I've been on the fringe for years, and it just doesn't work!

I've been in direct marketing in some form or another since I was old enough to remember. And I'm pretty old!

Anyone remember selling Grit? ( the newspaper). I've been studying direct marketing since the days of newspaper and magazine ads.(mid 60's)

Back in the day, you had to make EVERY WORD pull it's weight. Every freakin' word cost you money and in the better direct marketing magazines a word was $5!

Needless to say you couldn't be casual with your message in that world, anymore than you can with a properly worded tweet in today's world...

So many people have been lead(sp?) to believe that this new "internet marketing" thing is easy. Just put up a blog on a niche you have passion about and "bingo" you're rich!

Sorry Folks, it doesn't work that way.

I'm off the wall, and most of my interests have nothing to do with mainstream marketing.

I'm skinny, in good health, and spend my off hours talking on the radio since I'm an Amateur Radio operator from way back...playing disc golf and drinking beer are my other passsions!

Sure, I could make a niche out of disc golf, but I could care less about which celebrity did what this week. My interests just don't jive with the mainstream.

I made some bucks when gas was $4 a gallon, but people are fickle...the media stirs them to a frenzy and as soon as the 'imagined crisis' is over it's no longer news...well, there goes yours hits.

There's still a blue gazillion gallons of oil floating around in the gulf, poised to do damge for years and years...but, they capped the leak so everything is suddenly good. And what about that war over there in Iraq? Oh yeah, Obama is reducing the troops so....

I'm rambling, but my point is this, pick an ever-green niche that isn't going away, preferably a micro niche that has enough traffic and people with problems. ( Acne would be a good example but it's too competitive, how about irritable bowel syndrone?)

Picking a niche is tough...many have suggested over the years to pick a passion but that just doesn't work! Some of us are just not mainstream and could care less about losing weight, although I have thought about doing a 'how to gain weight ' site.

Back into your niche by seeing what affiliate products are available. Don't just look at Clickbank or Amazon. You can type in google "keyword or niche" + affiliate and you'd be amazed at the affiliate opportunities! (Check out diy build your own chicken coop)

I finally found that success in "internet" marketing, which is just a new word for direct marketing, follows the same rules that Neanderthal or maybe Cro-magnon figured out.

I've got something you need and it's valuable to you, here's what it's 'gonna cost you. Oh, and people have needed this since way back when, but I'll convince you I have the answer (tounge in cheek)

I'd have thought that obscure niches would be easier to monetize than popular ones because there's much less competition.

That, of course, assumes you could create or promote a product that people are prepared to pay for in that niche.

    Cheers,
