Wordpress Blogger: Update Your Blog Version

Hey warrior bloggers,

I've just lost my affiliate marketing blog (2 years old). A big mistake. I didn't update my blog (it was version 2.1.2), and it suddenly disappeared... It's not a problem, the next one will be even better!

The bottom line: always upgrade your blog to the latest version.

Franck.

Older versions of WordPress have known vulnerabilities. Hacker script kiddies can search the internet for these older versions and own them.

Was it because of a hack? Coz I do not understand why you have lost your blog.

You're not alone, friend... this has happened to my primary blog three times...

To prevent this problem from happening again, I go to my WordPress Admin, click on Settings, and then click Export. This allows you to download everything you have posted so far (except for your plugins and themes)

I hope this information is helpful.

There's also database plugins that will email you a daily/weekly/monthly database backup and if you're script savvy, some automated scripts you can install.

Not upgrading will not lose your wordpress.org blog as it is an independent blog hosted by yourself. The script resided on your domain and is controlled by your mysql database.

Have you installed any new plugins as a bad plugin can cause havoc disabling the blog. Also a hack will do this aswel the version is irrelevant to the operation of the blog.

All your postings are in your mysql database so if you instal a new wp blog just use those settings for the new blog..

I agree on the update advice. (And that applies to more than just Wordpress, for those who might be using MT, Drupal, Joomla, etc.) Something I was neglecting to do until one of my blogs got hacked and got that dreaded "malware site" warning on google. It's fixed - and updated - now (along with others I'd neglected a bit).

But how did you lose it? Mine was a mess, but quite recoverable with a bit of work. Did they somehow manage to delete everything?

It's lost, disappeared, nada nothing... after two years of posting.

      Look at my host answers...

It appears that someone wiped your database (older versions of wordpress are known to have security holes and that's why you should always keep it up to date). The only solution would be to re-install the wordpress software.
I'm afraid that you've lost the blogs - I checked the backup drive but the copies have been overwritten with the blank dbs.

You can re-install the software through your hosting account's control panel. Use the "Fantastico" feature and you'll be able to install the latest version of wordpress on your account.
I just need to re-install a brand new (and better one) in the same subfolder...

My site had a first page for affiliate marketing... now on page 2, and I guess soon far from that...

      Have a look: http://mynetmarketingland.com/blog <---- nothing there...

Backup your site thru Cpanel every week or more, however I would recommend changing hosts, because a better host would have a remote backup of your site.

Even if you had to pay $30 for them to restore it, it is well worth it.

        Good luck!

        Yep your database is gone.
Like another Warrior mentioned always backup your database.
I prefer going into phpMYadmin and exporting the db as a text file.

Once 2.7 is released it is going to be much easier to update your wordpress installations. From what i hear it is suppose to be push button. Until then you should always back up your blogs. This is a good service that is free.

Install the WP-DBManager plugin (it should be in the plugins section of the Wordpress site). It will backup your database at whatever frequency you like, and can optionally email you a copy of that backup file. If you ever lose the site, just re-install the software and plugin, then upload the backed up database.

      Cheers,
      Jason

You send us FTP info. Immediately after every new version of Wordpress been released, we will upload and install the latest secure software to your blog. And you don't need to do anything.

We will update your blog to the latest version of Wordpress within hours after your order is confirmed. This is not a onetime upgrade, but a service with continuing updates.
For each update a professional webmaster will complete the upgrade to your blog. Your files will be backed up. Then, the new, secure files will be uploaded to your server Your personal webmaster for this task will then install the update, and check so be sure that everything is ok.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I have WP version 2.5.1. I see I have an upgrade link in my admin to 2.6.3 or something but have been reluctant to do so for fear of losing my content.

If I click on that link to upgrade it, will it automatically do it and I'll hardly even know - kinda like changing a theme would be in the admin?

    Thx

Unfortunately upgrading Wordpress is a manual process (although I believe they're changing that with version 2.7 - currently in beta - to make it an automatic process). The link will just take you to their site to download all the files again.

There is a plugin (Wordpress Automatic Upgrade) you can install that will do the update for you. I've used it without any problems on my sites, but a few people have had problems (of the database deleting kind), so it pays to manually backup your database yourself before using the plugin.

If you do decide to use it, I recommend you turn off every other plugin you have installed before you begin. It does do this for you at one point during the upgrade, but I ran into some minor problems the first time I tried to use it (it just gave an error and stopped). Once I turned off all my other plugins, everything worked fine.

      Cheers,
      Jason

    Hey Jason,

I just upgraded another of my blogs, but it wasn't manually. All I did was clicking on a button in my fantastico.

    Did I miss something here?

No, you did not. Upgrading from Fantastico is pretty painless. What the other posters were saying was that inside your WordPress admin panel, there is no automatic way of upgrading your WP installation.

As to your host's backups, they are very lame if they can't provide an older backup for you to restore. All is not lost, however. Go to the Internet Archive and retrieve your site's data. I forget the url, just search for it. Maybe a warrior can help here.

    Franck,

This will be a lesson for all of us, that we should always back up our data periodically. I made this mistake once on one of my blogs. I was trying to update my blog one day and deleted a folder accidentally from the host site. I tried to get it back but it was already gone from the host service. So I lost about three months worth of data and articles.

Secure your wordpress blog is the best thing you can do .. Yes you should always make backups. All of my sites are backed up every 24 hours.

Updating your blog will not help .. hackers are still hacking wordpress version 2.6.3
