Is It Me Or Does FireFox Just Suck

Firefox doesn't like me, either. It does things to me that never happen to anyone else. Similarly, whenever I try to use a Mac or desktop Linux, I get mysterious crashes and errors that don't happen to other people.

Meanwhile, I occasionally run across someone who has similar problems with IE or with Windows, and that never happens to me.

I honestly believe that there are certain types of people in the world that specific software programs don't like, and those programs misbehave whenever those people try to use them.

So I'd suggest maybe you're just not a Firefox person. Maybe try Chrome, or Opera, or even IE. I know nobody likes IE, but it's been good to me over the years. I've also never had a problem with Opera. Chrome misbehaves here and there for me, but it's not terrible.

Firefox has some great add-ons, but man is it a pain in the ass at times. For general surfing I'm quickly becoming a Chrome fan.

About the only thing I've been using Firefox for is managing my files on S3. I just found a Chrome extension that does the same thing. Buh-bye Firefox.

I use chrome, if your running anything else it may not load pages though.

As far as internet marketing goes its not great as there arent as many plugins but it works.

Ditto for me. I generally don't have any issues with FF. I use Chrome some, but mostly FF. I can't stand IE at all.

I use firefox. yes it crashes once or twice a week but it has a nice recovery system and never lets me down otherwise. usually when it crashes I am running 6 other programs including but not limited to WoW, photoshop, Firebird, Kaspersky, trillian, skype and more. Any I never run any less than 2 browser sessions, one on each monitor.

I am a diehard FF user and always will be. I've tried Chrome and I'll try it again I'm sure sooner or later. I'd just rather not support google's "late to the party and gonna steal your thunder" type attitude. Not gonna happen. And Lary Page will continue to be pissed off at Mark Zuckerburg because he cant put together a social network that people enjoy. He's tried and failed.

Sorry, I have seen a recent video with Lary drilling Zuckerburg about Facebook and he just seems like a jealous *******. This went way off topic but it ties into why i wont use most of googles tools whether they run the PR or not.

It seems with every upgrade to Firefox it gets worse and worse. Videos tend to crash it for me, not only the browser, but it shuts my whole computer down. That never happens with IE. I've got other reasons I dislike IE, mainly because it mishandles CSS so much. I'm going to be trying Chrome myself as I've heard a lot of good things about it.

I'm a heavy FF user. I use lots of plug-ins. Maybe it has crashed a couple times in a couple years, definitely not enough for me to think about.

My guess that if you are having lots of crashes it is related to other system settings on your computer. It would be worth tracing the problem.

Chrome has lots of potential, it's just not a mature product yet. I'd say that in two years it will have the functionality and 3rd party support to make it the best.

Certain plugins, including some popular ones for SEO and marketing purposes, will slow down Firefox. Get rid of them or only run them when you need them.

Next, Firefox uses a SQLite database to store browsing history and such. This database can create a significant slowdown when it gets full. Therefore, old data needs to be purged (aka vacuumed) every so often and there are settings you can use to limit the size of this data.

And, Firefox uses what's called a 'plugin container'. The idea was to isolate badly behaving plugins from the program to prevent crashes and performance problems. Unfortunately, this hasn't been too successful. Therefore, you should try turning this feature off to see if things improve.

As for Chrome, I'd prefer to avoid the 'free' Google ice cream...

Care to name them? Slow isn't really my problem, but I thought it might help others.

That's exactly why I haven't tried Chrome yet. Running out of options though. Most everything else is just a clone of IE or Mozilla.

SEOQuake can create slowdowns as well as temporary bans from search engines. There are some settings you can use to limit these problems. Some other similar plugins (I don't recall names right off) I've tried haven't been as adjustable and had more performance issues.

Of course, there are the usual assortment of toolbars and other stuff that can cause flaky behavior so plugins are the first place to look for potential problems.

A regular history delete doesn't purge these tables, it only deletes the record, leaving a blank space where the data once was. In fact, regular deletes may actually fragment the database more and cause performance problems since FF, by itself, doesn't compress the database. There are several plugins available that will do this compression for you.

I was getting quite frustrated with FF myself until I discovered that the SQLite database it uses needed to be purged and compressed regularly and the plugin container turned off.

FF blows lately. Crashes at least 1-2x/day.

Several months ago, I stopped being able to edit theme code in Wordpress dashboards (ONLY in Firefox). It was grayed out. I have to use Chrome for that.

Most of the problems with firefox results from other crap on the persons pc, most pcs have some type of messed up virus/malware/adware/f'd up registry on them, or just simply need to be defragged.

I'm not a firefox fanboy or anything its just i've fixed a ton of pcs and they all were a mess. I personally think its a memory hog that has a leak that can't ever be fixed. But its the best out there by far.

Personally, I keep the FF plugins to the minimum essential and have never had any issues with FF. But the day they forced the plugin-container.exe file upon us, all hell broke loose on all of my computers.

My solution was found here: Permanently Disable Firefox Plugin Container.exe Process

Check your Task Manager and see if the file is running and the type of resources it is using, as bgmacaw pointed out, turn this feature off and test your system; that is in all probability, the root cause of your issue.

I just have three plugins. S3Fox, Screengrab, and Swoosty. That file is running, and using about 17k in memory. That doesn't seem like much. If I use the Task Manager to end the process for it, will the plugins stop working?

I use Firefox and haven't had any issues with it at all, I definitely prefer it over IE, but I haven't used Chrome so can't compare it with that, but I don't think I will since I like Firefox!

I used to love FF but I almost never use it anymore except to check web stats. I kept getting horrible malware and virus problems no matter what I used to stop them. I went back to IE and I have never had a virus or malware problem since. When I had switched to FF the first time it was because IE would crash on me almost every day. Now that I switched back it is working flawlessly for many months. I think Windows 7 and the latest IE are a great combo for me anyway.

Firefox seems to think that I am not connected to the internet when I most certainly am. As a result I am often unable to bring up the page I want. I am experimenting with Chrome now to see if it is more reliable.

I was thinking I was the only one with issues. I always get frustrated when Firefox crashes which happens several times a day. So my stress levels are high, very high. :p

Sometimes I feel like throwing my pc out of the window. Don't know why I'm still using Firefox.

Plus the Warriorforum doesn't function properly with Firefox. So I just use Internet Explorer to get on WF. I always switch between 2 browsers but mainly use Firefox for other purposes, despite of its crashes.

I'm amazed by all of these responses. My FF runs like a champ. Are you all installing a bunch of garbage plug-ins? I have only a few plug-ins and have zero issues with crashes. Not sure why you're all having problems, but it could be the Indian, not the arrow.

Use Firefox. Love Firefox. For a while, I used Chrome and really liked it. But there weren't so many extensions then, so I switched back...

I might convert again, if the RockMelt thing stops crashing every now and then.

Firefox crashes on my completely randomly about 2-3 times per day. It only started doing this within the past few months, and although I'm skilled with computers, I can't for the life of me figure out why it's crashing. I lost half of a Wordpress post earlier and I could have screamed. I refuse to use IE/Chrome/Opera, though.

  I don't have too many issues with Firefox... I love Love LOVE the plugins! If Chrome has plugins similar to SEOQuake, NoFollow/DoFollow, and Rank Checker I'm down to switch! But I haven't done any research on Chrome.

Firefox is too crowded. Add-ons take up too much space, that's why it's usually slow. Google Chrome is really sleek and fast. You should look into it.

My FF isn't crowded at all. 3 or so plug-ins and maximum browser window space. Just got to find a good theme with smaller, sleeker buttons.

When Chrome decides to save sessions I will begin using it more frequently. I run 6 or 7 FF browsers with 7 - 10 tabs a piece. I looooove the FF save session feature.

I upgraded Chrome and still don't see any save session feature. What am I missing? I searched Google and didn't see anything about Chrome being able to save your session except some plug-ins that would save your session.

Another thing,

On my system, I have observed Firefox to be very susceptible to what appears to be memory leak. By memory leak I am referring to;

"Essentially, the program fails to release memory that in no longer being used back into the pool of available memory. The result is that the used memory is not cleared for use by other computer programs, and thus diminishes the operating capacity of the computer."

Try this experiment.
1. Make sure all instances of FF are closed. Then open FF with webpages open in 5 tabs and check the amount of memory that is being used. You can check memory usage in Windows by opening up the task manager(ctr+alt+del) and looking under the performance section.

2. Browse for a couple hours, open more tabs, close some tabs, just do your thing and after some hours of browsing end up with only 5 tabs open again (could be the same 5 tabs if you want to be more scientific)

Whenever I did this I noticed that after browsing for a while the amount of memory used by Firefox would increase dramatically even after I would close most of the windows/tabs. The fix? Completely close out the program every once in a while.

Chrome seems to have much less of a problem with this.

noangel: It's possible you have the stupid Rootkit virus. I did and it would allow me to search in IE and FF, but whenever I clicked on a link it would immediately redirect ALL of my clicks on the search results to spam sh*t.

FF rocks mainly because of the awesome plugins- especially the SEO plugins, research plugins.

IE - SUCKS bigtime as it freezes A Ton!

Chrome is the big shiny - ok- :p couldn't help myself- new kid on the block-
but I still luv FF the best.

I've been a major Firefox fan for years, but recently it has been freezing up and crashing a dozen times a day. I don't know if it's the recent updates or what. I'm glad to hear some other people are having these problems. I was seriously starting to think it was my computer.

If it has any problem getting to the internet connection, it will tick the 'work offline' button (under file) all by itself. Just untick it and that's fixed.

I've researched this thoroughly and pouring a double brandy works better in this situation.

Actually I don't have problems with ff crashing, or with slow loading, but one problem I run into repeatedly is that it won't let go of its cache. When working on the css (mostly, but sometimes the html too) of a new page, that part has been a complete pain in the neck.

I have zero issues with FF. It runs like a champ. XP home, FF 3.6.12, 15 addons.
The plugin container is running. I do have Memory Fox installed -
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/53880/
which, on my computer at least, seems to have solved the memory issues.
I'm on the web at least 4 hours every day. I can't remember the last time FF crashed.

I've had no problems with FF or the latest IE (8?).

My wife's laptop, on the other hand, is a different story.

She didn't start having problems until we moved her "up" to version 3.x, then it got to be a major PITA. One of the problems is capacity. It's a 6 year old machine, 2 megs RAM, only 40 Meg HD which runs almost full.

She's basically down to web browsing, and a few related apps like Adobe Reader.

Even stripped down like that, FF took forever to load and crapped out regularly.

Dumped FF and put her back on IE, and the problems are mainly gone.

I haven't tried Chrome since moving to this computer. I'm leery of too many applications from one vendor, especially one with as long a nose as Google. Tried Opera and Safari a bit, but still mainly use FF for the plugins.

FF and Intel do not seem to play well together. On an Intel machine, I use IE or SlimBrowser. On an AMD machine, FF works like a charm. Probably other issues, but seem to be moot on an AMD machine by my experience.

Yes, Firefox has been a nightmare for me lately.

I use it when I want to run SEOQuake, use either the Google or SEOMoz toolbars, and when I'm tweaking a site layout and need to use Firebug.

I use IE when I'm adding posts or plugins in Wordpress. It seems to run faster on the backend out of the three major browsers.

I use a base install of Chrome for general internet browsing.

I never had problems with FireFox unless it was something related to the computer. However, it happens that on the garbage computer I got it starts to consume too much of memory but never crashes.

On the other side, i don't use many plugins (perhaps 4), and i don't use seoquake either, instead I use Aaron Wall's seo toolbar (which pretty much has same functions as seoquake with little extras).

Chrome? Ah gotta love that Google icecream

... Currently I got 7 browsers installed (stop laughing, i need it for work), and I can really say that my preferred one is FireFox, following with IE8 and then Safari, Opera etc.. (yup, Chrome is right before IE6 in my list lol) actually, I like Safari and IE8 pretty much as of lately, really smooth working both.

As I mentioned above, FF runs great for me right now, but there have been a few hiccups in the past. Whenever I've had a problem, I've found that 95% of the time it's one of the addons causing it. So... close FF and open it in safe mode, which disables all addons. If things are working OK in safe mode, then one or more of your addons is the culprit.

Go back to normal FF and disable ALL of your addons, then re-enable them one at a time. When your problem reappears, you've found the malfunctioning addon.

Very few of the available addons are created by the people at Mozilla. Over the years I've found quite a few of them that were flawed.

I have enjoyed using FireFox up until this week, but I am not sure it is FireFox yet. I am having all kind of trouble this week staying up. Since this happened all of a sudden I am thinking maybe my modem is getting ready to go out. But FireFox does crash alot, so I saw where someone said there was something about that in this thread so I will try and find that post, but my problem had been the sites just not coming up.

Firefox has so many indispensable toolbars and plugins, and while I have started to like Chrome it can actually be a big drain on your computer resources (especially memory) when opening up multiple tabs, i.e. a dozen or more.

I was about ready to give up on Firefox until Mozilla released version 4.0 Beta 7. While it is still a Beta (non-finalized version) it has dramatically reduced the occurrences of crashing for me, and with its improved crash protection when a tab crashes it does not bring the whole browser down with it, unlike the earlier Firefox browsers. In addition to that, it's much faster and more streamlined than the earlier Firefox 3.X versions!

I've fallen in love all over again with Firefox 4.0, and I can't wait for the finalized version to be released. Even this Beta release is pretty polished, and I haven't really seen anything untoward happen so far in over 2 weeks of testing this!

computer crashes, reboots, or you close Google Chrome, when you open it
again, it will open all the pages that were open before you closed it.

FF does that too, but IE does not.

Hmm. I have the latest version of Chrome and I've opened several tabs and close Chrome down. When I re-open it no tabs manifest.

I think Opera is the most accomplished of all the browsers but for whatever reasons nobody seems to use it, including myself. Maybe it's just a bit too cutting edge and innovative.

Obviously IE sucked, sucks and will continue to suck for ever. MS still doesn't have a clue how to build a browser. I'll never forgive them for the vast amount of extra work I've had to put in over the years just to make web sites work in their garbage. Essentially MS has single-handedly retarded the whole web development industry and they did it on the back of the Windows monopoly. I hope people remember this and keep biting into the uncompetitive (until recently) MS market share. MS's latest farce is their objection to Spoon providing virtual clients for testing. It was one of the few easy ways to see how badly IE6 and 7 was mangling a perfectly valid site. This is a disaster and typical MS, money first and the customer nowhere. I loathe them.

Chrome is the boss for JavaScript but if Google starts gaining ground in the browser market I see this as potentially very dangerous. Do we really want them to have control of the largest and most popular search engine AND the browser people use to access it? Smells like more MS BS to me. Plus they have a policy of using the public as guinea pigs by inflicting beta releases that masquerade as production quality. So don't assume smooth sailing in the future.

I agree that Firefox is fumbling the ball. The memory leak problem is horrible. Bottom line though, if you are a developer Firefox is the only serious choice. I suspect the same holds true for technically savvy marketers too.

Safari is a joke browser (on Windows anyway) and this new Flood is essentially Chrome with a social media bandwidth hog build on.

So for fast browsing, Chrome is tops but I hope they don't get too much penetration. For anything else it has to be Firefox.

Have a look at this for a quick hack to alleviate the Firefox memory problem. It works for me.

Actually, I just installed firefox because IE was giving me the business...

It's working much better now. Hopefully I don't run into the same thing you are experiencing....

I usually have about 7 to 10 tabs open in 2 windows and IE was slow and constantly crashing, requiring a reboot. It's amazing how much time that was wasting. I guess if Firefox ends up failing, theres always chrome.

  I used to be very attached to Firefox, too. Mostly because I didn't trust Google chrome because of that unique ID it used to have.
  
  But I just couldn't stand Firefox any longer. It takes up way to much time to load. Also the layout of chrome is just more wide-screen friendly.
  
  I moved my task-bar to the right side of the screen so I have more vertical space available. Chrome takes up very small space in that direction so I really have the largest possible view on the web page.
  
  My advice is that you don't make your web browser a religion, though. Once the new "generation" of browsers comes out I'll reevaluate my choice.

Blimey. Until this thread I thought that my Firefox problems were down to my pc!

Ever since I began using it Firefox has been completely unreliable. Takes forever to open up and then when it does, just when you are in the middle of something it will crash and crash again............and again.

But I have to keep it in my browser collection in order to test websites across browsers.

Remove all your plugins and see how it runs. Then add the plugins back one by one until you find the culprit.

That is not due to FF. You've picked up some adware or malware somehow. If FF seems to be the only thing infected, uninstalling it and downloading the new version might take care of the problem.

Another simple thing to do would be to download Avast, and install that. You will have to do a restart to complete the install. On the restart window you will be given the option of doing a boot time scan. Tick that box. Avast will stop the restart about half way through and do a complete scan when nothing else is moving.

Because it can use all the cpu and memory it doesn't take long. And it is really good at finding the nasties.

I've often had over 150 tabs open in ff without problems, but just in one window. I also have a beast of a laptop, a 17 inch Lenovo. They were mostly lightweight pages, mostly with just text, from my forum browsing days. I just moved to another country and had to leave the desktop behind. Looks like this is going to be my only machine for awhile.

From my experience Google Toolbar and the Skype extension absolutely destroy Firefox. At one point, my browser was using over 1.5gb of RAM due to the leaks these plugins caused.

If I had to guess, I'd say most of you having a hard time are using the Google Toolbar. Get rid of it and it might help. SEO quake is okay for me, but that's with the toolbar disabled. I just have the little button at the bottom.

Now I have Google Chrome working again, I can tell you how to have it save your pages.

1. Click on the Spanner on the top right of the page.
2. Go to the Tab that says "Basics"
3. Under the heading "On Startup" select the middle option, which says:
"Reopen the pages that were opened last"

And Voila! :-)

  The free browsers are the best. There are ways to fix the hiccups. Use Linux Ubuntu instead of Windows or MAC? Free is best.

The biggest problems with the newest Firefox are the add-ons and plugin container - these crash all the time.
Try to pinpoint the add-ons that might be causing the problem, and uninstall them.
Otherwise check out other more "hippie" browsers like Opera

I have been using FF since before it was FF. I started online with netscape 2.0 back in the dinosaur days.
I didn't even know that windows 95 had a browser named IE at the time.

AS for the current versions of FF, the only reason it will crash is if you have a problem with either your computer or with plugins/add ons.

For those of you that have said that it worked just fine and then lately it has been giving you problems, guess what, you need to get rid of some of the junk that is slowing it down/making it crash.

I don't remember the last time I had FF crash on me. I do admit that I don't have hundreds of windows/tabs open at the same time.

As a side note, I usually don't use many tabs at all, I just open new windows instead.

Firefox seems to be working fine for me. I have used others but I keep finding myself going back to it. Just my humble opinion, For what it's worth.

Firefox is still the best for me. I can use certain plugins you cannot find anywhere else. I like IE8 but have an MSFT avoidance issue, and Chrome is just not there yet, just another Google MeTo product. Its FF all the way and you just have to balance your plugins to keep it stable.

I use Opera a lot. It is the cleanest and the fastest browser in Market. Their New javascript engine is more advanced than others. Also, I like the look and feel of Opera.
