How Should I Contact A Website Owner That I'm Interested In Purchasing His Site?

In what manner should I approach a website owner that I am interested in purchasing his website?

Do not wish to sound that desperate, so that I am able to purchase his site at a "no-hyped" fair price.

I think it depends on if the website owner is saavy in the ways of selling sites or not and also how much the site is making him/her.

If the person is not that knowledgeable, it might be good to make your offer first. A lot of people not in the IM niche (and probably some who are) have no idea that people even buy websites and would have no idea how to value theirs. Chances are they would undervalue it. Or, maybe they might think you were a scammer.

If it seems like the persons knows about website selling and the site is profitable for them, them you might want to let them know you are interested and ask for their selling price should they want to sell. Possibly you will luck out and get a good price but if it is too high you can always negotiate.

If those people ain't in the IM niche, how can we appear credible to them?

Our email might be consider spam to them, just like how I was when I was a newbie.

I just emailed a guy about the site I was interested in with an offer for a set price. Turns out that price was fine with him and it was done. If you are trying to get it for peanuts, it may be more difficult. My offer was reasonable for the site and he was glad to take the money and unload it. I resold it for twice as much, so it was a good investment.

Personal I always like when they offer a price up front instead of asking how much I want for it. This way if I like the price I'll take it, if not I'll pass. I usually pass on the ones that ask me for a price.

I haven't had it happen that often, but when people have emailed me about purchasing a site, they seem to always say "would you be interested in selling your site and if so, how much do you want for it." I always respond that everything is for sale and ask them to make an offer. I've yet to hear back from one.

My point being, if you don't make an offer to begin with, you will probably be lumped in among the people who are just trying to take advantage of the owner. Make a low, but not insulting offer, and it will give you room to negotiate.

Contact them by email, obviously phone would be better. Start out with a price that you think is fair. Don't ask them to set the price - that's lame. Be confident in your offer.

Don't come out and say it but through the way you word your conversation, make it implied that it's not the end of the world if they accept or not.

It's funny. As soon as people know someone else wants what they have, they tend to want it more as well.
