Big Wordpress problem

I downloaded a theme, and once I hit activate, this message comes up. It won't let me do anything and just shows a white page with this message.

This theme is sponsored, all links in the footer should remain intact

Any suggestions? I would rather not start over if that's possible.

You shouldn't have to start over as such, just find another free theme and try that instead.

You can always send me a PM if you're really stuck or contact me on my blog (see below).

    Hope you get it sorted,

    Try a different theme.

Did you edit the theme before uploading at all?

Well! This is a buzzard looking error msg, never heard of...

Most probably this error is theme generated. I think you have edited the footer.php to delete the link pointing to the blog designer or theme sponsor.

While activating the theme, it will check for the link.

    I hope that's the problem

I didn't get a chance to edit the footer. Just activated the theme and it did it.

I use hostgator. Is there a way to remove that theme through the cpanel?

yes, you can remove the theme, just navigate to the wp-content directory, and find that folder and delete, it, then post your results,

Next time you decide to try new themes, just get a cheapo .info domain just for testing purposes. Some themes and plugins turn out to be buggy, and while they seem fine on the demo site where you download them from, they may completely break your site when you install. Never install new themes on an existing, established wordpress site!

I bought a cheap 80 cent .info domain just for this purpose. I test all new themes, including mobile themes, and any new plugins there before installing them on my established wordpress sites. You can also tweak customizations, css codes and whatnot on there before trying it on your money site. Can't count how many times this simple method has saved me tons of headache.

Thank you Diane and Tim!!!! That worked. Just a heads up, don't use a theme called Cinematic.

Yes, that should always work: deleting a theme in use (i.e. that has been activated by you) will result in WP reverting back to the default theme.

And the real lesson is: use themes ONLY from trustworthy sites! The majority of shady "free wp themes" sites put nasty links in their footer. I have even seen cases where an originally clean, good theme was offered by another smarta$$ "free wp theme collection" site with modified footer where they put up their own links.

The themes at the wordpress.org/extend/themes/ are always clean.

as everyone suggests better to delete the theme and go with other themes. I know my friend who used similar free theme that allowed him to do nothing

he got stuck up and finally deleted that theme

you will get no good features with such themes.

It appears the writer of the theme is expecting to be compensated in the form of link-equity. They want you to maintain a backlink to their website. That way they get stronger in the search engines. If 1000 people use that theme. Then they get 1000 backlinks from all over the place.
