Twitter Traffic .. is this how you get targeted visitors?

Hi, I just wanted to know, as far as the basic premise of twitter traffic and how it works..

Do you basically just follow people that are promoting or affiliated with similar things as to what you're promoting? And then after you follow them, you'll get some of their followers, and repeat the process?

Or am I totally off base? Just have read a lot about twitter traffic, and am willing to try it, but just need a general understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing in the first place.

Thanks

I personally gave up on Twitter. Some people may be able to get results from it but I find Facebook a lot more responsive than Twitter. I don't think Twitter is as popular as it once was - it seems Facebook is going to win this war.

Thanks for that. Can you tell me, how do you get targeted fans on facebook?

I hate to have such a broad question, but I was done with social networking sites 5 years ago, and the last one I used was myspace. I have no REAL personal experience with facebook or twitter, so I'm lost as to just the basic idea of how to get targetted free traffic from these sites using a bot..

It's like someone in a 3rd world country might not be familiar at all with turning on a light switch... I'm totally in the dark (pun intended)

Agreed. twitter is a waste of time.

Twitter should not be used to market affiliate products. Give your followers value, promote free stuff to them (it's called list building).
If you follow somebody the chances are they will follow you back, if they don't un-follow them. Keep following this process. Search for your keywords using twitter search, the people it throws back are your target audience. Then give them value. Twitter takes a while but it is worth it.

Also search for people asking questions in your niche by going to search.twitter.com and answer the questions you find.

Put a lot of effort into the design of your page too, add contact details, personal photo, web address and make a professional Twitter background. make yourself look interesting and you will do well.
hmmm, thanks a lot. This really sheds some light on the situation for me. Not as cut and dry as how I used to just add friends on myspace, but seems like it'll work.

Anyone else with any other tips would be appreciated and get a thanks from me

I've not done it myself yet, but i was just watching over Jeff Johnson's Traffic Voodoo pre-launch videos yesterday, and he has this method called "Twitter blog bounce". Tweet whatever you blog, and direct your followers to your blog/website and capture their details.
Encourage them to re-tweet your content at the bottom of the post.

It sounds like an interesting yet obvious tactic. I'm gonna try that for myself.

I gave up on twitter too, about a year ago. Twitter is mostly about quick "read"-bytes enhancing short attention spans. While it may work to actually make some useful connections and even friendships, its pretty much a waste of time for commercial purposes. The very few that may click on your tweet link or twitter profile link probably wont stay around much, let alone convert - because its gotta be back to twitter living life in the fast lane. By all means though, dont take my word for it. Make your own experience - it is interesting after all and at least you will be able to join the conversation next time people talk about twitter. Just dont expect much for your business.

        I did a test today.

For me, Twitter was far more responsive than Facebook.

Twitter is less responsive than it used to be, but, for me, it continues to trounce Facebook.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I wouldn't rate Twitter a place for targeted (responsive traffic) Twitter is a numbers game, the more followers you have means the more chance you have of making a sale or sign-up...unless of course you are very well known in your targeted niche and have a number of dedicated followers.
