Importance of a List?

i'm new but as of right now i fail to see a need to have a huge list.

are you targeting re-buys with it? send out emails with a new product on it?

can someone please explain the importance of having a list, methods of acquiring list-ees, and so on.

if your selling physical products from Amazon, why is it so important to have a list of people you email?

thanks in advance

Why build an opt in list?

    1. Those who subscribe to your optin list are already showing an interest in your product or service
    2. Those who show an interest provide a much better conversion rate.
    3. You have their permission to market to them until or unless they optout so you are not spamming.

How can a list help you make more money?

    1. An optin list gives you the opportunity to target those that are the most apt to purchase
    from you.
    2. An optin list provides you with additional chances to sell to those who did not make a purchase when you emailed them your initial affiliate promotions.
    3. With an impressive opt in list you will be better able to attract joint venture partners.
    4. Reputation is a vital part of Internet marketing and credibility is vital. You have the opportunity
to establish a good reputation and your credibility when you build a list and provide valuable, problem solving content for them.

Those who build solid responsive opt in lists make long term, reliable income and those who do not will most likely join the growing number internet marketer who've failed to make money online, because they have not put forth the time and effort required to build a profitable opt in list.

In short, when you build a list you are branding yourself. This means your subscribers are more likely to buy from you again and again as long as you can differentiate yourself from the hordes of other Amazon affiliates.

This is why warriorforum is so helpful; I wouldn't have considered including an email newsletter. There's nothing to lose aside from capturing the attention of those that want to learn more.

    Two good reasons:

    1. Most people don't buy right away. They go off, maybe, "to think about it" ... and forget all about you. A series of autoresponder message (most say the magic number is 7) can get more sales.

    2. With a list, people gradually get to know you better. Most prefer to buy from someone they know. Without a list you have a hobby, not a business.

You aren't "selling physical products from Amazon", you're selling advertising space to Amazon. This is what confuses some people. If you're an affiliate you aren't selling the product, like vacuum cleaners or cameras, you're selling advertising space that's, hopefully, attracting serious buyers.

You can use a list to bring in this traffic or you can use SEO or PPC. Just always keep in mind that you're selling advertising space and buying traffic to the retailer and you're not selling the product you're advertising to consumers.

As for list building in general on these type of sites, I don't do it myself. First of all, many of the big players don't look favorably on email sourced direct traffic (especially Adsense and eBay EPN, the bulk of my niche sites). Secondly, trying to collect email addresses works against my goal of quickly moving the targeted visitor toward a buying opportunity.

I do collect emails on my non-IM related product sales sites though and I only use emails to promote my own related products, not affiliate offers.

My advice would be to start building a list NOW. If you don't, in a year or two from now when you realize how much money you can make from lists you will be like, man I should have started building this list from the beginning.

You don't NEED a list, but I don't see why you wouldn't want to build one anyways. I have an e-commerce business and have 3 lists for that business. One that downloaded free instructions on the product. Another list that is a "Discount Club". And then a 3rd list for existing customers.

This is a business where there isn't much educating that needs to be done. It's a product...if you want it, then you buy it. You can't even make a case for sending out tips or content because, trust me, there isn't a ton that people would want to read.

And in 2010, I generated close to 10% of my sales from my email list. About half of those are "passive", meaning I just let the autoresponder do it's work. And the other half were from email blasts.

So you don't HAVE to have a list, but why wouldn't you want one? It's a simple way to communicate with your customers/prospects anytime you want.

I think it is a wrong question. everyone on the forum will answer you, very important.

the reasons may vary, but, if everyone say so, do you really want to know why?

A list is extremely important for a couple of different reasons. For one, many consumers don't buy a product on their first introduction to it. Many of these folks can be a buyer but they have to see it 2 or 3 times first. When they are on your list you have a chance to put that product in front of them again. Secondly, as your list grows you gain a large group of targeted people who are interested in the products and services that you offer. You can simply send an email promoting a product/service and make affiliate sales over and over again.

Building your list is one of the most important parts of being successful with IM. Once you have interested customers on your list, you will be able to market and promote products/services to them.

Without a list, you will always be searching for new customers. Thus wasting alot of valuable time, effort and money.

I wish I had started building a list when I first started IM, Email marketing is vital.

No matter how you drive visitors to your website via paid or SEO.

If your traffic stream stops for any reason, you can still earn from your list of people who have gone out of thier way to request information from you.

The biggest reason is that you keep the TRAFFIC you generate.

If you have not figured this out thus far, to be successful in IM, you need traffic. Whats the point of sending traffic to any platform only hoping they'll purchase something?

    Rather keep them forever!

Just look at all the guru's: you think they have niche websites, or whatever other platform? They have gigantic lists.

The point is making money by providing targeted buying traffic to advertising clients.

Does an outdoor advertising company worry about capturing the names of everyone who passes by their billboard? Or are they worried about placing their billboards in areas that will produce the best traffic for their real customers, advertising space buyers?

Does a publisher of a free advertising magazine worry about capturing the names and addresses of every person who picks up a copy of their mag at a convenience store or mall?

Yup... it's mainly about targeted traffic. My old real estate had like 15000 people on it and most of them never spent a dollar with me.

The other point is that your lists should be segregated into groups. Most important, so you know what offers to send to whom.

        And...

Use the list to actually build a relationship... otherwise it's probably worthless after 30 days when they totally forget who you are.

IMO, having a list itself is not as important as the purpose of the list. A list lets you maintain regular contact with your prospects. Is that an integral part of your business? If so then yes it is important to have a list, and the size of it will grow with your business, however the most important thing is to put out high quality content and provide your list with worthwhile updates.

ok sound advice for the most part, however, how can someone who "promotes" physical products benefit from having a list and building relationships with said buyers?

how would you even get people just looking for say "turkey fryers" signed up for an email distro? "say include email for updates of future cooking products?"

it seems to me the majority of answers seemed geared to the e-book, sell information style. am i just hearing it all wrong?

You could give tips on how to use said Turkey Fryer the best, how to keep it clean and get the most value out of it

Then you can upsell them things that people who buy Turkey Fryers also buy

You can do it this way but it's really a different business model than the niche targeted advertising site model. As I mentioned above, people get confused about the difference and sometimes try to muddle the two together.

For example, if you get known as an authority on turkey frying then you will build a following that will take your recommendation for a turkey fryer as pure gold and buy it. You'll make some good money that way and tend to attract advertisers interested in promoting products via your site and email list.

On the flipside, you might have a rather generic turkey fryer review site where you have some rather generic reviews along with ads. And, let's assume you've done good SEO to pull in targeted traffic. You'll make money that way too without having to schmooze a list (aka spending a lot of time building relationships). Maybe not as you would as the turkey fryer king but, then again, this wouldn't be your only promotional site.

It depends on your business model. If you have an Adsense empire, not so important. If you sell your own products/services, you're foolish not to build a list.

How many businesses in the "real" world do you know that rely entirely on a steady flow of one-time, "in-and-out again" traffic? Not many that last very long. What companies with longevity absolutely depend on is loyal, repeat customers. That base is their bread-and-butter. That's precisely what your list represents.

So, again, if you're building the kind of business where you want the same people to buy from you over and over again, build a list. If not, don't.

Every big business, small business owner, or up starting business has leads and are developing new leads everyday.

It is VERY important to have leads, and not just a list of information, but a list of information that you can call one by one as a friend. These friends could be customers at some point in your marketing career. It's your job to present new products and services that might benefit these friends in your list. Be sure to never sell them, just recommend or suggest. They will see what you have, and make up their minds from there.

Most business advertise on a daily basis to get their phone ringing, and email flooding with contacts. Those who contact the business are placed into a database a.k.a. list.

Now when ever that business has something to tell their valued friends, they send them an email, letter in the mail, or just a friendly phone call.

So far as retail locations go that would include most fast food restaurants and fuel stations and convenience stores along major roads.

Of course. If your business is set up right next to a serious flow of interstate traffic, you can survive without regular customers. But that's not the typical scenario. In this analogy, it would be like you or me setting up a brand new website and just happening to have it instantly start getting tons of free search engine traffic. How likely is that?

And, more to the point, would YOU want to be at the mercy of the search engines for your business's livelihood? Think about the highway service station owner without a supporting nearby town... if the state suddenly re-routes that major traffic flow, he's out of business. I'd much prefer being the service station owner on Main Street who can fall back on his regulars.

Fortunately, it doesn't cost that much for us to start a new location or to move.

I do depend primarily upon search engine traffic for online earnings, either in the form of SEO or, on occasion, Adwords (non content network). It works rather well for me at this time with the business model I'm using and I don't see it as compatible with building a consumer email list aside from the few digital products I sell.

That said, if I were to start selling physical products again I'd certainly place a greater emphasis on email marketing than I did the first time around.
