Best check payment over internet processor for my needs?

I know this question has probably been asked a thousand times but I wanted to ask it again with a view to my unique needs and a desire to get any new input or suggestions anyone here might care to give me.

First...

At present, I am a sole proprietor in the U.S. A web developer / consultant. My clients have up to now gone to local bank branches and paid me by making a deposit into any one of several accounts I have, in person. Yes...inconvenient to them but also something they have been willing to do to get my expertise and services.

But that's not a long term solution for how best to accept payments.

For various reasons I do not wish to use PayPal. I won't repeat my reasons against PayPal here but they are a plenty.

What I am looking to do is accept checks online. That seems to be about the cheapest and best way to make it more convenient for my clients as well as being something I don't mind doing.

One of my banks will give me such processing for $25 per month which isn't too bad but considering that I only get about 4 payments a month (i.e. once a week) at this point in time that seems rather steep.

Does anyone know of a cheaper check online processing service?

One problem is that I don't have much of any verifiable business history. I just decided to start consulting one day, put up a web site, and have been doing work on and off since then (more on than off lately). I have also moved around a lot and do not have much of any verifiable physical address for my business (which has always been where I live).

No..I am not on the run from the law or some such LOL.

That's just the way things have been.

My goal is to be able to make a living entirely remotely. The one hindrance to that goal has not been an inability to get work. I have the work. The hindrance is trying to come up with a convenient way to get client money without using PayPal. Also to get that money living outside the U.S. I am looking at moving to Mexico in the next few months and then from there to Chile, South America.

Again...please don't go recommending PayPal. I will not be using them if I can at all help it.

Any input would be appreciated.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks.

Carlos
