do you just hop on google images and snag a photo or are there certain copyright restrictions? if so how do you know which photos have been copywritten and which have not

I get mine from Amazon, that way they already have my affiliate link.

Most of the photos in google images are from postings on other peoples blogs and websites. The owners of the images are not pursuing anyone who may "borrow" them.
If it's their business to sell the photos or claim exclusive rights then you could have a problem.
The only question is if the site that is hosting the image has obtained the image illegally or not. If by remote chance someone should complain you'll just have to take it down.

That's a total crap. In plain English you are saying: don't worry, you CAN STEAL anybody's images.

I do watch if idiots are hotlinking to my images and usually replace them with a big hairy ass picture

Once in a while people do get stuck with a big bill for appropriated images, I'm guessing you ant to stay away from found images that are licensed from a major photo house.

There are free stock image libraries out there, they still have some terms of use you have to abide by, though at worse it's a credit line below the image, morguefile.com, picfindr.com, freepixels.com and Stock.XCHNG (sxc.hu) are possibilities, picapp.com serve you relevant licensed images with ads attached. While print resolution photos can be way pricey, you can find web resolution commercial images for under a buck, try 123rf.com.
