and authority, people have generally accepted those sites to be the "best" for IM. Many just follow the herd, and, as evidenced by some of the posts in this thread, have very little justification or rationale behind why they even use a particular site....many simply do because its what everyone else uses.

  • I prefer both of them. The more the better I say =). Sure takes more time to do it but few months from now you can have some very good place to update links and rank your sites better. I make pages on hubpages, ezinearticles, squidoo, all the major ones but also do blogs for niches on blogs.com, blogspot.com wordpress.com etc...
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I am using both squidoo and hubpage but could not make any difference.,.for me both are working better..so i prefer both equally...
  • I've always liked hubpages. I guess it's their easy to use interface. Plus, it seems easy to get traffic. Just make sure to post quality information.

I've never gotten around to using Squidoo - even though I'm a big Seth Godin fan.
  • I prefer Hubpages over Squidoo.Nah-nothing personal, I just think it has a better and more friendly interface than the other.

    • I don't really use either that much any more (I mainly just outsource web 2.0 properties for the purpose of backlinks but I'm not really too bothered where they rank). While doing some extensive keyword research over the past few weeks though I've noticed that Hubpages seems to be ranking ALOT better than Squidoo.

I saw quite a few hubs still on page 1 of Google for reasonably competitive keywords, whereas Squidoo was nowhere to be seen (in the niches I was researching anyway).

I used to prefer Squidoo, but I'm definitely thinking of putting some more work into Hubpages - it seems to have alot more potential in terms of ranking well at the moment.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • i think hubpages is better.. even though all my hubs got pulled down for some reason. but yea hubpages rank very well.

    • All your hubs were deleted, Tommy? If you don't mind me asking, what was the subject matter?
      • [1] reply
  • My vote for hubpage definitely.
  • Hubs are best. I found the most effective way is to get a hub with your keywords in the domain (exact match is best), post a unique 1,000 word article and link the hub to your money site.
  • Squidoo is very picky about lenses now so just try putting up a couple of lenses first. Give more priority to Hubpages because it gets indexed fast and isn't so picky like squid
  • I don't really like (nor have a real use for) either site/platform, to be honest.

But if I had to choose - and it would be purely by appearance and aesthetics - I'd probably choose Squidoo.

Also, I've actually earned (and continue to earn) a bit of money from Squidoo, you see, and in contrast, none of my HubPages (of which, admittedly, there are few) even have their outgoing links "do-followed".

    • Squidoo's new attempts to incentivize the platform are actually quite cool. They have implemented a bit of a points system that give you points whenever you sign in, visit other lenses, comment, or just about anything else. I certainly wouldn't use it exclusively or become reliant upon just one Web 2.0 property though.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • This is definitely because most platforms have actually developed themselves around a degree of 'maintenance' being required. For example, on HubPages, "maintenance" is required not only to obtain the conversion of your "No-follow" links to "Do-Follow", but frequent contributions are also required to maintain that score, as well.

Squidoo does something similar with their teired system attempting to incentivize "original" (continually updated) content in accordance to what they perceive search engines 'wanting'.

Some degree of incentivization is required to make a platform like that "work", however, as with Squidoo and HubPages, people can simply get bored....plus, their efforts may appear futile when small earnings trickle in after so much time invested.
  • Why not both? Diversity is never bad. Squidoo seems to be much like Hubpages since they have started heavily reviewing the pages.
  • I like HubPages even though they made me take down 1/2 of my hubs as being against Google's TOS (which I would still argue that they werent!)
    • [2] replies
    • Did they cite a particular aspect of the TOS that you were in violation of, AFI? They said you were against Google's TOS (Adsense, I assume?) or their own TOS?
    • Personally i prefer Hubpages. I too notice that the indexing is faster than Squidoo.

  • There are much better ways to get backlinks and one in particular won't need you to spend hours creating lenses, but does work in a minute or so. pm me if you want details

  • Squdioo obviously..because hubpages are just way to crazy at times...

  • I've used both but I started out with Squidoo. In my opinion, like most here, it doesn't hurt to use both because backlinks are what count. Personally, I like the setup and interface of hubpages more. It's simple and to the point. This is all personal preference though, so just do what works best for you.
