Text or HTML For My Autoresponder?

I'm using Aweber and wanted to hear from everyone which one they use, text or HTML, to send to their lists.

Would it be wise to use the HTML simply to allow anchor text instead of the full URL for a web page, and just type up the email in all text? Hope this makes sense...

If I send HTML, which I do on occasion, I always send a plain text as well, as there are still some issues with HTML mail.

I agree. Aweber lets you send both. Write the email you want to send in the normal text email box and then just copy and paste in into the html email box. By using html you can then change the links etc to more attractive wording.

How does that work? It sends one Email but with two formats? When I get an email with pictures and it asks if I want to load the pics, is that a simple text email and an HTML rolled into one?

Yes and Yes. Some email clients will not display html emails correctly this is why its good to have a text version. I always try to send an html and plain text version in all my emails.

Do both. I always do both a Html and a plain text message.

Yeah it basically sends two emails rolled into one, if your client can read HTML it will try to load that one, if not it will load the plain text one.

Kinda simplified, but the basic idea.

What do you all add to an HTML version of your email that isn't in your text version? I really only want to send text at the moment, a simple welcome email, but later on down the road I might be sending an ebook cover image or something. What else can be added for value?

Yeah, obviously it allows you to add images, etc into your email, change the formatting of text, insert a tracking pixel into your email so you know if it has been opened, and also change the wording of your hyperlinks.

So instead of saying 'Click here: http://www.mysite.com' you can just say 'Click Here' and those words are hyperlinked. So it's a good way to hide long and ugly tracking or affiliate links. That's probably the main advantage to me.

Excellent. I like the idea of tracking with the pixel. I'm more on the creative side of Web Development so "spicing" up the email should be fun. Hopefully I won't annoy my list!

It's good to do both because so many people check email on phones and not everyone has a fancy smart phone. Even if they do, photos often don't display automatically. Mine doesn't. I usually don't look at the photos because of that.

I have found that ext works better with aweber as html seems to get marked as spam...

Do you mean in aweber the spam monitor marks them higher? Or have you sent a lot of html emails and actually seen them go into the spam folder? Just wondering...

It all depends on the content of the email. Just because you use html is not a direct reason for your email to go straight to spam. It depends how many images, links, the wording in the email, and a whole host of other stuff.

It also depends on the list you are sending it to and what you have written. You might write a crappy email and your list all marks it as spam. Had nothing to do with it being an html, your email just sucked.
