Cartoon Pictures on Social Networking Sites

I was talking with someone about how there are cartoons representing people on their social networking websites. I believe the idea is to upload a cartoon character that has similar traits as you, or also possibly your favorite cartoon as a child.

Is this a new social networking fad?
Is this a new way of generating traffic?
Or is this just something for the month of December?

I'd like to hear what others think about this. Or if anybody is using this for themselves and why.

I have no I dea whether it is any of the above, but I have seen quite a few people offering to turn your photograph into a cartoon on fiverr.

No, people have been doing this for years. I would say it is mainly those who don't want to show their real face because of privacy - so a cartoon is the next best thing.

I hardly think this would be a traffic generating tactic and not sure how you think it ever could be?

Yes some people do it because they think they look cool as a cartoon...

but others do not want to show their real face. I do not really think it makes much of a difference.

It has been around for a while. I have a family member that does it because they think putting their real pic up will somehow allow someone to still their identity. I told them then I am screwed, and a bunch of people are walking around as me.

I've seen lots of spam users take this method. Similar to putting a hot girl as your profile picture.

I think that FaceBook or maybe a collection of people are sponsoring a movement to change your profile picture to the cartoon character you liked as a child to show your solidarity for a movement against childhood violence. At least that's what I recall.

Could be right. Lots of my facebook friends have various cartoon characters as their profile pic, like Tom and Jerry for instance.

That is the idea, though I don't see how changing your profile to a cartoon helps protect any children in any way...kinda like putting a ribbon on your car... A gesture, but doesn't accomplish anything. Since my user name is frequently OliveOyl, this would be easy to do.

It's for the violence against children. The goal was to not see anyones face til Monday or something like that.

The other answers are just completely wrong.. it won't last.

Yes it's for a campaign for violence against children. I still have The Simpsons in my Facebook profile

Personally I think changing your Facebook profile photo does nothing.... ok, it might help raise awareness but these people need to find an organization and just donate or adopt something. People are only doing this because their friends are and its rather annoying. Go adopt a kid or donate somewhere. Enough of this nonsense.

This is what got me loling.

      Raising 'Awareness'

I didn't realise Internet Access was available in caves, who wasn't aware of child abuse before?

I think it's a new social networking fad, and actually, I'm one of those who are using cartoon characters for profiles.

I just found out that many of my friends have changed their primary pictures into something unique and exciting, so I changed mine also. Of course, I have chosen the character also that shows my personality, and I found it's fun.

I'm in a social networking site, so I thought of going parallel with the trend, but of course, clinging on still to my choice of style.

Word on the street fellow Warriors. The group asking everyone to change their profile picture to their favorite cartoon is actually a group of pedophiles. They're doing it because kids will accept their friend request if they see a cartoon. It has nothing to do with supporting child violence. I just saw it on the news...

      Really?

Sorry, but that sounds like an urban myth to me.

People aren't going to suddenly be approaching kids just because they changed their profile pics. Pedophiles that use that technique have been doing it already, and will continue to do so long after we all change our profile pics to something else. In other words, there isn't any logic behind that news story. ('Story' seems even more fitting in this case)

So, yeah, sounds like either an urban myth, soppy reporting, or both.

      All the best,

There is no logic behind people changing their profile pictures to cartoons. Who started it? Where can we donate? How is it helping the problem of violence against children?

If it is a legitimate cause then it has not been carried out very well at all.

That was a hoax. And it doesn't make sense anyway. Pedophiles can put up cartoon characters now, without asking everyone else to do it.

I changed mine from Rowdy Roddy Piper to a CareBear here on Warrior Forum because it has been suggested that my matter-of-fact style makes a small number of candya$$es cry real tears.

Err.... I mean... my demeanor is unsettling with those who are incapable of rational thought...

err... I mean, I am trying to be a kinder, gentler person who doesn't ruffle anyone's tender feathers...

err... well you get the point...

I liked the preRRP avatar you had. I thought it made it easier to read your posts because of the nature of things you discuss. I also appreciate the bluntness.

But I used to get in a lot of bar fights and I never seemed to mind those situations too much. Thank goodness the 1970's and 80's aren't still with us.

I vote you change it back...

I just changed mine the other day.

My youngest mentioned that she did it, and why. So, I changed it to show her I support the cause. Now, I understand it won't really do anything, and that we need to take "real" action for change to happen. However, for somebody of a young age, changing an avatar IS doing something.

That being said, it took me a while to figure out which cartoon to put up. I'm a huge fan of the Simpsons, but that would have been the easy way out.

Instead, I went with a picture of Scooter and Bill from The Terrible Thunder Lizards! Which was one of the best cartoons ever. It was cool, because once I found the image, I paid a visit to YouTube and started watching clips of the show that I had forgotten about for many years.

    All the best,
    Michael

I think its a great idea in helping others but i don't see any donation button or link to a charity on FB. Well it's over now but hopefully another good cause pop up again. I even changed my profile to the new one ... not that good as the old I think but looking for more updates later.

I changed my facebook profile picture a couple of times this past weekend. First it was scooby doo (my favorite as a kid), then Johnny Bravo, and finally Dr. Doofenshmirtz (more like the real me) from Phineas & Ferb. It was interesting to see what my friends chose. My wife chose Wonder Woman. No real shock there.

The reason why people uploads pictures of cartoon characters to their social network profile this past few weeks is for them to support the fight violence against children. BUT it has been long in existence since mid-August. The root of this is still unknown. One thing is for sure. Changing profile pictures in social network won't help fight violence against children. This peculiar campaign has been started out by an unknown individual for no further reason but to make fun of others.

I got an idea from you that it's one way of fighting violence against children. But I wonder how could the profile cartoon pictures help in fighting violence? Is there any day for children or somewhat like celebration for children lately? Any thoughts from the warriors.
