Tweaking advice needed

Recently I just started a new philosophy with my internet marketing. It's a model I've seen talked about quite a bit here:

1) Squeeze page: captures an email address in exchange for a free report
2) After the email address is captured it redirects to a sales offer

Right now my squeeze page is converting right around 10% (the offer page not at all). While that's ok, I've read I could probably get it much higher. I'm at the point where I need to start tweaking/testing my pages. I've read a lot about that here however not a lot of specifics. For example:

1) How many visits does it take to find out if a change is effective or not? I've been using 100 as a measuring stick. Is that enough?

2) Exactly what should be tweaked? I'm not much of a copywriter, so I'm unsure exactly what parts of the copy should be changed. Until now I've added things like a few videos & a picture but in regards to the copy I'm unsure what to change.

3) Traffic sources: Right now I'm using 2 forms of traffic. Facebook ads & adCenter. I'm in the process of tweaking my campaigns to make the KWs more specific to my niche. Is there a way to track to see how traffic converts from each source? For example if I tweak FB & adCenter at the same time I won't know which tweak is working unless I do 1 at a time & that obviously takes longer.

4) When is enough? Is there a point where you just have to be resigned to the fact that this particular niche will never convert well enough to be profitable & move on to another niche? Or can all niches be profitable with enough tweaking? My main goal here is to build a list, however since I am paying for traffic I would like to use my back end offer to at least break even.

If anyone else can give some tweaking advice that would be great.

Tim
