Hi, i submitted an article last night to a couple directories and its already top of page 2 in google. My question is will it increase any more by itself or will i have do that?

It could increase (although there's no guarantee).

I often find that articles I submit to Ezinearticles start out on page 2, and as long as they're well optimized they often end up on page 1 after about a week or so.

I'd wait a while to see what happens (maybe submit some more articles in the meantime), and after a few weeks you can then decide whether or not it's worth promoting the article.

If no one competes with you over that keyterm then it will stay there. If you are too paranoid about it, you can always build backlink to reinforce your article serp ranking

What I do after getting my article published. I make few links here and there and it really to get a better ranking. It don't take much time to make links because I make a list of sites where I could build quick links and which are relevant.

On its own, it could, provided people will link to it from their sites or from any site they regularly hang out in. You can also monitor CTRs of your article/s while building more articles and building links for your websites. If you see it has good CTRs and you also get more sales or sign ups or affiliate link clicks or CPC clicks (whatever moneytization methods are in your website), then it would most likely be worth your while to build a few links to those articles, though most likely better to provide 80% importance on building links for your website. High CTRs do not necessarily mean improved sales/sign ups/ad clicks/etc., by the way.

If no one will try to rank for the same keyword then it will stay up there, but if I were you I would get few backlinks a day to your articles just to be safe.

Some article directories will distribute your article for others to post on their blog/site. So, if this is the case, doing nothing can help your ranks if you wrote good content and people feature the article on their blog/site. Also, as many of the above posters mentioned, it depends much on the keyword you're ranking for. If it's competitive, don't count on a stable rank without more link building; if it's a long tail keyword with little competition and traffic then it'll probably be fairly stable (but I don't know why you'd want to rank for an infrequently searched keyword anyway).

    Hope that helps.

Really? Which ones are you thinking of? You're talking about directories, here? Not commercial article distribution services?

I believe he's referring to people syndicating the author's articles on their websites, though I'm not sure if article directories "distribute" published articles to their syndication member list for possible syndication.
