Exit Popups on Products Review Sites.

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on exit pop-ups on product review websites.

Not for an opt-in form or anything, just when you've established which review is converting the most have a featured 'SPECIAL OFFER' review pop-up in an effort to keep them on the page.

I saw this on a Product Review site recently. It annoys me, but then exit pop-ups generally do.

Thoughts?

It depends. If the popup provide better value, then I don't mind. imho

Exit pop ups annoy me to no end, so I'm biased against them. Then again, if you can snag a sale that way, I guess from a marketing perspective it's a good deal.

Many of the so called "gurus" use exit popups so you can take it they do work although we all seem to hate them.

Yes and no. I think they piss more people off than actually add value.

I visited a site recently where the opt-in pop up was set to blur the actual contents of the page. The only option I had was to opt-in, and then be able to read the web page contents, or leave.

      Guess which option I chose?

Keep in mind that if you advertise your site on AdWords then you'll need to create a separate landing page without a popup, as they forbid pops in their TOS.

They work on me because I always press 'Don't leave the Page', just to see if there's any money off offers lol.

Is there a way to do that so the pop-up only comes when they press back too far or close the window? The only outbound links on my site are affiliate links

Fact is that exit pop ups work, one of my sites can attribute 50% of its sales to an exit pop up. But they need to be used wisely and not over done.

Any one suggesting that exit pop ups are annoying in this thread need to put their marketing head on and leave the consumer head at home. After all if your exit pop is triggered that person is leaving for good any way.

I hate pop-ups, thus I'll never use them, because I consider them an offence against common sense.

On the other hand, I'm far from being a market.

Thats complete rubbish, you probbaly hate them because some so called marketers employ too many, but used correctly in the right places, with the right message will only increase sales.

As soon as you start start to understand bounce rates (yes we all have them) and that 98% of a typical sites traffic leaves WITHOUT doing anything you will then start to increase your sales.

Don't think like a consumer when it it comes to getting your marketing right.

I'm sitting in much the same place you are. My sales funnel product includes an exit pop-up tool, and goes over how to use it, but I say outright in the product that I don't like these things and don't use them myself.

Trouble is, lots of people do, and lots of people want to. So I kind of have to provide what my market wants.

Would I ever use an exit pop-up? I don't know. Maybe. Right now, probably not. Five years from now, who knows?

Who cares if it annoys them.

For a product review site I say go ahead and do it. You are not building a list from what I gather so all those visitors that are leaving will more than likely never return to your site anyway. So you owe it to yourself to have one more stab at converting them into money.

Those who say they find them annoying - so what. We are marketers and we are usually visiting countless sales pages a day and are inundated with the things. It's no wonder we get annoyed by them. But the everyday consumer is not as heavily exposed to things like this as we are.

You know what else I find annoying...

    - Door to door salesmen
    - having my letterbox filled with fliers
    - Being passed fliers on the street when I'm walking to work

But why do you think people are still doing these things? Because they work. If for every 90 people you P%$# off, there are 3 people who buy your product through the exit-pop offer, then it still makes sense to do it.

Obviously for websites where you are trying to build a brand, relationship and reputation, I would steer clear of them. But for a product review site, I say go for it.

    If there is only one
and it offers a lower price I'm all for it.
I test which price is most effective (original sales page or popup)
by comparing the original and discounted payments when looking at my sales via Paypal & Google Payments.
Popups provide me enough sales to warrant their use,
at leased for my business anyway.

I seriously beg to differ in these points. Of course you have to think like a customer when it comes to marketing, because you're trying to market to them, not to yourself...

As for "others do it, so I'll do it too because it probably works"... let's just say that believing in masses isn't a good course of action these days.

You know, good marketers aren't trying to make money by all means. They are simply good servants and profit just happens to come by along the way...

Where did you pull this quote from? No one here said that.

If you seriously think adding a pop-up on your site that is only displayed to people who were going to leave your site anyway will hurt your conversions, then this conversation is over.

I didn't say it probably works, I said it works. I have tested it over and over and so have a lot of other marketers. Popups when used correctly, work. And since we are talking about a product review site where there is no real expectation of the same visitors returning to the site regularly, you need to squeeze everything you can out of those people the moment they hit your site.

Agree - It does work if used correctly, which in most cases it's not.

If someone wants to piss off 98% of your visitors and gain only 2% - well that's the marketers choice to do so. Guess what - the marketer has automatically alienated 98% of their potential market to their site.

There's usually a reason why someone wants to leave your site...... Capturing exit traffic by offering something valuable that's of interest to the visitor is doing it properly. Being offered re-hashed pieces or outdated worthless information is what I've experienced the majority of the time. Only leads to pressing the un-subscribe option on the next email

I've lost count of the number "remove from list" options I've clicked

You need to think outside of this IM crap and stop thinking ONLY about being on someones list. There are far more ways that traffic arrives on a site and not just from a newsletter.

Exit pops should be aimed at the bounce traffic which will never come back again.

I have to say that all evidence points to the fact that exit pop-ups do work, if used judiciously. They're being used more and more, even by the big-name gurus, and you can be sure that they've done a lot of split testing to see what works best.

A common mistake novice marketers make is to assume that they think and act like the average prospect/consumer visiting their website, when this is typically not the case. The only way you're going to truly find out which approach works better is to split-test things like exit pop-ups, because doing things based just on your feelings and opinions could cost you a lot of money in the long run!

Yes, they are annoying, but they have to work. Even if you know it's going to pop up, it slaps you in the face and makes you think that there's something else here.

I get a kick out of the ones that have a voice come on in a worried tone and say, " Where are you going?"

As much as i hate pop ups when there used correctly they work no doubt about .. but what really gets to me more is the over use of up sells . One site 5 separate up sells pushed at me before i could complete transaction so cancelled...
