Wordpress Beginner questions

Hi to all Forumers,
Recently i created a blog in WordPress wanting to do some affiliates marketing on it, but according to the TOS of WP, it wasn't allowed to include any affiliates links in it,

Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes ("Make six figures from home!!", "20 easy steps to top profits!!", etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category.

Not asking to be scold, but i wanted to ask, is there really no way to promote affiliates products on WP? is the only other alternatives for promoting would be Blogspot??
Now my main concern is im not sure whether i will be successful doing all this affiliatings, so i do not dare to venture into getting own domain name and website so im trying into blogging first.
Or is there any suggestions? Other than Blogspot and WP...

Wordpress.com does restrict you - a general blog there can have links in the sidebar to your own web site or sites of general interest, but they can be quick to shut down a blog which promotes stuff.

Squidoo is one place where you can build a "lens", eg a minisite, and promote affiliate links.

Hmm so is Squidoo better or blogspot? In term of listing in search engine?

Blogspot (or Blogger) is better if you want to create a niche blog with multiple posts. With Squidoo you can create as many lenses as you like but they are all separate.

As far as SEO goes, I'm not sure which is better.

It's better for you to install Wordpress on your own web server. That way, nobody will stop you from doing affiliate marketing.

Good point. When you are in total control you call the shots. I promote Amazon products on my site and then use a wordpress blog to link to the articles on my site, so I use it for back linking purposes without putting affiliate links directly on the wordpress blog. So far that seems to work so far.

load wordpress on your own server. Pick a good domain with your keyword in it, and market away.

Goggle loves wordpress for SEO and it is super easy to use. Keeping it on wordpress, blogspot, or any other web 2.0 platform doesnt give you any SEO juice for yourself.

Hope that helps feel free to contact me for more..

You definitely need to host your own WP blog. WP.com will limit your online experience. I guess you can start with blogspot just to get the hang of things but I suggest do some a little bit more research and start on WP blog. You can do affiliate marketing on blogspot but you won't have as much flexibility as if you were hosting your own WP blog. Wordpress is really easy to use and the good part about it you have a ton of plugins to help you on your way. It's like an app on an iphone. Makes everything that much easier. I say you start now and get things going...

That's a risk you should take, if you are thinking about building a business.
If you are only at the hobby level - you can experiment with all the free options.

Nobody can (or was) sure whether they would be successful because there is no guarantee. However, you need to trust yourself - and work your butt off - if you really mean to enter this business!

No funds for domain and hosting? Do a few gigs on fiverr and buy a domain and hosting.

In another business I was taught the best day to start it is TODAY!
If you wait until "everything is ready for you"... you will not do anything ever.

Free domains are great for affiliate promoting. In fact I use a free co.cc domain. As long as it's not for a business your good to use them. I also have free hosting.

Since when "affiliate promoting" is not "business"? Just asking...

Promoting anything - is your OWN business. You are in the affiliate business.

Yes, it is the best solution.

No, don't get it from hostgator. Hostgator is a great company for hosting.

You should get your domain from a registrar (like namecheap.com) - and never have the same company as your registrar and your host in the same time! It's not healthy for your business

Sorry but what do you mean by not healthy for my business if i register domain names and hosting under same company?

They can hold you "hostage" - there were posts around about similar situations.

Let's say you want to move to another hosting company but they will not let you keep keep the domain, unless you stay with them.

Ever heard of the saying: don't put all your eggs in one basket?

I'm with you...plus it's just gives you a little more control to learn how to change your own nameserver settings.

When I first started out I made this mistake and it took a ton of support tickets just to change hosting providers....then a ton more to get the domain unlocked to I could move it to godaddy (where I find the name server controls pretty easy to understand)

      Hi Horvath,

I think this usually happens with small companies. As per my experience, I never faced any such thing and was able to move hostings or domains freely.
