You can either use the "upload a file method", or find a plugin for that (some of the SEO plugins have an option of adding the code), or directly edit your theme file to add the code.

  • Be sure to verify both the www and non-www and then set your preference under "Site Configuration" > "Settings" > "Display URL as..."

As a personal preference I always use the non-www, but that's just me.

What you need to do is create a file with the name and extension provided by Google webmaster.

Simple start a new file with notepad ans save it as xxxxx.html where xxxxx is the code google webmaster provided. remember this is an empty file.

Now take the file and uploaded it to the site root directory.

go back to Google webmaster and push the verify button. There is no need for plug in

Depending on the theme you are using, you can also use this method.

      1. Click appearence > editor
      2. Chose header (header.php) from the right
      3. Paste the code google gives you between the <head> tags.

This is the method I use everytime and that works for me. Just keep in mind, when you change themes you need to re-add the code to your new theme header-file.
