So is this a good open rate?

I was checking to see how my messages after #1 were doing and out of 82 people 22 had opened messaged #2. At 26.8% should I be satisfied with this open rate?

It might be. The problem is that your sample size (your list) is too small. You really need at least several hundred subscribers to draw any meaningful conclusions about open rates. Obviously, you want as high a rate as possible, but in this day and age it's tougher than ever. People are inundated with emails and lots of people sign up to dozens of lists. You're fighting an uphill battle.

Given that, your best weapon is to really 'WOW!' your subscribers with awesome content. What will happen is you'll get an open rate that slowly creeps up. That's because your great content will make loyal openers out of the ones who do open the early ones, while you'll always snag new openers out of the ones who just happen to open one of your emails later on. I hope that makes sense.

Let's say that of those 22 out of 82 who opened #2, they were impressed by what you sent. Safe to assume they'll be looking for your next email, right? They're your loyal openers. In #3, chances are a few who were not in the initial 22 will open. So now you've got 22 + how many ever opened #3 - as long as you wow them!

Over time, you creep that open rate up. The other good thing is that by constantly sending great content in your emails, you also increase the chances of turning email readers into customers when you send them something to buy.

What sort of spacing do you find to be effective? I have emails sent out every day for 7 days after sign up because I want to become familiar to buying prospects quickly but maybe I'm giving people too much too quick?

This is a good question. I also have a 7-day series, and I don't send a message every day. I send one message every two or even three days. I think the whole 7-day series takes 20 days to cycle through.

Not saying my way is better, because sometimes I DO get emails from people wanting the next lesson right away. And in that case, I send them a link to a page that has ALL seven lessons on it so that they can read it.

I haven't tested it, so I'd be interested in hearing what others report on this.

By the way, my open rate is between 15% and 28%.

It depends on your niche, probably, but I have found through a lot of testing with my lists that sending emails 2-3 days apart is the sweet spot. I get more opens and better conversions at that interval. But you'll find other marketers who swear by daily emails, and others who say even a 3-day interval is too soon. You have to test. Play around with it. Don't just stick with 1-day intervals. Mix in some 2, 3, even go a full week. Remember that you can always send broadcasts to the entire list, too.

What I like to do is set the follow-up interval to 3 days and then mix in some broadcasts once or at most twice a week. That's proven to be the best combination... but again, that's for MY lists. You'll find your own sweet spot - but only if you test it.
