Is pessimism the new procrastination?

We all know what a negative impact procrastination can have on the success of a would be entrepreneur.

But these days I am seeing pessimism expressed more and more in the market and occasionally by clients.

In some cases it appears to have completely blinded some to the point that they cannot see the answers to their questions or their problems simply because they refuse to open their eyes and look.

The attitude is something like "where is my ____ #$%& you!"

When the answer is "um it's right there on the page you visited" or "its right there in the email you just replied to but did not read."

In some cases its so absurd that you can email the pessimist the answer to their question in 5 different point by point comprehensive explanations but they refuse to read any of them because they simply want to be pessimistic.

It is my pleasure to offer such types a quick refund and help them out the door as fast as possible.

The pessimist is definitely worse off than the procrastinator... because no one wants to be around them so they pretty much screw themselves. Plus they are constantly looking gift horses in the mouth with their eyes shut tight shouting "where's the $%&#@! teeth."

So if you are a pessimist and wonder why all the world is out to get you... or even half the world...

Don't worry. They aren't. They're just trying to avoid attracting your attention.

It's so easy to be pessimistic right now that I think it is the new fad. And you're right, if you see the glass as half empty then it is.... at least to you.

And if you're really pessimistic then sooner or later you're going to spill that glass and then it will be empty.

I actually advocate you approach your daily business affiairs with pessimism. If you know me, you know that I'm a big picture optimist. I am optimistic I'm going to be a millionaire in five years.

I am pessimistic that the dime sale script I set up today will work right, and I'm pessimistic that the last 5 guys who emailed me wanting to promote my products will ever actually do so, I'm pessimistic that anything will ever "go as planned", etc.

I learned this from Dan Kennedy, who calls it "Big picture optimist, small picture pessimist."

It's actually much easier to run your business when you expect things to go wrong day to day. When they do, you're not shocked. You quickly move to an alternate plan, because you're still confident that you're resourceful enough to get the end result.

I would encourage more people to practice this reality-based thinking. I see too many people who expect it to be too easy, only to get shattered when they step out in the real world and it eats them alive.

They always plan around "best case scenario". I like to plan around "worst case scenario".

Well said, it's so easy to be pessimistic in todays climate. And then of course you never even see what's right in front of you. If your own personal income has not changed in this current economy, then your reality is that this is the time to seize the opportunity.

If most people looked at todays economy as the opportunity that it truly is, well, the economy wouldn't be in the trouble that it currently is in.

If you look and act, great deals are everywhere right now, from real estate to retail stores, and everything in between. But unfortunately, they watch and buy the negative news, and then crawl into their shell and avoid taking any action.

It narrows their focus so much that as you pointed out, they can't even see what's clearly in front of them.
