Amazon affiliate question

Does anybody know why in some states you are not allowed to be an affiliate of companies like Amazon?

When I filled out the application, it denied me because I live in one of those states. And what (if there are) other companies that have the same rules and why? Does not seem very fair, especially when I see posts of people being very successful in that area of marketing.

Frustrated.

In a bit more detail to what was said above, some states decided that internet sales were local and tried to force companies selling stuff, like Amazon, to collect local sales tax on all purchases.

The way the law is set up, if someone in the state is selling and someone in the same state is buying, the state wants sales tax collected.

Amazon didn't want to comply, so they nixed their affiliate programs in those states, so that they can still sell to people in that state without collecting sales tax.

There are plenty of other affiliate programs out there, Commission Junction, Share a Sale, etc. I wouldn't stress about it too much. Amazon pays the least out of any of them anyway.
