WikiLeaks: Another Example of Being Careful with Your PayPal Purchases

The foundation providing donation money to WikiLeaks was just cut off from its PayPal account for being associated with a company that promotes illegal conduct.

The story here is not WikiLeaks (ie, don't get this thread off track politically).

This is yet another example of needing to be more careful with your PayPal purchases than with credit cards.

PayPal/eBay has, and will, track down anyone who has ever bought a product they do not like and cancel their account.

For example, if you have ever been terminated from the eBay affiliate program for being "associated" with a prior banned account, and you have no idea what happened or what they are talking about - this is it.

You purchased something, such as cookie stuffing software using PayPal, and from that purchase eBay tracked you down and terminated you.

I'm not saying eBay/PayPal will necessarily cancel your account(s) if you ever used PayPal to donate to WikiLeaks. But ... you should be concerned.

Bottom line: you need to be careful about what use your PayPal account for.

Really? I did not know this. Thanks for the information. I thought all paypal cared about was getting paid their fee. I use my paypal account to make IM-related purchases and payments, but it good to know that what you buy using your paypal account could potentially have negative consequences.

Everybody is going after Wikileaks these days. I agree about Paypal never keep all your eggs in one basket. They do not want to be frowned upon by the rest of the World by sponsoring, or being involved with anything wiki leaks. Or illegal in their eyes.

I think that is why they do what they do. It doesn't look good for business being associated with Wiki leaks like it or not!

Except for the people that should be. Those people might include a black ops team armed with sniper rifles.

My only problem with this, if wikilinks had a paypal donation button. That is on paypal, not the individuals who donated.

It would be within paypals rights to terminate wikilinks paypal account but to retroactively ban other paypal users who donated just feels like over-reacting to me.

I'm not a fan of wikileaks but if you donate to them through Paypal then paypal shouldn't come after you. Paypal should cancel themselves

    Thinking like PayPal management....

    Hmmm....

Would I rather have a few Internet marketing types pissed off at me or would I rather be dragged before multiple Congressional committees, investigated by every 3 letter law enforcement and intelligence service in the US government and beyond and be hounded by the press about why our company allows money laundering, supports terrorists, drug runners, espionage operations and so forth and so on. Hmmm.... This is quite a poser, isn't it. I don't know what to do...

  • When I heard about this today, I told my husband that it's just not smart to have Paypal tied to anything this controversial. The outcome for the Paypal customer most likely isn't going to be a good one.

If they do, it'll be just another example of a company bowing to political interference from an obviously-very-worried government.

It's being reported on this side of the Atlantic that some US politicians are even publically advocating the murder of the people involved in the Wikileaks project. Makes you wonder what they are worried about (and, since there doesn't appears to have been any arrests for it, why incitement to murder doesn't seem to be a crime over there!).

    Fear mongering at its best.

You really have no precedent to back up your claim. On a whole most purchases made through Paypal are not at the same level as wikileaks.

I am even willing to bet that some one who knows some one called Paypal and asked them to shut it down.

GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb would take care of the problem.
