keyword strategy for 2 diff products on one site?

Hello warriors, (please forgive my long winded nature, I'll try to make things understandable)

I have a couple of sites whose titles refer to "work from home" and "home based jobs" However
I want to promote both "work from home" and "ecommerce website builders" from both
sites(perhaps my 1st mistake? not focusing "one one or the other" per site? at any rate)

From a keyword perspective, when placing articles in directories and linking them back to either pages or
areas of my site, is there a particular strategy or seesaw balance of writing of keywords I should be considering?

I understand that if let's say I'm writing a particular article about "website builders" the keywords in those
articles and on the page I'm linking them to on my site should be in parity for those keywords. I assume that much.
Where my confusion comes in is the keywords for my homepage and tags. Should they be "dual" so that
keywords for both are included? or just a singular focus? and then the pages that deal with "website builders" should
be completely keyword optimized separately?

Will that balance dilute the SEO efforts on those pages on my site for "website builders" since
the keywords and tags on the home page are "home based work" focused? or will there be a conflict? or

should I optimize them (rethorically and literally speaking) completely separately because SE's
will discern what is on a given page? be it the "homepage" or another page? (does the "homepage" carry more weight?)

(I'm using the "all in one SEO pack" pluggin as well)

Seems like a lot of questions but really I think I'm asking the same thing a number of different ways!

    Think more broadly with respect to keywords. I would have one page on each site (in addition to the index page) that targets your money keyword. Use Google's Wonder Wheel tool to find other related queries and add those KW's into the mix as well. You may go a step further and setup individual pages for those KWs also. Earlier this year I did an interview with Bruce Clay on LSI; that concept really helps to understand how targeting related KWs can help to drive up the quality score of a particular page.

    Thats half the battle though. You also need to focus your offsite optimization (i.e. backlinks) on those KWs, and point those links to your target pages.

    yup. normally the main keyword you are targeting will be in your domain name, while the related keywords become categories/pages on your site. To find these related keywords, use google keyword tool or the wonder wheel as the previous poster described.

      Anybody had any experience with the conversion rates generated for different spellings of keywords. I live in Canada and I have a site where I use "remedies" and just discovered that "remedys" is more popular globally. Maybe is a geo thing?

        ok so then I guess what you are saying is that the page that is for a specific sub-niche(maybe not an accurate term in this case but close enough) will stand on its own in terms of keywords on that page and google will see it as such and the main "index" page won't have an "effect" on the individual pages? so therefore the individual pages will rank for their own SEO?
