This may be a newbie question, but I need help...

How do I create an eBook? What programs do I need? Are there any free ways to create one? Just to see what it looks like, then pay once I'm ready to start.

Use OPenOffice, it is free OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite, write your ebook using the word processor, save as PDF.

You can create a PDF which can be sold as the simplest ebook. Lots of ebook sellers use PDF format (Adobe acrobat software opens it).

You can create a microsoft word document & then convert it into PDF using any online pdf converter. Search in google for PDF converter you will get them for free.

Dont try to complicate your start - just start writing and if you have your ebook written you can sell it as a PDF. There are options of securing it if you place it in a zip file & password protect it.

These are simple ways to do it. You can complicate the process & go for sophistication too if you want.

You can create your Ebook with Open Office its free
With open office you can conv into a PDF file
Once that's done if you want to sell it you'll need a blog or website.
Or you can offer it as a bonus, depends on what you want to do with your Ebook

    Some advices:

    1)Choose your subject/niche

2)Research the market to find out if your subject is wanted.

3)Use the "Word Tracker" tool to find out how many times a month people search and look for such a product or information.

4)After you have choosen your topic and made research, start writing your ebook and use tools like Word or OpenOffice that it is free.
After wrote it convert in PDF (you can find this feature in word and openoffice if i remember well

5)Create an ebook ecover for it.You can use many free software online to create an ecover, look for example this:
101 Ebook Covers and Software Boxes - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
or hire TOP designers to do that, like http://www.minisite911.com/ or http://www.myminisitegraphic.com/ (very cheap!)

6)Then you need to put it in front of potential customers and publish it!
A free way to do this is through social networking sites!

    Hope this helps!
    Good luck!

If you want to give your ebook a more professional look, go to the War Room, there is a member there giving away free ebook templates for your internal pages. I have them and although they are basic they serve their purpose very well.

Alright, thank you all, very speedy answers.

I had OpenOffice installed on my computer, but was not aware that it could create an eBook. I'll get on that right away.

    lol, perfect timing I guess...

One more question, can the eBooks made with OpenOffice be sold? I know for PDF converters it says that trial created eBooks can only be given away.

Not that I was going to sell this one...

Yes, OpenOffice is not trial software, and you definitely own the copyright to any unique content that you create with it.
