What exactly does a Virtual Assistant do?

I mean what are his/her tasks and what are they good for? Just to answer emails? Please enlighten me.

    I am actually getting ready to make this move and it's going to be a brain strain to put together the description and training.

    For me, it will be doing all of the things that take me away from what I really "want" to do - which is broaden my business. I know that's very "broad". It's meant to be.

    However, I can't do any of that because I'm always dealing with hosting issues, server issues, managing my other outsourcers and generally keeping the things that I've already started moving along. That's what a VA will be to me.

    now to just write that down so that someone else can understand it and implement it :rolleyes:

    A Virtual Assistant should be able to do just about anything a personal assistant, secretary, receptionist, administrative assistant would do in a physical office setting, except he or she would perform all tasks via the Internet or telephone lines.

    Like trishworks4u mentioned, it's always good to have the tasks that you want someone to do spelled out plainly with a flowchart or instruction manual of some sort. You could even create videos or screen captures documenting the tasks you'd like to delegate to a virtual assistant. Perhaps once you hire someone and start training them, they can document the steps for you so you won't have to spend valuable time doing them yourself. But prepared to pay your VA for the training time as well.

    I have a team of few freelance Virtual Assistant's. We can do anything on the internet related to online marketing (web design, articles, SEO etc...)

    There are some misconceptions regarding Virtual Assistants because of the term 'Assistants'. In fact I guess the proper term should be 'Virtual Workers'. Some virtual assistants may offer 'personal assistant' like services but a lot of other virtual workers may do

    a. copywriting
    b. article writing
    c. link building
    d. social media optimization
    e. online reputation management
    f. web design
    g. wordpress installation/maintenance
    h. programming
    i. logo/illustrations
    j. ...and a lot more.

    Usually there are site that list their skill set in a nice tabular form like in Zirtual.com so if you check out a profile of a virtual worker, you can actually see what sort of skills they have, what they're expertise are, and their rates.

    The question of whether you can afford one, I guess you can start with the amount you can afford. Like if you can afford $100 a month, find somebody who can work say 5 hours a week for 4 weeks at that price.

    One of the key aspects about growing your business is to systemise & leverage other people's skills. That's where a VA can be of assistance, as they can fill the skill gaps, &/or perform the regular tasks for a relatively smaller cost, leaving you with time to develop your business & focus on the things that you are good at. It's all about doing the best you can with what you are best at, rather than trying to do everything on your own.

    VA helps us to reduce time. Basically they do repeating tasks like link building, article writing and designing. In the mean time, we must scale business plan, motivate with new methods and moral.
