What does OP stand for?

I keep reading in many threads that "The OP said this" or "Thats what the OP meant" or something similar.

I've deduced that OP refers to the person who started the thread, but still have no clue what OP is supposed to represent - Is it OPerator or what...

Please enlighten me.

      Talltom, that would be "The OPP" rather than "OP." And be very careful using "OPP" because in rap songs, it means something ENTIRELY different...
