$5 Domains at 1and1 - Don't know how long the sale lasts

Hello Warriors,

I purchase all my domains from 1and1 and they have been wonderful to work with over the past several years. Today I saw they are running a few specials.

.com .net .org are all $5.00 at the moment
.info is like $1

If you call 1and1 customer service you will have a real person on the phone within 2-3 minutes. No I don't work for them, no aff links or other crap. Godaddy pissed me off long ago with their upsells, 1and1 won't waste you time with that junk. Anyways, its a good deal. Have a good one.

I have never bought any domains from them yet, but you certainly have given me something to think about.

Thanks for sharing, all of you

I read nodaddy ... I have had domains with them for years and never had a single problem. I use Namecheap also and never had a single problem.

There are many horror stories about 1&1. Use them if you want to. I just want others to know beforehand what they may encounter.

Indeed. It's one of the very few that I honestly think I wouldn't touch at any price.

$5 would not tempt me. Even $1 would not tempt me, from 1-and-1.

    My advice:

Never (ever) - under any circumstances - use 1&1 for domain name registration.

When I was a web-host, any customer who made the mistake of registering their domain(s) there had indescribable headaches (as did I, when I naturally, on occasion, took the flak for their shortcomings) in trying to get them to allow a change of DNS/name-servers. They may have even made it impossible (just to try to force you into hosting with them), and therefore the only option was to transfer the domain out ...

... and for that, they even wanted faxed/photocopied documentation and a whole myriad of other nonsense. None of it was really necessary, of course; all of it, as far as I could see, was just to make it hard-to-impossible to ever leave them or host elsewhere.

Things might be a bit different these days, but they were - and perhaps still are - a company of immense frustration and dubious/questionable practice.

    That is all.

If you're really that serious about $5 domains, then just use GoDaddy...

I choose them for convenience whether my purpose is to flip or web development

    ANyway...if you're a $5 domain seeker....here's my gift to you:

All AGED domains ...ALL with pagerank 1's and one with a PR2 ( i don't own these domains. They're currently being auctioned @ $5 with NO BIDDERS as of yet. And if you ask me, most of these domains will probably be deleted because it takes time - and patience - to use Godaddy's own platform to search for these)

and speaking of 'time' ...they'll all soon to be deleted within 4 - 9 hours...

Follow me @ twitter and watch my video that'll show you how to snap ( acquire)
these domains using GoDaddy as your registrar...

    orangepopmusic.com
    mountauburnplace.com
    bymarius.com
    noyardmines.com
    thevillagehairstudio.com
    michaelredd22.com
    martymichels.com
    motorcycleservicemanual.info
    builderfeeds.com
    murielrukeseyer.com
    guymicciche.com
    huad88.com
    alanhui.net
    brentspiner.net

Note: don't forget to add 1 year reg for every domain. ( For an aged and a PR domain, that is still a bargain

Actually, this is the first time that I read anything "positive" about 1&1 and I am afraid the OP doesn't have enough experience in the registrar/host world to be able to give us an educated opinion...

Honestly, is that such a big difference between $9/year and $5/year that you should fall for a bad company? For a mere $4/year...?

P.S. Comparing it to GD is not really a convincing argument - it's a matter of lesser evil

What is the point of "thanking" people for agreeing that a registrar is bad - when you say you haven't used them?

I'm surprised at the number of people who are basically saying "I heard that" and then staunchly defending "what they heard". There are bad stories online about almost every registrar and every hosting company. However, if you haven't used the company - you don't know what's true and what isn't.

I can understand Suzanne not liking 1and1 as I know she sells sites and they aren't the easiest to transfer.

However, I've had more than 50 domains with 1and1 for years now with only ONE problem. In fact, after reading what "they" say about 1and1, I was prepared to be very angry - until I found out the problem was me and not 1and1...

The site has a good, easy to use interface, you can pay with paypal, they respond to questions fairly quickly, domains are auto-renew and canceling is easy contrary to what "they" say.

If you don't like 1and1 - that's fine. But if you've never used them - you have only hearsay. The biggest complaint I've read about 1and1 is "hard to cancel" - but it isn't hard at all if you just read the instructions.

ndescribable headaches (as did I, when I naturally, on occasion, took the flak for their shortcomings) in trying to get them to allow a change of DNS/name-servers
I just changed DNS yesterday on three domains - took about a minute and they are now repointed. I have never had any problem changing name servers on 1and1 domains. I don't use their hosting.

Some of the stories come from early days with 1and1. Originally, the company was b2b only and did not work with individuals. When they opened their business to the public, 1and1 made a common error - they assumed customers knew what they were doing.

For years, they had provided hosting and registration to companies where employees understood hosting and registration. When they went public 1and1 quickly discovered their average customer didn't have the same level of knowledge.

I don't care if people like 1and1 or not as a registrar - but I do have experience with them and don't like to see a company "dissed" based on what happened years ago or on opinion rather than facts.

          Kay,

Like I say, things may have changed.

My own first-hand (and one time) experience of them was back around 2002, but the headaches for my customers persisted right up until as late as 2006.

At the time, it was nothing to do with customers lacking the skills/knowledge to be able to configure their own domains. Many of my customers provided me with their login details out of frustration, and there was simply no facility for me to update the DNS, other than by emailing them ... and that wasn't without its own hassles, when customer service did everything they could to sidestep the fulfillment of any requests. And cancelling was anything but easy and straightforward when they were making claims that the only way they accept cancellation notices was via fax (who has or needs a fax machine at home?!) or otherwise by snail-mailing them a copy of a cancellation form together with identification, or what not.

These are the headaches I was referring to, and they were very real and very unpleasant.

Whether this is a reflection of 1&1's operational practices today is another matter. But I will say that to me, their decisions to make life as complicated for customers as they did back then spoke volumes about their ethos, in a similar way that GoDaddy's crazy website speaks volumes about theirs ... and it has, to a degree, unfortunately tarnished their reputation among a lot of people.

And when faced with a decision between going with a company which has a history of conducting itself like that (and for which many "horror stories" are still being circulated), versus one which offers no such hassles and has (by comparison) significantly less negative publicity, it's not hard to understand why a lot of people are so hesitant to recommend them - or are even somewhat outspoken against them.

People can only give their experiences, in the end. That is/was simply mine, that of my customers, and that of several friends.

Those who are considering choosing 1&1 are, of course, perfectly free to do so, if they so wish.

They have a self-service area now at http://admin.1and1.com. You can setup forwarding, update DNS create subdomains, etc all using a simple system.

"I heard that" means nothing, you have to try the service first and then give an opinion.

No point that I can see - and that wasn't what I did. Your (perfectly reasonable!) assumption about my purpose in thanking, there, was a mistaken one, Kay: I thanked Istvan for adducing the entirely correct point that comparing it with GoDaddy wasn't actually a valid or useful argument. He was right. I felt it's a bit like comparing a Skoda with a Lada (when you're sitting in a Jaguar at the time!). I can't convey all that meaning by thanking a post, but that was my reason, in that instance.

Sometimes (usually?) it's better to say "thanks", even though it's often inevitably amibiguous as to precisely why one is "thanking", than to make a fresh post for it.

Istvan knows me well enough to know that that was why I thanked him. Hope that's ok with you.

Any reference to either of the first two aforementioned cars is enough to crack me up.

My nanna had a Skoda (called Betsy) when I was young, and I've never recovered from the trauma of being spotted as a passenger in it.

Ok, so after the $5/year domain offer is up, then what does a domain at 1and1 renew for at their regular price? I looked all over their site for their regular .COM domain price but couldn't find anything. Anyone know?

One of the most troublesome issues is even if you let your domain expire or sell it you still get billed by 1and1 since the domain is only part of a so called "package" which they bill you for regardless of the domian being in the package, or not. I have also heard if you do not pay the yearly package fee you are sent to a collection agency.
As I said - it's nothing to me whether people like 1and1 or not - and namecheap is good, too.

But the information is incorrect. All domains registered are on auto-renew at 1and1 - you can't just "let it expire". You have to go to the cancel page and cancel that one domain. Registrars can't read your mind- if you want to quit, you have to tell them you are dropping the domain.

That's the price of having auto-renew. The upside is you don't lose a domain because you forgot to pay for annual renewal.

You can cancel one or more separate domains in a package without canceling the package. Because you agree to auto-renew you do owe a bill for registration if you don't cancel the domain before it renews. If you don't pay it may go to collections as you owe the bill.

Just wasted 30 minutes of my times with these people. All I wanted was to purchase some domains and nothing else.

Tried to register a domain but the user experience of the site was poor. Confusing with an array of packages such as Nortons' Antivirus, Web hosting all offered along the way. It also gave the impression the domain itseslf was free which is not the case.

One can argue the process was as such to confuse the customer into buying more then neccessary. I think I will go somewhere else.

hearsay goes a long way in my book -- if lots of people are complaining - that ought
to make you think twice about using their services(forewarned is forearmed!!!)
most people for obvious reasons rely on ratings/reviews/opinions when unsure; its makes

    ~Severin
    Thanks for the heads up!

I've used their service in the past
    and highly recommend them.

Personally, I like Namecheap. They are easy to work with, relatively cheap, etc. To me, domains are like hosting/email marketing. There is little upside to working with someone that possibly can't deliver. A few bucks on a domain aren't worth the hassles. Kinda like working with Vonage.

I have around 80 domains at 1and1. I've had them for at least 5 years. I've transferred dozens of domains in and out easily (just 2-3 clicks). I change nameservers all the time. In my 5+ years at 1and1...I've only called them once for a refund because I screwed up the spelling. They gave it to me. On top of this, every single domain has free privacy for life and they also have autorenew with credit cards. Namecheap does not offer autorenew or free privacy for life. I ended up moving my domains out of Namecheap because I can't deal with the stress of logging in several times a month to "add funds" via Paypal.

I haven't experienced a single negative with 1and1. And I'm paying lower prices than Namecheap and GoDaddy.

The only drawback with 1and1 is the DNS propagation time. It takes around 12 hours to get your domain name redirecting. I can deal with that. If I need a domain really fast, I'll just use GoDaddy and transfer the domain later to 1and1 before it expires.

My real $0.02 cents. 1and1 and GoDaddy works fine with me.

FYI: don't run nefarious or controversial sites with GoDaddy.

Oops...edited my post. I meant to write 1and1. Namecheap is fast, 1and1 is not.

Mine too ... I have over 100 Namecheap domains and over 150 Godaddy domains (had over 300 with them) and propagation has always been very fast. In addition, getting Godaddy customer service on the phone is fast and easy and any situation I've ever had was always resolved immediately, and very politely.

A lot of Godaddy complaints have come from big fees to people holding domains that have been reported to Godaddy as spamming. That's in their TOS so it should come as no surprise to someone using domains to spam, such as massive forum profile backlinks, massive blog comment spam, etc.

The complaints against 1&1 are entirely different and has to do with them not letting domains expire or be transferred without charging the customer for it. I prefer to have complete control over whether or not I renew a domain or transfer it out of a registrar and don't expect that to cost me money or hassle.

Also my first time I read anything good about 1and1. I believe they have more negativity than any other registrar by far.

    http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...c030b17bae363c

One of the most troublesome issues is even if you let your domain expire or sell it you still get billed by 1and1 since the domain is only part of a so called "package" which they bill you for regardless of the domian being in the package, or not. I have also heard if you do not pay the yearly package fee you are sent to a collection agency.

That can likely be avoided if you can also cancel the package at time the domain cancels but most domain owners assume once the domain is gone the package is also cancelled since the domain name was the only thing inside the package. But that is not true with 1and1.

Another oddity is the "package" automatic (required) renewal date does not necessarily correspond with the domain expiration date, which causes more confusion. In addition, last time I checked they very strangely had no Whois lookup service on their site, even for client use, so when working in the control panel you need to go elsewhere to check the whois info and exp dates.

Thanks for all the info, especially Kay and Jesus. Especially being able to pay directly with PayPal and the auto renew parts.

You can pay with PP on namecheap, but it is a little 3 step dance that I've never seen anywhere else that takes PP.

I had no idea people felt so strongly against 1and1.

I would like to point out that I have never used their hosting, nor do I ever intend to.

They have never charged me when not appropriate, and any problems I have had with them ended up being user error.

To sum up: this one customer thinks that $5 is a good deal for a company he has enjoyed doing business with.

I used 1 and 1 before, didn't really care much for them but never actually had any real issues that I can remember. A $5 domain sounds good to me but (sorry Severin) at the moment or at least it supposed to be available til 12/31 go daddy has $1 domains with the coupon code ATTACK. I don't know if you can get more than one and you definitely can't use it more than once. Just thought I would let anyone interested know...

Now there's a $5 vocabulary. I actually think the thread has value just for letting me know about a domain registrar that has a couple of positives I appreciate. I probably wouldn't have seriously considered them otherwise. It is really nice to hear about personal experiences instead of theory.

I don't even have a domain that I want right now so the $4 doesn't even come into it.

I'm not trying to be deliberately obnoxious. (That part comes naturally ) I enjoyed your post too.

      best wishes

I have been lurking on this forum for a while, but I just can't keep silent after the original post. It's understandable that people trying to make money in internet marketing are eager to save few bucks, but please be careful who you are dealing with.

There is very little good to be said about 1and1. I signed up with them in 2006 after I received an offer for hosting with 5 free domains for $10 per month. It sounded tempting, because I had a project to be built with several related domains. After I started using them, it turned out that they had a very different user interface (not Cpanel), which was difficult to use. I tried to install a script, which didn't work there (it worket for all my other sites). I neglected that project, but kept paying the $10 per month.

In 2008 I decided to cancel the 1and1 hosting and move the domains elsewhere. I e-mailed them, there was no reply. I phoned them, there beyond rude and said that I can't cancel the service for the next few months. Fortunately, the credit card they were charging expired in April 2008, so they couldn't charge it anymore. Please note that at the time I had no active sites hosted with them.

The expiration didn't stop them. They started sending me threatening e-mails that I must provide a new credit card and pay $30 reconnection fee. I patiently explained that I don't like and don't need their service, but they kept trying to charge me.

They are really an elaborate scam. They have their own collection agency, located in Montreal (that's for Canadian transactions), although their headquarters are in Pennsylvania. They sent me a letter demanding $30 for the three months after the card was cancelled plus $30 for reconnection fees. Then they started calling me on the phone. As of this writing I have received over 100 phone calls from them.

The first letter prompted me to investigate the company. A search at the Better Business Bureau site showed that they had over 800 complaints from customers regarding billing. I filed a complaint with the BBB and the Pennsylvania AG, but at this point the issue is still pending.

They keep calling me occasionally. If they get my wife, she patiently tries to make them understand the situation. If they get me, they are treated to speech that would be considered obscene in the high society.

Here is the major point, if some poor soul tries to save few bucks and gets caught in such a scam, he or she would keep paying to avoid damaging their credit rating. In my case I have all the credit cards I need (although I don't use them much) and I don't need a mortgage or loans to run my business. However, a person who is just starting can be trapped forever. So please be careful when somebody like the original poster tries to lure you into something you will regret, although you will save 4 bucks in the beginning.

Never join any program or service, which you can't cancel with one click. All hosting and domain registration I use now is under my complete control. You should have the same attitude, no matter how desperate or penniless you are at the moment.

I had to copy and paste peregrinations and still couldn't figure it out for sure but maybe it means a crusade... that's all I got in my search.. wow new word that I will not only not be able to use but I don't really even know for sure what it means... i think I love you.... had to do the 2 words together...

an ancient book of some kind and I definitely need to go back to working and get out of here...
still for some of us $4 at the moment is almost like a paycheck... cool I get to have some milk this week... or a pack of hot dogs

I realize that a lot of people on the wf have infinite opportunities but still do not know how to implement or live in the land of I am confused.... so I know I am a cheapskate? but it is because for me $4 means I get to eat

But I often choose to go without because I do believe I do believe hheheh I actually switch around trying to find the best deal and lately unless gd has a coupon I use domain cheapsters which has also raised their prices..

If I need a domain name (which I really do) I will take the lowest price...:rolleyes: I still love you

Hmmm?...if you use GoDaddy...then stay with GoDaddy.

If you use 1+thumb...then stay with 1+thumb.

But for the love of god....$4!!!!

Some people need to do less chatting on the Forum and more work...How many sales will you need to make to cover the $4 for an ENTIRE year?

      Think about that.

I wasn't gonna get into this thread....but I find the petulant peregrinations within this thread astonishing....so I thought I would say.

I use 1and1.es to maintain some .es domains and I must say that I am not pleased with their services, and I don't use their expensive hosting.

If you already have a domain portfolio it's better to keep all of your domains at the same registrar.

I have used 1and1 for many years for domain registration because of a reasonable price and free private registration. I just registered another domain with them and it will be the last! After about half an hour I went back to point DNS (I don't use their hosting, not CPanel and their control panel is awful) 'domain has been requested'. I contacted support and they tell me they have a new domain registration process which will take 24 to 48 hours before a domain is available!!!!!!!! I'm afraid I've abused them, that is just ridiculous! So yes you can get a cheap domain at 1and1 if you want to wait 2 days!! Don't register with 1and1!!

One reason the domain propagation for 1and1 takes so long is they don't actually register your domain right away.

They initially authorize your credit card and actually charge it sometime later.

So you think you've registered a domain name and someone can come along and register it right under you (it happened to me).

Never had a problem with Namecheap. I like having to look specifically at each domain name and decide whether to renew it or now. Once a month, I sort my domain list by expire date and decide whether to renew the next batch.

Is this true? Could it be the 1and1 staff 'steal' and register the good domains that we have paid and canceled ours instead?
