The truth about Internet marketing & the personal characteristics needed to succeed

I've been on the Warrior Forum for well over a year now, and I have learnt an awful lot in that time. Thanks to a lot of the advice I have received, I can say my business has steadily grown over that time.

I wanted to pass on some of my awareness as a thank you to all those Warriors who have helped me in the past by outlining what I see as being important when you are new and considering starting out in Internet marketing.

Hopefully you will identify with the character traits, that I believe are necessary to become successful as an Internet marketer.

Many people have a rosy colored view of making money on the internet. They perceive that it is easy, and that they only need to spend a week, or two working solidly, and they will start making some good money. They are pounded with awesome well written and convincing sales copy that tells them about the six and seven figure incomes that are being generated in very short time scales, and they get sucked into believing that these are true, and usually part with their limited startup funds, only to find that they never quite got all the information they needed.

Unfortunately, I hate to break it to you, but most of these claims simply aren't true. Sure, the possibility to earn these sorts of incomes is a real reality, and there are thousands of fulltime Internet Marketing experts that make six and seven figure incomes, but in 99% of cases, it hasn't been overnight, and it has taken some solid hard work over a good period of time.

So, lose the rose colored glasses, and face up to the fact, that you won't make your fortune overnight, (or in the next month) but put the effort in, learn to stay focussed, and committed to your cause, and within 6 months, to a year, you could or should be earning enough to quit your day job. (depending on what that is of course) Maintain the same focus, and attention to detail, and keep building your business for another twelve months, and by the end of the second year, you should now have a monthly income that will be the envy of your friends. The ability to scale your business from this point is then up to you.

No matter what it is you decide to do, the fact remains that in order to make an income from the internet, there needs to be goods, products, or services sold. There is no getting around this, all business revolves around the sale of goods and services, so if you're the type of person who says "I can't sell" or "I don't like selling", then get over it. If you want to be in business for yourself, you will be selling something in one form or another to someone else. A lot of the sales techniques and practices for your internet marketing business can be anonymous, and automated, however don't ever lose sight of the fact that you will have 'people' who buy your products, or services, and these people will be your customers. And like all customers, they like to be treated well, and given value for money when they choose to spend it.

Finally, another thing about making money in an internet business, is that it will require work (a lot of work), and despite what all the guru's try and tell you, there is no 'magic button'. Please understand this now, as it will probably help stop you constantly looking for the next best opportunity. To be successful as an Internet Marketer, you need to have certain personal traits, otherwise you may fall into the 95% that decide to quit, and give it away.

To be Successful, as an Internet Marketer, in my opinion, you need to have:

• Determination
This is tied to your goals. Have a BEHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) These are the sorts of goals that you think you could achieve only in your wildest dreams. No one can give you determination; it has to come from your belly, and your heart. It should be unshakeable, and it will be what drives you on days when you feel like you've had enough

• A Willingness to Learn
You will be learning a vast amount in your Internet Marketing business. Be prepared to soak everything up like a sponge. Share with others, and don't be afraid to ask questions of those that know more than you. They will usually always be willing to help.

Don't shy away from learning the technical stuff, as this will help you in the long run. Learn to build a website, learn to build a list, learn backlinking, learn to write effective articles, and sales copy, Learn how to integrate a web form into your squeeze page, etc. The list goes on and on. Be warned, that all this learning can be overwhelming, so decide on a specific topic you want to learn, and learn all you can on that specific topic until you are comfortable you know all you need to know about it, then move on to another topic to learn and do the same with that one.
Many of the tedious tasks that you need to learn about can actually be outsourced once you get more established, or you could even take on an assistant to fulfil many of these tasks for you.

• Dedicated Focus
One of the biggest problems faced by people starting in Internet marketing, and particularly in their first 12 -18 months of getting started, is that they don't have a direction, or a focus. This usually comes from not having created a business plan to begin with. The consequence of this lack of focus, is that these people never complete the tasks they start. They have the greatest of intentions at the beginning, but because some other shiny, "better opportunity" comes along, they end up constantly going from one thing to another. The successful Internet marketer, however sets up a business plan in the first place, and then 'like a racehorse with blinkers' focuses solely on the task required as per their business plan. This means that action is always happening, things get done, and progress is made.

• A Solid Self Esteem, and belief in yourself
In Internet marketing, there will be many instances where you will wonder whether or not you're on the right path, or whether you have what it takes. It's quite natural to have self-doubt at times, but you need to have enough self-confidence, and belief in yourself that you can leap over these doubtful times, and resume where you left off.

Again the importance of having a business plan can't be overemphasised enough. This will provide you with the roadmap for you to follow, when the road gets rocky, things start to fall apart, and you get challenge after challenge. At times like this, you need to be able dig out all the stops. In fact it's times like this when the support of another colleague, or fellow Warrior can be of immense help.

One of the issues I see with people is when they hear people can make money online and immediately think to themselves, hey i can do that...i can put up a website about my hobby and millions will buy from it. I've begun to tell ppl what it really takes to become an online marketer. Not the rosy glasses view but the full-time-for-over-a-year-hard-work-just-to-make-a-dollar-even-though-u-have-the-individual-skills-to-be-earning-over-$100K-at-a-job-completely-irrational-determination. This aint no hobby mister or sister! And I scare the hell out of them. If they cant get pass that, they are not going to make it anyway and should just use the time to watch tv dreaming.

Yeah.. it needs a lot of patience and focus too... Everytime I come here, I listen to so many things and sometimes I get confused what should I really follow. So I try to master one thing at a time and when I feel I am doing it right, I start learning a new method along with it. Nice post!

Good to hear. That is exactly what i recommend, learning one thing at a time, and learning it well before you move onto learning the next thing

Warren, great summary of what is needed to truly succeed at internet marketing! I believe that there are really no "overnight" IM success stories like the slick sales page copywriters would have you believe, and behind every "overnight" success story lies a tale of hard work, failures and countless hours of just trying to figure things out.

I definitely agree with you. Self belief is important to drive a people to work. As long as they believe in themselves, they'll definitely succeed on everything that they do and be more mature in the process.
