Self promotion in ten minutes a day

Here's how I promote myself on social media - mostly Twitter and Linkedin. I write a blog post in my area of expertise - in my case, writing SEO press releases. I post in on my blog. I shrink the link via bit.ly because bit.ly also lets me track how many people click on the link.

Then, I tweet links to the blog post and also post a link on Facebook - I use ping.fm, which can simultaneously update all of your social networking sites at the same time.

I say something like "Here's a link to my latest blog post - how to write an SEO press release - retweet if you find it useful!"

I generally get anywhere from several dozen visitors to several hundred visitors from each tweet/Linkedin post. These are very targeted visitors -they chose to click on that link or post. Some of these visitors turn into customers!

And it's as simple as that, folks. If you are writing about an area where you truly are an expert and you have good info to share - whether it be SEO or organic gardening - it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to write that post.

Oh, another tip - I link to popular old posts of mine ALL THE TIME. Nobody complains "Oh, I read that before!" because they probably missed it the first time. Only a tiny percentage of my Twitter followers/Linkedin connections are going to see each link that I tweet. Using old posts saves me time, and it helps spread good, truly useful information.

      Hi Daniel,

Can you PM me that information as well. I am busy trying to decide what kinds of website promotion I want to focus on for 2011.

That is a GREAT tip. THANKS.

I stay away from Social media (twitter) because I find it so time consuming, but I like this idea to just post a short message and link back to your blog post! The tip to tweet OLD posts is even better! Really Good idea. I am going to try this strategy and get into Social media a bit more.

Sweet! I seriously wish I could write scripts. You might want to consider marketing that script somehow or using it as a free gift to build a list.

You can have a copy if you want just send me a PM and I'll give you a link

          Cheers Rob
Thanks! - does it work on a Mac?

I'm glad y'all find this helpful. It's the most effective way to use social networking sites in my opinion.

When you just tweet links to affiliate products - people are less likely to click. People don't like to be overtly "sold to".

But when you send out links to blog posts that show you are the expert at what you do - you are subtly selling to people and promoting yourself, while helping people at the same time.

Another plus - people tend to retweet useful links. So if you write a good blog post - people will retweet links to their followers. Free advertising! It's a win-win for everyone.

One question I sometimes get asked - If I give away all my best information for free, why will people need to hire me? They'll know how to do it (whatever IT is) themselves!

I can tell you from experience - people still hire me to write their press releases. They read my blog posts, see that I know what I am talking about, and say "Gee, I sort of see what you mean, but that looks hard. Can you do it for me?"

This is great advice for people who are still trying to figure out Twitter, Dana. Not only does it set yourself apart from many of the other marketers who are just using automated software to send out mindless tweets and affiliate links, by doing this you also establish yourself as an authority figure in your field. Sure, it requires work, but after a while you'll have built up such a huge body of posts on your blog that your credibility and authority will be absolutely unassailable!

For the affiliate marketer, the best thing you can do is redirect your followers from Twitter to your meaningful and helpful posts on your blog, where it'll be so much easier to build a relationship and communicate with them. You'll see much better results this way in comparison to blasting out affiliate links every day, I guarantee it.
