My poor sales for Christmas indicate autoblogging is dead?

by mmixon
35 replies
I have been working on autoblogs for the last 6 months or so, hoping for a big Christmas payday, but now 3 weeks into the selling season, it is apparent that my big payday is not going to happen. I have read several threads that autoblogging is dead, and I tend to agree with them.

So...my question is, What do I do with my autoblog websites? Do I:

1. convert them to review websites?
2. convert them to estores selling multiple products or even mini-sites?
3. treat them like "leisure suits" and let them sit on the online closet until autoblogs come back in style :-)
4 or what...

I know that whatever I do I will still need to promote and generate traffic to the websites, that is not the issue. It is just that I have these aged and product specific domains with wp already installed that are already paid for that I can recycle. I just don't know which way to go.

To me, the Warrior Forum has always been better than any ebook or program purchased from one of the so-called gurus, as far as great posts go, so could you give me your best advice please?

I want to hit the road running on January 2, 2011!

Thanks in advance,

Mickey

I think the only thing this proves is that your autoblogging websites failed to make money.

Where is your traffic coming from? Is your traffic well-targeted? How well is your sites optimized for converting vistors into buyers?

I think any decisions made without first analyzing the appropriate answers to these questions is a stab in the dark.

Get educated, then make a decision on what you should do going forward.

Exactly! Don't jump into something else until you understand completely what went wrong with these sites. As the Philosopher says, "the unexamined life is not worth living." That goes double for IM.

I have plenty of "real" readers reading my my auto blogs and have received several comments from them thanking me for the "real" content and "real" convenience I have provided them by bringing related quality content from severeal different sources together in one location.

I don't hate auto blogging, just most autoblogs. There's a huge qualitative difference between "bringing related quality content from severeal different sources together in one location" and the "throw enough crap at the wall and some of it might stick" sites so common that they tend to be what people think of when you say 'autoblog'...

I completely agree John....I don't like those sites either and in most cases (IMO) those sites don't last long because they aren't providing value to the reader.

Unfortunately most people (as you say yourself) tend to think of autoblogging in this sense. That may have been the case at one time for the majority of auto blogs out there but I think those days are coming to an end...slowly but surely. At least I hope they are.

I know people who have lost lots of sites and blamed auto blogging in general. When I talked to them about their sites, how they were built, typoes of content...etc, what they told me led me to believe they were essentially building crap sites like those you mention not liking.

Autoblogging is just like anyother IM approach out there. Approach it ethically, treat it right, respect it and what it has to offer to your readers and in the end it can take care of you but it does require work, testing...etc....just like any other IM method.

Perhaps the products that you are promoting just aren't popular this year. I sold loads of a type of toy last year but sales for them have been much slower this year, but other types of toy are selling well.

I don't think autoblogging is dead, its just harder. You've only proved what you are doing has not work and need to figure out why.

I don't do autoblogging as it obviously, in 99% of cases, offers little value to the end user over the original content and lacks any real USPs - so it is destined to fail at some point and it seems a waste of time to me to invest in a business model that is weak from the start, and all the easy money was made about 5 years ago.

Those that are making money from autoblogging have either...
    - Managed to stay ahead of the game and found new strategies that are rarely known by anyone else, and are continuing to come out with a fine tuned system that is ahead of the curve, and have probably invested years and a lot of money in doing this.

    - Produced thousands upon thousands of autoblogs and some of them have hit and/or some are getting just enough to do well.

    - Figured out a way to add value in a unique way giving them a competitive advantage, such as Zimbio, or those various comparison sites that utilize third party content in a unique way.

You say "aged", but you have been working on it for 6 months or so. Well, 6 months is not aged. 2 to 5 years is aged.

Autoblogging did work for a short time about 6 years ago. That was followed by about 2 years where autoblogging software was selling like hot cakes.

It does not work and it will not work in the future.

You can try to sell the sites on flippa. There are many sites like that being sold for about $50 to $100. Only problem: You now know that they do not work and will never make money. Once you know that it is tough to sell them.

You could rebuild them as review sites. Only problem: Google hates autoblogs. Once they find one, they label it as spam. I have yet to see any spam site that was successfully recovered and I am working online since 1999.

That leaves the only viable option: trash them and start to build real sites with real content for real visitors.

I don't know how many times I have heard people say things like this only to find out in the end that they were wrong.

I'm sorry but just because it didn't work for you or others you know doesn't mean that it doesn't work at all or can't work...or as you state...work in the future. You shouldnt be so quick to judge IM methods simply based on your own experience with them. I know several people who are successful with auto blogging or forms of it (myself included) so I simply can't and wont believe it when people say things like this.

I've never had a lot of luck with CPA but does that mean it simply doesnt work, can't work and wont work in the future? I don't think so, not even close...what it really means is that I personally haven't figured out how to make it work for me. Just liek auto blogging, there are too many people who have success with CPA to blindly state that it doesn't work.

Only problem: Google hates autoblogs. Once they find one, they label it as spam.
This simply isn't true...not even close! Given this example then sites liek Google News would be considered spam...sorry, but you are way off here and simply wrong!

You could try flipping them or targeting better keywords with your autoblog and some backlinks.

My advice is to not stop, autoblog is not death, it just changed the way of doing it and now you have the task of cracking the code of doing it on a different way .

But keep doing it until you crack the code.

Autoblogging has had its ups and downs. Now that it has become a consumer commodity, you will have to do something different to get people to buy from your link.

Dumping stuff onto your site from an XML file is not a new strategy. And it used to be that some people could make pretty good money from doing that. the issue IMO, is that if you are doing the saeme thing as everybody else, what is it about your site that is going to make people be loyal to you.

I set up an autoblogging site today, a big one. Actually I set up enough posts to last for over 3 years. And now that that part is done I can concentrate on getting my site ranked with different keyword phrases. Autoblogging really only saves you time is setting up your content.

If you combine that autoposted content with real written posts and then use some of the "spreading the conversation around" tools you can probably make something over the long run.

to my knowedge Google hasnt figured them out yet and even if they do I dont think that is really an issue. I personally dont have any issues with Google not liking something I do with my blogs. Do I have to work hard with SEO...yes...but who doesnt? Do I have to work harder than those that dont auto blog...not sure to be honest. I have regular sites that are easier to rank for and some that arent...i think there are so many variable here that its almost impossible to nail it down to one thing or another.

but it is possible to pull in some valuable content which the reader will appreciate from several different sources and have that information in one place and from which people can benefit.
Very true! I pull content from up to 7 differnet sources and since I am sure to reivew it for relavancy and quality before it posts then I never have a problem with this and as I said before...I've gotten several replies from readers thanking me. In some cases, depending on what software/plugin your useing I would say that makes it harder to pull good content together...but it really does depend on the abilities of the software being used and the few minutes it takes to review it before posting it. Not all systems allow for this, some do...some dont.

by the same token may article sites are populated with inane, nonsensical "spun" drivel which has been submitted hundreds of times and provides even less value in my opinion.
This is why you need to take a few minutes to review it before posting...this solves that issue immediately.

I believe it is possible to deliver quality content on an autoblog as long as it is done intelligently.

I have been in touch with several autoblogging earners lately, and I don't think autoblogging is even remotely dead. I think autoblogging is like any other business: if you don't manage it properly, it won't work. Similarly, if you do, it will.

I'm still researching how to manage it properly, so I can't be of much help there. But whatever model you choose, make sure it's something you understand how to manage productively. It sounds to me like you chased after something without really understanding how to make your goals happen, and I've certainly been guilty of that myself... but in general, it's something you want to avoid.

I've heard it mentioned a time or two...

Seriously, the problem with using Google, and the main advantage to subject specific aggregated (and human reviewed) content sites, is that with the former I have to wade through all the auto-generated, spun slop sites Google hasn't figured out how to filter yet. With the latter, someone has already done the work for me.

If anybody thinks he is are smarter than Google... well you'll soon find out that you were not.

Anything that spams the search engines will bring you into trouble eventually.

Just step into Google's shoes for a minute: Imagine you have build a nice index and somebody tries to game the system. How many engineers and programmers would you hire if you have billions to burn?

You would not believe how smart Google is. Even one wrong plugin can make all the traffic cease. You enable one plugin and within minutes your traffic from Google ceases.

Ask yourself: If I would tell Google EXACTLY what I do, would they be happy or not?

Your web site is an open book for Google.

Yes, you can build an autoblog. Yes, you will get traffic for a few weeks and you will make a few dollars. And yes, if you have 1,000 autoblogs, you will make some money initially.

But you will inevitably hit the point where you won't make any more money and suddenly all traffic, not just the traffic from Google, but from the others, like Bing and Yahoo will cease too.

And then you wake up and want to build a real web site - but you will not get any traffic to that either.

What happened? Well you fell into a large black whole.

How to get out? Well you would have to change your complete identity. New computer, new internet connection, new email, new phone, new friends, news address.

Because if only the slightest trace of your earlier autoblogging career is visible, your new identity is ruined too.

    Is it worth that hassle?

I think your time is more valuable than $50 per month for setting all this up plus all the money you spend on the autoblogging software.

There are many ways to make money. Anything that sounds like little work and high reward will attract a lot of attention. In the end only the guys who sold the shovels (in this case the autoblogging software) are going to laugh all the way to the bank.

      This is good advice.

Most successful autobloggers would happily tell Google exactly what they do, and Google would smile and nod and say "great job."

Most unsuccessful autobloggers would likely face criminal charges if they explained what they do out loud, to Google or anyone else.

The average person is dishonest, selfish, and vindictive. They don't care what's right, so long as they profit and others suffer. And it's a long, hard road they travel before figuring out there's no pot of gold or land of Oz at the end.

Dude, this post is so full of holes and BS I barely know where to begin. Don't worry though...I said barely. Let me take a shot here....

If you're referring to auto blogging as spamming then all I can say to that is no matter what anyone tells you about it you will most likely feel the same way so it's almost not worth my trying to explain the difference. The only thing that makes it worth it is to try to better inform those that you have misinformed with your auto blogg hating ways...

Auto blogging (if done correctly) isn't spam...period! Can it be spam...yeah of course, can any other form of IM be used to spam...certainly! Just because something can be used in a way that could be considered as spam doesn't mean it is always used that way or automatically becomes that simply by it being implimented.

Imagine you have build a nice index and somebody tries to game the system. Even one wrong plugin can make all the traffic cease. You enable one plugin and within minutes your traffic from Google ceases.
This is basically total BS! First your referring to auto blogging as "gaming the system"...honestly, this isn't even worth addressing because it's so far out of the reality of the situation. As far as losing all of your traffic because of using the "wrong" plugin is concerned you might be partially right...but only partially. Using the "wrong plugin" can cause issues. However, the key phrase here is "wrong plugins"...I dont rely totally on plugins and many others I know who are successful in auto blogging dont either. I also know those that are honest with it, approach it legally and ethically wouldn't use those plugins that do cause issues.

Ask yourself: If I would tell Google EXACTLY what I do, would they be happy or not?

Your web site is an open book for Google.
I gladly tell the search engines what I do, how I build my sites and what content fills their pages....I've never had any problesm from any of them. Then again, I approach it differently than those that have somethng to hide.

Yes, you can build an autoblog. Yes, you will get traffic for a few weeks and you will make a few dollars. And yes, if you have 1,000 autoblogs, you will make some money initially.

You had me with the fist scentence...after that you completely lost me. I think that's because everything else you wrote is total crap. You might be able to sell that line of used car salesman BS to newbies but you won't get that by me or anyone else who is familiar and successful with autoblogging.

Thanks...but no thanks, I will listen when you actually have something of value to add to this conversation instead of just your own misguided opinions.

And then you wake up and want to build a real web site - but you will not get any traffic to that either.
      I know how this feels....

I wake up almost everyday and after I've had my morning MT Dew (dont drink coffee) I spend the next couple of hours researching niches, categories within the niche, keywords and phrases, the competitions strength, related products, related content, types of monetization...etc etc and then when I am all done guess what I do...

I build a quality semi auto blog that does offer value to its readers, that the search engines rank well and in the long run will make me steady money for many years to come.

If thats not a "real web site" in terms of IM then I'm not sure what is!

Because if only the slightest trace of your earlier autoblogging career is visible, your new identity is ruined too.
This is way beyond BS...it's so out there in left field I dont even know where to begin. All I can say to this is you seriously need to go to auto blog hater rehab....you need help man!

In the end only the guys who sold the shovels (in this case the autoblogging software) are going to laugh all the way to the bank.
Well, selling the software can be profitable if the software you're selling is quality software and does what it says it will do....otherwise you will end up with a high refund rate and that will kill your profits, not to mention your reputation (which is much more important).

I was initially one of the guys who bought the crap software but as time went on and I learned the proper way (at least for me) to auto blog and I learned what it really took to get it done then it all started to fall into place and then it wasnt just the software guys who "laughed all the way to the bank".

You should know that I (along with others I know) have had auto blogs (or variations of what is typically referred to as auto blogs) running for years and I've never had a problem with any of hte search engines. I don't try to hide anything and ensure the content that posts to my sites is high quality. In the end, my sites provide good value to the reader and grow as time goes by which is evident by my ever increasing traffic volumes each month. They also continue to make me a pretty decent sum of money each month so when you say they are nothing but spam and that it cant work now or in the future...all I can say to that is...sorry it didnt work for you but thats probably because you did something wrong! It works just fine for me and many others I know.

It's the typical "I don't understand autoblogging" post.

For every autoblogger doing it right, there are a hundred doing it wrong, and a thousand doing it backwards.

Grab one at random, and what do the odds say you've got?

It's not your fault that people don't understand autoblogging. It's those thousand people doing it backwards and the hundred doing it wrong. You don't have to feel responsible for correcting those people's stupidity or demolishing the public misconceptions they've created.

Most ignorance is willful, and if anyone really wants to know the truth, you've ensured they know who can give it to them.

I wonder if the people who said autoblogging is dead ever wrote an article and submitted it to Ezinearticles...which is, from my understanding, the best way to get your content syndicated to hundreds of websites...(which many of them could be autoblogs)

If so, then they have potentially contributed to the very thing they hate!

In any event, autoblogging isn't my business model. But I imagine, like all business models, if done right, it is to the benefit of the reader first and foremost and still worth doing.

After reading the responses from Rsberg and a few others on other threads about this subject, I think I finally came up with an analogy that helps understand what they're talking about.

Back in Nebraska, I used to help teach the state-required gun safety course kids needed to get a hunting license. One topic that always came up was "automatic weapons."

Kids would always ask if automatic weapons were legal to hunt with, since the government was trying so hard to ban them. (This was during the years just after the Columbine tragedy.)

We would explain the difference between a fully automatic weapon and a semi-automatic one. With the fully automatic guns, if you held the trigger down, they would fire until the magazine was empty. With the semi-automatic (more properly called an 'auto-loader'), when you pressed the trigger, one round would fire and the waste gas would be used to work the action and load another round. Which would wait patiently for another press of the trigger.

The crappy autoblogs that raise such animosity from people are like automatic weapons that also automatically refill the magazine, only with no reliable means of ensuring the new ammunition is the right caliber.

Aggregate content sites are more like the auto-loaders which will continue to pull in new ammunition, but require a human to validate the fit and pull the trigger.

Of course, neither variation (of gun or blog) is worth much if you can't hit what you aim at...

This is very true....although it isn't the guns (or in this case the autoblogs) fault if the target isn't hit.

That responsibility lies with the shooter and the techniques he/she employs when handling the gun.

That is actually a really good analogy.

Autoblogs are a lot like automatic guns. When you really come down to it, every gun is on some level automatic. Unless, of course, you're into black powder weaponry... which most sane people agree is not what we really think of when we think about guns.

And when you say a gun is "automatic," there is not a single intelligent person on the planet who thinks you can just load it and throw it on the ground, and then it will gallop around town shooting people all willy-nilly.

But that's what people think "autoblog" means. They think you just configure it and throw it up on the internet, and it goes racing off around the internet stealing content and turning it into money.

Which, when you really stop and consider it, is a pretty stupid thing to think.

part of me wonders when these daily debates are going become tiresome to the same participants (yet here I am) - either that or people learn to use the search function for the forum before starting these identical threads everyday.

Again, biggest mistake many people make is putting too much emphasis on the word "AUTO" - ie - it's "easy", it's "bad", it's "copying", it's "illegal". None of those are true - for those that are doing it right. Not even close.

    Hi all

I still have not gotten my 1st website up and running, and have only earned $1.50 from a CPA offer I did a few weeks ago. I do consider having autoblogs as part of my "business plan" for the few months to come. BUT I will personally do quality control (QC) to ensure the articles are not crap, and to make some editing and paraphrasing some of the paragraphs to give them the meaning I want my readers to read.

Personally I have come across a few autoblogs and just by having a quick read I know for sure they are autoblogs because most of the posts do not have any/much meaning in them and some are even out of the topic being discussed in the blog! I certainly do not like this crap because if people come to the site they might get turned off and leave even without having a 2nd read.

What is true will stay true - that is, if we want traffic and conversions, we have to give value to our readers so that it will entice them to come back to our site over and over again to grab the latest info that we have (not considering list building here).

Just my 2 cents as a newbie in IM with a 2 month learning experience so far.

    Cheers,
    Lester

Look at what people are saying about autoblogs:

Autoblogs – What Are They Worth? | Flippa Blog | Buy & Sell Websites

I was almost cold dead after reading the views of people that should know better.

Maybe you may re-consider autoblogs after reading them.

    I'm glad I don't have any.

It's always interesting to me to see the "auto" haters come out of the wood work every chance they get...

I read the page at the link you provided and even though you are attempting to put down autoblogging with the way you phrased your followup after the link I just dont see any real info on that page that makes it look bad.

A simple breakdown of the page reads something like this:

      1. Article intro -Brief explanation as to what autoblogging is and how it is accomplished
      2. Viewpoints of autoblogs and their "worth" - Just like anyother form of IM (or business for that matter) there are always going to be people who see it from both sides...those who like and those who dont. This particluar article doesnt seem to take one side or another...instead it presents "arguements" from both sides so the reader can decide for themselves.
      3. Finally, Flippas position on selling autoblogs - Once again, they aren't trashing them they are simply saying that buyers should know what they are buying and do their due dilligence before buying....unique content site or otherwise (in this case, autoblogs).

      1. That link is to a page on Flippa. Flippa is a webiste dedicated to flipping/selling websites. We all know that most websites will sell for more with unique content on them and to be quite honest most auto bloggers arent interested in selling them although this can be done (and I have done it myself...for more than it cost in time and money to build).

      2. Sorry...but I dont see what made you "cold dead" when reading the views. Was it because most of the views actually supported autoblogging in one way or another and since you don't (which is why you made this post to begin with) you couldn't believe your eyes?

      Seriously...

If you don't agree with, like or have not had success with one form or another of IM then thats your choice/experience and you're welcome to voice that, but when you do a "drive by" on threads about that form of IM without adding any real value to the topic of the thread except to state your opinion without any real evidence to support it then all you are actually doing is trash talking about it. Especially when you attempt to trash it with a link to something you view as trashing it when in reality it isn't doing that at all...

Next time you post a link trying to trash something maybe you should make sure that link is actually trashing it before you post it.

Or better yet....if you can't add something of value to the discussion then just dont post at all.

BTW...there are 101 comments at that link (below the article) and less than 10 are from people with your same viewpoint who can't seem to find what most others atleast see to some degree or another (even if they don't agree with it)...the value and possibilities that autoblogging can offer if it's done right. Maybe someday you will be able to see that, but I doubt it.

To be success at Auto Blog, you need master couple things:

    1. Conversion
    2. Traffic

like everyone other so called Unique Sites....

You still have to take time, study layout
    of your website,

where to put "but it now" buttom

    Subscribe to my list..

    Buy From Amazon Buttom

Get a book on web content conversion...

Or Study how amazon place their ad and buttoms and reviews...

    Then develop template that converts...

    to please google

just mix match up your content type, articles, CJ, amazon, youtube

AutoBlog save you time, to posting article everyday..

but it put lots work on SEO...back links...

    both onsite and offsite...

Make sure your have pretty good Web hosting,
    don't over load your sever....

Focus on find profit keyword phase, and back link
building (even this can be automated by plugins

you should be make some awesome income in christmas

I just broke my sales record this month, with all
    auto blog in..

just got to figure things out...

Treat it as if it's a unique site, except you
automate the content part, the rest
    you still have to do..

    Good Luck!
