Is Google Editions a ClickBank killer?

Something in the Engadget post today caught my eye:

Google Editions launching in US before the end of the year, going international in Q1 2011 -- Engadget

"Small websites of all creeds, whether they be independent bookstores or book reviewers, will be encouraged to participate by linking their users to Google Editions of whatever scriptures they're discussing -- with an unannounced revenue sharing model keeping them interested."

What if Google offered a deal similar to that of ClickBank, giving the publisher and affiliate large chunks of the e-book sale and took a smaller cut as the service provider? Would Google's brand recognition with, presumably, a solid DRM scheme built in -- a big concern for infopublishers -- make the switch worth it?

I doubt it. Google absolutely hates many of the products sold on ClickBank. I think the last thing Google wants is a migration of bogus how to make money eBooks.

I agree, not to mention the fact that Google launches new services all the time and very few of them ever develop into anything other than a tax write-off for them. Google has a few huge successes and piles of failures in their wake.

In either case, though, I don't think Clickbank has much left for it - it's already been falling apart at the seams for quite a while. Whether it be Google or another business, I imagine a new, good affiliate marketplace is due to be the next big thing sometime soon.
