Is that 17,000 searches for the word in general or the exact phrase you are targeting? There's a big difference...

I dont know. If I go to google keyword tool it shows 17,000 local (USA searches). I try the key by its self, and with "example" and yet it still shows 17,000. If I go to google (doing so now and type in key), results listed:

About 4,470,000 results (0.25 seconds)

  Yep, like everyone else is saying ... keep workin' at it!
  
  I've noticed quite a bit of difference in visitors from being at the bottom and the top of the first page of certain keywords. You also have to remember that the keyword itself makes a difference.
  
  If you try to think about what the person typing that keyword is thinking, that can give you insight to if it's going to give you results or not. (basically the buyer mindset). If they're looking for info, you may get the clickthrough, but not see any action happen.
  
  On the other hand, the keyword could be super targeted to a certain product and get huge results without a ton of traffic. I tend to go for those kinds of keywords.
  
  Also, your page title and description can make a huge difference on whether people click through to your site from the serps or not too. If you know what they're "really" thinking in their minds, you can pull them in. Then make sure the content on your page matches that line of thought as well.
  
  ...But, you not gonna be able to tinker around with all that until you hit those top spots and pull the visitors. So keep going for the top!

I would of thought you'd proceed until you hit number 1. If it's been fairly easy until now then just keep doing what you've done and see the results.

I dont know who would stop there.

If it's a "buying" keyword with commercial intent (I'm assuming you're trying to sell something on your website, of course), then continue with what you're doing and build additional backlinks to your site to push it higher up on page 1 - you don't want to remain on the bottom, do you?

You can turn a non-buying keyword into a buying keyword if you market it correctly

Go for no. 1 spot!

There's a huge difference in traffic between being on the last spot on page one compared to the first spot. If I remember correctly, you're looking at about 40% of the search volume clicking on result no. 1 and about 5% on result no. 10.

That's 8 times as much traffic (and 8 times as many sales!).

If your content is good, there's no reason why you shouldn't claim first place

Being at number 1 is highly over rated. So are all those buggers that win races they enter. I mean it's so much cooler to breeze in at 9th place to avoid all that attention from the opposite sex, the champagne, the cash prizes...

And while we're at it, why go to Bali when New Jersey is so close? No one really likes umbrella drinks. Not really.

Ford Fiesta's have 4 wheels, why should we bother with a Ferrari?

Pfft, I say stay at the bottom of the page.

The truth is, contrary to what many may think, not EVERYONE clicks on the first Google result. With that said, appearing on the first page of a highly competitive term is nothing to gawk about. It's a great thing when it happens....BUT, if it's within his power to rank higher, I would certainly try to.

You must continue working hard on it. Work your way up to the top and once you're there, you have to continue working on it to stay on top. Most of the time, staying on top is challenging. Just continue what you're doing to stay on top.

Keep on building (unless you're in my niche, of course LOL) - because the competition for the top spots is always ferocious and you've got to assume that the whole world is out to knock you off page 1.
