Has anybody ever used Facebook groups to find new friends/business
associates?

Apparently the best way to do this is to find a group in your niche
area and look for the group administrator. Then send out a friend
request to the administrator.

Always leave a brief message when you send out a friend request,
as this will separate you from everyone else. It seems that hardly
anyone takes the time to do this.

It also makes you look like you know what you are doing and not
amateurish.

Thanks for reading.

Social traffic is becoming more & more important these days, especially in terms of creating 'social proof'. So it certainly is a good idea to have a strategy to use FB, even more so taking into account the amount of traffic it nowadays gets...

What's your goal to get the admin to promote offers for you?

I believe the goal is to get as many productive FB friends as possible. Although FB only allows 5000 friends, you never know, one day one of those group administrators could become a customer, business partner, jv partner. The key is to treat them as you would wanted to be treated.

some admins have millions of friends on their fan pages and you would have to give them something really worthwhile for them to be interested enough to blast an ad to their fans in your behalf

This is wonderful advice. Indeed when it comes to using Facebook and other social media for marketing then it's not enough to have many friends, it's also important that your friends should be relevant to your niche. This also adds to your image as someone professional who knows other professionals.

Facebook groups are great, but I have had much more success with creating Facebook pages.

You can create a "fan" page for any product and you do not have to connect that page to your Facebook profile.

It can be really annoying for your friends and family if you are testing several different things. That means a Facebook page works better, at least for the things that I try to achieve.
