Still can't find a niche?

Am I over thinking this? I know niches are important...

No. You're looking in the wrong places, Tom.

Go down to your local big newsagent's and have a look through this month's magazines. See the titles of all the articles, and the range of subjects covered (perhaps ignoring "special Christmas stuff"). Every single one is a niche. Stop looking at "Market Samurai" and "Ezine" and what other marketers are doing, and think about what paying customers are spending their money on.

Try going to Dummies(dot)com - this is the site for the company that produces all the "For Dummies" books. If they go to the trouble of producing a physical product and making tens of thousands of them - there must be a need right? Peruse the titles and I'm sure you'll find a niche in there.

You are over thinking this...it's actually quite easy to find niches. Just go to Google and check out Google Trends...see what people are searching for. Then you can check the keyword stats for those searches to see how competitive the niche is.

Really it depends on what you can afford to lose.

Are you tight on money or do you have money to drop?

If you can spend some money on a domain and some backlinking then I'd say just pick a few, work on them and see if they work, your bound to find a winner right?

That's what a lot have done anyway, its the trial and error process.

If you can't, use the free services available to you, such as blooger, hubpages, squidoo etc.....

If the main keywords you are looking to rank for take longer to rank for than you would want to run a test period for. Use some longer tail keywords with your primary keywords or heavily related keywords with low to medium search volume in order to see if the niche is viable.

Some people do their testing by dropping a $100 dollars in ppc, others do a few eZines and so on...

Choose which ever one sounds best to you.

EVERYTHING is a Niche (well.... almost)

What are you typing on? A computer. A computer has programs, software, hardware, accessories. There are computer mouses(mice?), laptops, desktops, mouse pads, screen cleaners, printers, fax machines, speakers, etc.

Is your computer at a desk? Is there a lamp? You could talk about lamps, pens, pencils, paper, office supplies, office chairs, etc.

What are you using to type? Your hands. Your hands could use WINTER GLOVES. There are winter hats, gloves, shoes, boots, earmuffs, scarves, etc. You hands could also use baseball gloves, football gloves, cleaning gloves, rings, jewelery, etc.

What are you wearing? A shirt (hopefully). There are funny shirts, cool shirts, shirts for women, shirts for men, t shirts, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, hoodies, ruffled shirts, etc.

Do you have a pet? Maybe you have a dog. What does a dog need? food, training, barking lessons. There are also different breeds, sizes, genders, color, age spans, etc.

Do you have a special lady in your life? Do you need relationship advice? Information on breaking up, cheating, staying together forever, getting an ex back, getting back at an ex, having a threesome :p, tell your parents/friends/coworkers you are gay, etc.

My advice?
PICK SOMETHING THAT YOU ENJOY DOING.

Personally, I enjoy playing basketball. And yes, I do have a niche site about basketball.

Do you like weaving?
Gardening?
Shooting pool?
Playing darts?
Overcoming boredness?
Finding funny sites online?
Sleeping?
Doing nothing?
Running?
Eating?

First try a niche (any niche), even if you don't care much about it, and use a pen name with your promotions. If it doesn't work out for you, it won't be personal and you can move on to the next one.

Just pick a niche. Find something that you and interested in or knowledgeable about and get to work. You are thinking too much. You will never find the "perfect" niche

True but it seems everything I enjoy is either not a good niche idea (badminton) Or too competitive like you said on the other thread: Poker, MMO niche.

Well, are you planning to launch physical product sites or digital product affiliate sites?

If you are looking for physical product niches, there are millions of them. Do you have a tool box at home? Great, look for sub niches of those. I have digital calipers in my tool chest, and I found a gazillion high search volume keywords involving digital calipers and digital micrometers (incl. long tail keywords) som of them are pretty expensive, and people are looking for specific brand names of high end digital calipers (thousands of searches per month, some of them are rankable with very low competition)

I can launch a bunch of amazon mini sites promoting those and some review sites preselling my amazon offers.

Look around the house, look at tools, toys, etc and go for small, obscure or very specific things (avoid broad, mainstream stuff).

For example people are searching for certain brands of underwater hd camcorders (I saw thousands of search vol for one of the exact phrase variations and it was in amazon best sellers list) there is no question they are mostly buying (especially in holiday season). Most people search for such specific stuff when they have already decided to buy and researching reviews, prices etc.

To me it sounds like you're overthinking this. Just pick a niche, test it out for a few weeks. If you see it's starting to make some progress, run with it. If you see it not making any progress then ditch it and buy another domain and start over. Like someone else said, it's all trial and error. Your one site is not going to be your one and only site.

The big list of stuff you posted isn't really a list of niches... it's a list of areas you've tried to market in.

If you're continually spinning, and continually posting the same question (according to Kay King above) then you're not taking the info to heart.

STOP.

Take a deep breath and think about what you are interested in.

Then think about the problems in that area.

Think about solutions to those problems, starting with the ones that need to be solved the most critically.

Research (a little bit) solutions to those problems.

You have the general form for a product.

Research it to see if there truly are people that will buy before you get too in depth in research or start making the product, but you've got a problem and a solution. That's the basis of every good product out there, at least at the ground level.

Stop surfing the forums looking for ideas of what other people think are YOUR niche. Do that AFTER you've gotten off the ground.

If you're swimming in circles, pause and think about what you like to do... it'll come to you when you do. ;-)

Go to click bank, search under market under each and every topic until you find one that interests you and that many others are selling. That way you know it must be doing good if a lot of other people are promoting it. There are soooo many different info products there.

You want a niche yet want it to be popular and needed?

Well this is your answer. You want something which is new but something that nobody has but wants. You can take something which you feel is over used but popular and make it your niche as long as you have a angle on it no one has.

You take what you feel is popular and add you niche angle on it. That will get you there and I know it works as I have and still use this method

I use amazon.com for ideas (in their most sold category) also sites like New Year's Resolutions on 43 Things show what people are currently interested in..

Tom when you are overthinking it, you just don't get anywhere. Take a break, clear your head and stop thinking about it altogether.

Last week I was looking for a new niche and just couldn't find anything at all. I went away and forgot about it and a couple of days later I came back and I was on Hubpages - not looking for a niche, just working on a new hub. Then I noticed the 'answers' section link and I clicked on it and as I was looking through some of the questions I saw a couple of questions and immediately thought 'hey that would be a good niche for the site I want to do'! Went and did the keyword research and it turned out to be a really good niche. I actually found a couple of different niches that day.

So when I was overthinking, I just couldn't think straight. When my head was clear, niches were jumping out at me!

KISS is always the best way!

There are lots of buying customers in craft and hobby niches like remote controlled airplanes, cricut machines, edible ink printers, scrapbooking etc.

Amazon best sellers is a good indicator, you can pick the high ticket items from the sub-categories and build mini sites around those.

If you have that much trouble, just buy micro niche finder and let it find niches for you.
