When I make a new page it automatically puts a menu on the page. i.e I make a contact page and contact shows up in the menu bar on my site.

My question is, is there a setting in Wordpress dashboard where you can select which pages show up on that menu bar and which don't or is it theme specific setting?

You can use a plugin called page mash. It allows you to hide some of the pages or even to change the order.

Coffee in the mornings is a must! Work sometimes demand that I tweet, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. I Hunt and Shoot Aliens as therapy a few hours every day. I am experimenting with healthy eating, and I enjoy LIFTING apart from tennis, which I have loved from goddess knows when. Apart from Coffee, I love cheeses and wine, as French do.

The easiest plugin to do what you want to do is called Exclude Pages from Navigation

Search under the install plugins tab and it will pop right up. It adds a checkbox on each page, and if you uncheck it then the page won't show up in the menu.

If you use a WP 3.0+ enabled theme that supports Menus, then you can simply create a custom menu and you won't have to worry about any of this.

Can't you do that with WordPress 3.0+, you can make custom menus and put them anywhere?

The theme needs to support menus. Older themes don't.
