Do many people buy their name as a domain name?

I have been seeing this more and more, do many people buy their own names as a domain name? What is the purpose?

I did it, as a way to promote ME. But its not really needed per say, you can become a recognized name through your site just as easy.

If you want to get your name out there, it is a good idea to have it in your domain name. I have been a freelance writer for three years, and word of mouth advertising is a good way to gain new clients. Having my name as a domain is easy to remember so that happy clients can easily pass my information along to their colleagues looking for original content.

I already bought mine but I will only use it until I have built some authority or got myself to some level of expertise. Otherwise people will be like who is Katya Senina anyway? :p

    I did! I did!

It's my professional non-IM resume... which is slightly outdated since I haven't done anything except sit around in my sweats for the past few years.

If you can do it...do it.

You can always monitize it later, but once it's taken it may take you years to get the chance again if ever.

Someone, who I assume is a musician, already bought my name.

I don't really think it's that big of a deal unless you're in a niche that requires a face to go with the name. Your face is your logo at that point.

As an add on to my original comment, I think its more professional if you have an email like clint@clintbutler.com versus a hotmail or gmail account when dealing with clients.

I bought Sal'sSecretsRevealed.com simply because it was generic enough to let me branch to wherever I wanted to go -- and it's my name.......
But the important factor in buying it was that the ones I REALLY wanted were already taken. heavy sigh.

I would not buy one with my full name unless I had it changed because Sally Taylor is James Taylor's daughter's name, so anyone seeing the name would assume that is who owns the website.

Did you try making the owner an offer?

A couple years ago I did that and got my first/last .com but it was not cheap as I had to pay mid-4 figures.

Since it's a common name (like your name is too) I believe I could resell it for what I paid for it (or even more) if I ever wanted to.

Yup. Like everyone has said, to promote yourself. If you want to be known for whatever reason(by your real name), then it is a smart move!

A lot of people do especially people who want to brand their name. This is common for freelance writers, artists and some internet marketers.

I did, if nothing else, I can prevent somebody else to buy it ... and then some day when I will decide I want it, I'll have to pay big cash for it.

I have mine, although I haven't really done anything much with it yet. I'm still deciding what to do with it.

At least a name like mine isn't too popular so it was still available

One reason to buy your own name is to keep it from falling into the wrong hands.

I got a mailing about a politician during last year's elections. It was an attack piece and the domain name they were sending people to was the politician's name (e.g., JaneSmith.com).

You should own your own name, if at all possible. I own CathyStucker.com and KathyStucker.com.

This only really applies when you are building a site around a product or service that you are targeting for SEO.

Buying your own name as a domain, as everyone has said already, is about branding "You" Inc.

What you do with that branding is up to you - it may be your niche authority site, your professional services homepage, or something more personal to give your prospects a window into your personal life.

I wouldn't worry about optimizing your personal site if it is for the last reason; other than for your name...

Personally, I use my personal site as my IM authority blog.

If your name is already taken, put a "-" in, or add a middle initial...

I would buy mine just for the fact I would rather give out my email address and have it be my name.

    Example Mike@mikeredd.com

I have mine but it has been sitting with an empty blog on it for a couple of years. I really don't know what to do with it as I already have an IM blog that is nearly four years old.

Maybe a personal blog but I don't think that people would be that interested in reading about my life.

It was the 2nd domain I bought. Would advise it if your serious about marketing.
If your name is already taken you can always try it like this
your-name.com or something else to break it apart

I owned my name .com for years. At first, I had it sitting around doing nothing for two years, then I put a personal blog on it that I blocked from the search engines and only gave the URL to family and friends. It was before I was on Facebook, so it was a way for the people I know personally to keep up with me and what I was doing. I had that blog for six years, and posted to it nearly every day for that whole time.

Then, earlier this year, my husband (who is a musician), attracted two stalkers from his MySpace band page...a lady in her early 60s and a girl just out of college in her early 20s. Since he talked about me a bit on his page and had some pictures of me there (as well as having me listed as a backup singer on the song credits for one of his songs), it didn't take too long for the crazy stalkers to find my exact name domain name blog online and start harrassing me there. They also found my husband's phone number online and started calling him incessantly. He ended up having to get his phone number changed, and I had to take down the blog. It's all backed up on disc for printing out later for my future kids.

Let that be a cautionary tale of using your real, actual name as a domain name!

Well i am thinking of buying my name's domain for 3 years but couldn't buy because I still can't decide what to do with it. However i think it's time to buy as i have started making little money online. It may feel good to have my own name as domain.

Got mine a couple years back, never actually got to do anything with it, but it's next on my list of projects now that I'm getting back in the coaching business.

I already have 5 different domains which will all be pointing to the blog, but a personal domain never hurts.

another thing is if you're an internet marketer guru, it doesn't hurt to get your own domain name as your name. people will definitely visit your domain and buy some products.

I’m in network marketing so its sort of a must to stand out from the crowd.
I do other things as well and having my own name as part of my domain is a huge plus.
