Comparing Sites on Alexa Ranking

I Think that I have found out that after comparing my site about dog grooming it has a better Alexa ranking than my site for general guides, because of the searches and competition on the keywords that I use on both sites and also the demand of the niche. Also my dog grooming site it has keywords on the content and the other does not, but they both have optimization on the domain and metas. I think that adding keywords in content can help in the optimization and of course ranking.
I wonder what it will be ranking comparing if a site has good optimization but no backlinks vs no optimization with backlinks. I seem sites with a lot of backlinks but poor ranking and sites with a few backlinks but high ranking, I think it is because of the content. Any experiences will be very appreciate.

Alexa is a fun tool to play around with in terms of advertising sales but that about it. They based a large portion of their ranking off the viewers using the alexa toolbar, so its not really accurate at all.

    Have you looked at SemRush?

I would be very careful when using Alexa to rank sites against each other. Like the other user said, they collect much of their data from their tool bar. I would also use sites like compete.com and Google Trends (if big enough).

Its so easy to manipulate Alexa... just put an "Alexa" widget on your site/blog.. and the alexa rating will go down (down=better).

I still check my alexa# once in a blue.. but just for fun. I never really took it seriously.
