Yahoo! Video Pulling The Plug!

Dear Yahoo! Video User,

After careful consideration, we will be removing all general user-generated content upload capability and user-uploaded video from Yahoo! Video. As a result, your videos, user profiles, ratings, favorites, and playlists will no longer be available after March 14, 2011. User video content from Yahoo! Video that remains embedded on third party sites will no longer be playable after March 14, 2011.

Available on your profile page is a software utility that will allow you to download the videos you have uploaded to Yahoo! Video to your computer through March 14, 2011. You can find your profile by clicking on the 'My Video' tab or going to http://uk.video.yahoo.com/mypage.

Once you download your videos, you may choose to upload them to another site such as Flickr, which now allows video uploads. You can find out more here: Flickr: Explore video!.

Thanks for your understanding and thanks for being a part of Yahoo! Video.

If you have any questions about this change, please visit our FAQ section, or contact Customer Care.

Yahoo is having to do some major cutting back....

It seems they are going to be laying off about 600 people
      right before Christmas.

Rumor is they are losing alot of biz to Google and Facebook.

Whether that's true or not I don't know, but removing the
user video content might have something to do with the cutbacks.

I heard they were letting people go, but I didn't know about them shutting down the video site. It's too bad because Yahoo has always treated me right and I can't say the same for one of the other search engines, not to mention any names.

600 folks about to loose their job? That's bad news. Yahoo seems to be in some trouble indeed. So the only way to "stop the bleeding" is to make some drastic cuts. Online competition can sometimes literally be a cut throat business.

Yahoo's issue is called utter and gross mis-management! They have a history of running Yahoo projects aground that someone else would have made a mint on. Even when they buy a money maker, they transform it into a money loser. That's why I expect Associated Content to eventually take a dive into the red.

These latest Yahoo shutdowns just goes to prove yet again that institutional shareholders should have voted their current CEO off the Island and elected someone with ingenuity, business acumen, foresight and forward thinking abilities.

I dare say that if the current Yahoo CEO came on the WF and did a survey, she would have the answers to some of the issues that apparently have been puzzling her and the Yahoo senior management.

Oh, and watch out Yahoo mail users...

They should have taken Microsoft's deal when it was offered in 2008.

          Here's the multi-billion dollar offer:

BBC NEWS | Business | Microsoft wants to purchase Yahoo

It's amazing how greed gets in the way! It's so sad when that happens!

I also didn't understand why Yahoo didn't take up Microsoft's offer, since we were entering into a deep, deep recession (depression for many).

Sounds like Yahoo is doing some house cleaning and killing projects that are not adding big dollars to the bottom line.

    "Yahoo? What's yahoo?"

I bet that is what my kids will be saying...

    1. I don't use my yahoo email any more.
    2. I don't visit yahoo.com any more.
    3. I have become an avid skype user where I was an avid Yahoo IM user.
    4. I am dropping the last domain I have with them.

Getting rid of user generated content... well that sounds like a great idea. Remove any remaining viral or community based elements from Yahoo and they will surely pull through ;-)

They should have sold to MS... Yahoo may just be the next AOL.

I sure hope they don't get rid of Fantasy Football! LOL That's what I use Yahoo for.

I would hate it if they shut down Yahoo Answers, but I doubt they would ever do that.

How soon we all forget, If not for YaHoo where would the internet be? They were the true first to spider and organize the interwebs. Is Google or Bing better, well alot of odd things occuring at both, for example, too many times I see Google offering up PSA ads on popular websites (verses paid), and no adds at all on very popular terms like "finance". Is add inventory really that low? Are you using Yahoo, unbelievable services they offer, better if you have swallowed the Bing Google kool-aide how much "slap" power will they have over all publishers if YaHoo is allowed to die? In all I do I test in all browsers and use one S/E IE=Bing Google=Chrome FireFox=YaHoo Safarri=AOL. You owe it to yourself to keep YaHoo viable.

Probably too much market share by YouTube is why they are throwing in the towel on video.

At least Yahoo Site Explorer and related webmaster tools is good. From what I can tell it's the best way to look at the number of links you have and easy way to see how many pages you have indexed and other stuff.

They're cutting staff at Christmas time. That's a lovely present.
They're cutting the video, Yahoo Buzz, and they were going to cut del.icio.us and probably a bunch of other stuff. Now it looks like they are just going to sell del.icio.us, instead.
