Could submitting the same article or press release to different places help ranking?

I'm new to IM, please forgive me in case this question has been asked too many times. I just hope I can make a better estimation before putting a lot of time into it.

My question is, would all those backlinks built take into account by search engine? There are suggestions to submit the same article or press release to multiple directories, for building more backlinks. I know duplicating the same piece of article do no harm, search engine just neglect others and will choose one to show in SERP. But what about the backlinks? I just wonder if search engine will do similar thing, just neglect all the backlinks in the duplicated articles or press release, and only count one of them.

Would that be the case? Can some one tell from his/her experience?

    You will probably get a variety of opinions on this. A good middle of the road plan is to submit to one high ranked page (ezinearticles), wait a week then submit to others.

      Yes I use ezine and then Article Post Robot for lots of quality submissions

    I submit the same article to the top 10 to 15 directories and various other locations (described in my course below in my sig). What I'm looking for is my articles to become published by website and blog owners. This can get you a flood of traffic and some really good back links.

    But I want to know other than traffic gain, would those duplicated articles / press release create new backlink (from search engine point of view) too? I just think search engine may neglect them as they are duplicated.

    I don't think my articles will create much traffic for me, but I want to have more backlinks for SERP ranking. If duplicated articles don't count as backlink, I will not put effort into it.

    Any articles that are duplicate content will essentially end up in Googles supplemental index.. if they themselves do not have relvent links pointing to them. Any back links you have on those articles will not count, so from an SEO point of view... you will have wasted your time and efforts.

    I will choose not to put effort to submit the same article to multiple directories then, as it cannot build backlinks for me which is what I want.

    There are three main directories ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com and articlecity.com... These are the directories on which I submit my articles and it help me to get visitors...
