How do you address your customers?

This may seem like a silly question because it seems like nearly 100% of IMers use first names. I'm fine with that and I think it's also fine in most IM niches that deal with young or tech savvy people. It's the way of the "net".

But I deal with a big market, many of them older and not tech-savvy. Plus there's a minority of customers from many different countries. I send a thank you message to every customer and I'm sure there are some that are not keen on being called by their first name.

What's the best policy? Even if it's too formal for some, you can't really go wrong with using Mr. but then there's always that awkward thing for women, some of whom don't like "Ms". Then you get some foreign names where you can't be sure if they're male or female... in some cases it's even difficult to identify which is their given and family names!

Just about everyone is understanding about this type of thing. But does anyone else have the same issues?

I think it is still better to use first name because it brings out a personal touch. I use Mr. Lastname when it is far older than me.
