What doest google cache mean?

I was just talking to an SEO expert and he told me I could start my backlinking efforts as soon as my site was cached by google. But what does it mean if my site is cached and how do I check it?

Is it just whether or not they are indexed in google?

Google cache is googles "History" of the site. It saves the webpage to it's system at regular intervals, so if a site is down, you can still find the last copy of the page google saved.

To check your cache, type in the address bar:

http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:URL

So the URL for CNN would be
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:http://www.cnn.com

Okay, I'm interested in this too.

I outsourced backlinking for my site and the last time my site was cached was on the 27th of November and since my site has had another 200 backlinks so does this mean that until my site is cached, those backlinks won't be "recognised" by Google's search algorithms?

They will be recognize but not cache. It has to be spider again and put those additional backlinks its cache. What cache does is just gives Google quick access to your site and links. It is just like a browser. It caches images and content. When you access the same page for the second time, it loads faster than the first time.

More significant with the cache is that you have a greater understanding of how often you site is actually being searched by the Google Spiders. You can use it to judge how long it will be before the next time your site is spidered, then plan accordingly when making changes.
