There are many ways how to get traffic for your site.

The simplest method that I know is to post quality content that will capture the attention of the visitors. Once you've done this build some links, social bookmarking, article directories, digg, reddit, and you're done.

I think a lot of people always overlook social bookmarking for some strange reason.

Read and search through this forum, especially the free ebooks. Post links everywhere you're allowed to. Create web 2.0 properties, make videos and promote them, write articles and submit them.
Research your keywords wisely, remember not everyone is searching for the same thing the same way, it's important to chose your keywords wisely.

Some other more grunt-working methods would be forum posting, blog commenting, videos, and torrent creation.

Quality content that will capture the attention of your visitors will actually need only a few backlinks and selfpromotion until it spreads.

But of course you will need more than just social bookmarking to get the top rank position.

    This is what I do:

    1. Provide updated and useful content (written, video, audio, graphical and software content as well as products and services) relevant to the needs and problems of my target audience.
    2. Determine where segments of my target audience frequently hangs out on the Internet or even cold contact them in case that's possible (if my target audience = marketing VPs, business development heads, etc. of corporations and companies operating in particular industries).
    3. Contribute updated and useful content in those online places while exposing links pointing to my pages offering supplemental content that provides benefits which cannot be found on those online places nor from my contributed content. I'll also send presentations and demo of my content, products and services if my target audience consists of the people mentioned above.
    4. Contact webmasters of sites where my target audience frequently hangs out, particularly site owners with large mailing lists of people included in my target audience. Offer my content, products and services in exchange for ads and links placed on their sites and newsletters/updates. Also offer affiliate comissions per sale/referral.
    5. Place my products/services in ClickBank as a merchant product so affiliates can market my products/services for me with commissions per sale/referral.
    6. SEO for improving the search engine rankings of my sites and pages for my target keywords. Tackling this would be a lengthy discussion, so I'll leave this for another day.

It is true that content is king, but like kaiser said, only when it makes effective use of keywords.

          Not only the right words, also their correct placement is crucial. Your main keyword needs to be used in the;

          page URL
          page title
within the first ninety characters of the body text
2% to 3% throughout the body

These are always required for every time you build a web page for content.

          Cheers

The fastest way to get traffic is buying it via PPC, there are several options, but the main ones are:

    - Google Adwords.
    - Microsoft Adcentre.

I agree with pata below. If your question is how to get traffic fast, then advertising will always beat all the time consuming SEO. Before people tell me all the virtues of "free" traffic. Let me ask how much time have we spent on getting "free"? I think we under value our time. It is not free.
To save yourself all the headache of building a blog that doesn't make you any money, like we have all done, here is what I recommend:
      - Create a Facebook Page for your niche
      - Put on a fbml tab on your new Page
      - Put your html email capture form on the fbml tab and set as the landing tab
      - Run an ad on Facebook that targets your EXACT prospects to your Page
      - If you are not getting response (and that means you not losing money since no one clicking) you need to rethink this niche. Facebook is the place that is threatening Google, because the way it collects user info. Use that to your advantage before anything else.
      - If it is working, then start a Bing/Yahoo PPC. Then SEO if that is good.
Bottom line is stop wasting time on all the SEO stuff these people are making a fortune selling us courses on. We can tell if something is good first, for a lot less. Do not be scared of paying for a FB ad. You can know if you are on to something for about $10. Better than your hours of work on SEO. Best to you.

Well, for me, one of the best method is to be a guest blogger on similar-topic blog.

Also, commenting and giving value in other similar-topic blogs helps too.

But that's just me, I like to write things that resonate with my targeted readers, so guest blogging would be one of the best method I would say.

    Simply think....

    PAID Traffic

    or

    FREE Traffic

Depending on the type of blog you have
you can analyze the paid and free sources
to see which are most effective.

If you have a direct response sales blog up
have you tested to see if it converts?
You should do that before you hit the
    traffic switch.

You've received some pretty good advice, but I know when I first started in Internet Marketing, reading great traffic generation techniques like the ones above is awesome and exciting. BUT when it comes down to actually taking action and generate some traffic I found myself overwhelmed and confused on where to begin and which one to use first.

So...my honest advice to you, as a newbie (if you are one) is STAY AWAY from paid traffic for now and especially stay away from...Google Adwords!

And instead focus your efforts and time with FREE SIMPLE traffic methods doing:

    1. Forum marketing - if your niche is "internet marketing" then here at the Warrior Forum is where you should be 24/7, 365 days a year! Just be active, positive, and provide value in all your responses and questions. Oddly enough this will get people clicking your signature link, singing up to your opt-in page, and eventually purchasing your product or an affiliate product you promote.

    2. Article marketing - I know, know...everyone is saying it's not working and not effective anymore but truth is it still WORKS and is free.

Just focus on submitting ONE article a day to Ezinearticles.com FIRST, wait for it to be approved, and then submit that same article (with a little rephrasing to avoid having Google think it's duplicate content, which will bring your search engine rankings lower) to goarticles and articlesbase.

    3. Blog commenting - Go on the TOP blogs in your niche and be the FIRST to comment on a blog post, making sure your comment is valuable and contributes to the post.

Just focus on these three for now and master them.

DO NOT underestimate the simplicity of these methods, because from my experience and from many of the most successful marketers today, simple techniques like these when executed bring amazing results.

So, be consistent and persistent in your actions. And DON'T GIVE UP!

Within a couple weeks you should have a decent number of subscribers on your list to market to or sales if you choose to drive your traffic straight to a sales page.

Now stop reading this long thread and go TAKE ACTION!

Like I said, I am amazed at how so many people think that spending hours upon hours of your time on all these below methods make them FREE. You think you can do better SEO than the guys with full time staffs? However, we can all put up a Facebook ad in minutes just like theirs. Time equals value in my world. Value equals success. Success equals freedom. Know what you want before you begin this journey. This forum is littered with people like us who are asking what they did wrong after following all the steps we've been sold. Best to you.
