Am I paranoid or can people see your domain availability searches?

Over the past month I've been looking for a bunch of available domain names lately just to see what's available. I wrote a bunch of the available ones down just to keep in mind, because I wasn't sure if I wanted them or not. I'm new and don't have a lot of spare money to buy "potential" domains that I might not use, so I didn't register them right away.

Now today I'm checking through some of those, and a lot of them are now registered. Out of about 10 that I rechecked, 4 are now taken, and were registered right around the time I was looking them up, too. Maybe a few days after the search. I find that to be way too much to be a coincidence. These weren't gibberish ones, either. They were all potentially decent, I think.

I've been using GoDaddy to search.

Is it possible that someone/people can see domain searches? This is really bothering me now.

You are not paranoid. Never, ever search for a name unless you are prepared to buy it right now. Godaddy is bad for snatching up searched names.

GoDaddy farms information and 90% of the time will buy whatever you have searched a month later, then offer to sell it to you. Either use a smaller domain checker or use something like Domain Samurai or MNF. This won't make you immune, but it'll help.

I usually go to DomainTools.com and check. They have a monitoring tool for registered users and i monitor some sites to see if they are available. They email me when a domain name i have been monitoring changes status (available to registered or the other way around, or if a domain that was already registered pays for another year).

Well, Godaddy is a larger company. They have probably hundreds of staff.

I do not think that Godaddy as a company snatches up searched names, but I would not bet my house on some of the support staff.

Anyhow, when I do domain research, I usually register the names that I deem interesting right away. Even if nobody physically sees what you are searching, somebody else might just get the idea (Many inventions were done almost at the same time by different people).

Ugh. I had no idea about this. I'm really kicking myself now for not registering some of them... example, an 10,000 search/month exact match domain. Gee, wonder who registered it? GoDaddy.

Why did I not register it? I don't know. I don't even want to look at the rest of the domains I wrote down now. This really sucks, and since I'm not making a lot of money yet I can't really justify scooping up every domain that seems like it might be good. I'd have spent like $200 by now.

Can anyone recommend a safe domain checker? Can I assume that the domain checker on Internic | Whois is safe? How do ScrapeBox/MS check domain availability?

I have never had a domain purchased through them after I checked it.

      Don't kick yourself!

You are taking action by doing the research, and that is the important part.

The list of possible exact match domains is limitless, and as new model numbers and products are developed (every day), new domains will pop up as available.

But I will re-iterate; don't beat yourself up, you want to attach positive thoughts to your IM efforts, not negative ones.

GoDaddy snatching them up just proves you are on the right track!

What an educational thread. I had already figured out GoDaddy were kinda jerks because of all the ridiculous upsells. I'm all for a good upsell but they just really take advantage of the newbies. I'm currently moving all my GoDaddy domains (from when I was a newbie) to NameCheap who I really like. Great support and no BS.

I have a domain buying budget so much $ per month. As my income grows so will that budget. I also like DomainSamurai and DomainFace for research.

I use Whois.com to search but I buy at namecheap.com. I have had similar issues but just to be safe and just in case I just use whois.com. I have tested that theory several times but I find it hard not to snatch a good domain when available.

I have also seen where a domain shows available to you then it really isnt available. It is a flaw or something. Who knows.

This is called "domain sampling" and hasn't happened to me since I stopped searching at GoDaddy.

But it's worth being ready to buy what you're searching for, and make a quick decision, if its available, anyway.

Domain Sampling or Domain Tasting, they're the same BS that Godaddy staffs use to snatch good domains. I agree with the comment mentioned about that you should never check the availability of the domain unless you're ready to register at that moment. Remember, if you've already research the domain and you think it's got very good potential don't hesitate to register it right away if its available. So many available domains were snatched from me within a day or two checking it at Godaddy. But I've learned my lesson and I will not make the same mistakes again.

Wait a week or 10 days and the domain will probably be available again. As Alexa said, it's domain sampling. Third party software temporary registering domains people look for.

Very common - it's a pain but nameboy.com mentioned above allows you to search without running into the problem. Once you find what you want you can go to your registrar and get the domain while you are there.

GoDaddy is easily the shadiest company on the web. A former employee said they intentionally make the site's navigation impossible, so you'll be forced to call their tech support, who would then try to sell you as much as they can.

Damn their $1 domain coupons (and the monthly charge they try to shimmy in with it).

Its very true. It happened to me too with Godaddy. I purchased a large amount of domains in one go. A few of them had parked pages with godaddy adverts even though I had changed the name servers in the control panel and a who is enquiry gave godaddy as the registered owners. I called up to find out what was going on. And they then 'released' them to me. This has occured on many occasions and godaddy is where I buy all my domains from mainly because the interface is easy to use and I use the coupons like fun3 that bring down the price a lot.

In closing, yes godaddy definitely are domain snipers. If you think its good. Register it ;-)

Also it's amazing the things that godaddy charge for which are actually free most other places. I buy names with godaddy, just because all my prev domains are there (keeps things tidy) and host at hostgator. They even charge you for email addresses! For someone who doesn't know like my mum went ahead and purchased a whole bunch of stuff like trailblazer for traffic ect. It was a joke. I've heard of upsells but 5-6 pages of offers before checkout and then some after! That is overkill, but hey it makes them money, so they aren't likely to stop anytime soon right.

I think when domain registrars engage in "domain sampling", the period of registration rarely amounts to a "full-term" (i.e. a minimum of one year).

It is essentially a very short-term, temporary registration; the domain should appear back on the "open market", available to be registered once again, shortly afterwards. It could still take a few days for that to happen though, and just because it does happen, it doesn't in any way negate the fact that it's an irritant to prospective customers, and a downright shady practise.

Not every domain registrar does this, though - thank God. So if you're concerned about it, just stay away from those who are renowned for doing so. GoDaddy is one of them (but frankly, in my opinion, there are more than enough other reasons to avoid them anyway, beyond this one).

I haven't even heard of any "GoDaddy Google gadget", but I suspect the answer would likely be "no". If it's interfacing with them, you'd perhaps expect their backend system will still "flag" and "snap up" any domains that tickle its fancy.

As DireStraits mentioned, there is a process called domain sniping. When most of the big companies do it, the domain is only registered on a refundable basis, and the refund must be requested within a week (or is it 5 days?)

What happens with a lot of those is that they find out it does not get enough type in traffic to be worthwhile. Just check the domain in a few more days and there is a good chance it will now be available.

If that doesn't work, it's time to get out and buy a gun... (I'm not serious for anyone that is wondering.)

You aren’t paranoid at all its happened to me and several other people on a few different occasions. As others have said if you think the name has potential snatch it up immediately, if you can’t purchase it right away wait until you can before even running a search on it. One good method is to do a search on the domain via search engines and if nothing is found on it its probably available. Some sites also list recently registered domain names and it might appear on some of those list if taken. I have had names stolen that would have been of little value to anyone other than me or someone selling the same or similar products in my local area a little more than a coincidence.

There is something else you need to consider when looking for names. Verisign and other registrars will automatically place a lock on a domain name you search for, for, I think, up to one week. Some will buy the domain name, or report a list of domain names searched for.

I have never seen GoDaddy register one of the names I looked for, but then, I generally use their bulk search and screen out 50+ names at the time.

I often search through eNom, and I have never experienced a lock on the names checked with them. I sometimes place it in my wish list and go back later and buy. Sometimes the same day, sometimes a few days later, and sometimes much later. Still, I have never lost a name because I searched for it with eNom.

I quit using Verisign because when I would search for a name, it would be available, but when I went to buy later, it was for sale at a higher price.

Go Daddy is most definitely evil. They most definitely do in fact register domains from abandoned shopping carts. (I have seen it happen myself). Either they do it directly, indirectly, or they have failed for 10 years now to build or maintain any security or privacy measures, in which case its the same as them doing it intentionally.

I never ever check domain availability using any registrar service. Further, I never use any service that expect that I'm checking availability.

I usually use my own scripts based on DNS resolution for my screening, then follow up with a WHOIS as a second check (often burying the one I care about in a batch of stuff I don't care about), and then finally, they will be rechecked by the registrar when I try to register them.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has happened to me too.. Infact, I am faced with a bigger problem than most - not only did my domain searches vanish before I had the chance to register them....

My PR1 sites that I stupidly didn't renew are gone to someone with parked adverts -AND I don't know how to get back the content! !!!

It happened to my brother a few years ago as well when he did a search through GoDaddy first looking to variations of his business name. It was not something anybody else would have grabbed for any reason.

I told him to wait 5 days and then I would get it for him. 5 days later, it was released and I grabbed it for him.

I use DomainTools.com for all of my initial searches now since they have not yet tried to "taste" any of the domains I've searched for through them.

So wait a few days and look the domains up again.

So you're saying that the keywords of those domain names get a lot of searches, then?

And that your keyword research turned this up, so you thought they might be good to buy?

And somehow you find it suspicious that one of the other several million internet marketers on the planet might have thought the same thing?

The idiots at GoDaddy are total scammers! They steal premium domains from customers.

5 premium .com domains I created and owned for 10+ years got stolen from me by GoDaddy's 'Domain Sniping' service.

If any GoDaddy domains that YOU OWN are set for 'Annual Auto-Renew' and 3rd party "Snipes" are purchased against them, you will lose those domains to the unknown party who purchased the Snipes if you don't manually-renew your Auto-Renew domains.

Auto-Renew is fail-safe ONLY if no Snipes are pending and you will never know which domains of yours are pending a snipe, ensuring that GoDaddy generates revenue for itself.

So no matter what YOU lose over the entire life-cycle of your relationship with these scammers, win or lose, GoDaddy always wins.

  • I like namecheap too, but name is awesome too, both are excellent. Yes all track your domain searches and some use to actually post those searches.
