Long Domain Name

Here's the situation: I am finishing up a book today or tomorrow that has a long title, and will be marketing it vigorously. A domain name that has the exact title is available, though not a .com (that one's already taken).

Since people will likely be clicking on a link to go to the website devoted to this book, rather than typing the title into an address bar, will the long domain name be okay, or should I utilize a shorter domain name that has only a vague relation to the book title?

Would love some opinions on this one.

    Hi

    Personally I think the long domain name will not make much diference.
    If the ebook are to be promoted by email recomendation
    with a link on it, people don't need to type the url.

    Just my thoughts

    A domain with the exact title is always best. If the dot com name is not available, maybe the hyphenated name is available with the dot com extension.

        I have considered that, but the problem is that the title of the book very accurately describes the material within it.

        That still merits some thought, though.

          For me, this issue depends on one thing and one thing only: am I worried about losing traffic to the owner of the (unhyphenated) .com?

          If I am, then I'd rename the book as suggested above.

          If I'm not, then I'd either hyphenate or take the .org/.net/.info, none of which affects SEO at all. For me, traffic would be the only issue, really: SEO just isn't relevant, here.

    I don't think it really matters, the only effect of long tail domains I see is direct traffic. And if its something people like they will remember the domain either way.

    I am surprised no one has mentioned this yet...

    Are there any potential copyright/trademark/other intellectual property issues if the .com name is already taken?

    More often than not, if the .com of a name I want is taken, I won't even look at other TLD's just to be safe...

    It's a potential hassle I don't need, and I doubt you need it either...

      Thanks to everyone for their input. I decided to go the hyphenated route, primarily so I could get the .com (which is absolutely meaningless, I know)

      Of course part of my decision making process was that I was able to use a .99 coupon code with GoDaddy for a .com registration.

      So far as copyright or trademark issues are concerned, there is very little chance that this could be an issue. It isn't as though my book were titled, My Life Working for McDonald's and How I Survived.

        It's not even that - some people like to think that if they own the .com, they have some kind of entitlement to the name. (Which may be right to a certain degree in some cases)

        Then, there are people who just like to try and extort a small sum of money from you, even if they are wrong...

          I assume you're referring to CreateSpace. The book I'm writing after this one (it's half-way completed) will be published through Amazon. I'm really looking forward to that experience.

    if your book title is memorable etc then i don't think it matters how long the domain is to promote it -- provided it's not like 20 words or something like that

    I think I'd still wonder if people would visit the unhyphenated version or not. Probably not a big deal at all ... but I'd probably always wonder.

    If it were me, I would probably go for a shorter URL ... but then again, one of my better performing sites has a really long URL. I'm still surprised all those old ladies that visit it type it in. haha

    To me what matters more about a book is not how well it is written or how good it
    is,whatsoever.Just find the right and targeted audience to get it.Why am I saying
    this?
    Use the long URL,and you can then shorten it by using Tinyurl.com to cloak it.
