What To Do With Thousands Of Blog Comments - Aprove Or Disapprove?

by unitec
29 replies
I run several blogs and on some of them I've thousands of blog posts awaiting for approval.
They are not detected as spam and have content like "great blog! keep up the great work!".
Nearly all of them are posted by robots with a keyword in the profile name.

Are they of any usefulness or is it better to delete them all?

Did you not install Akismet that took care of the crap for me - it's easy to get and set up - just have to go to the site, sign up and install the key they give you - well worth the time.

I installed Akismet and also "SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam".
The comments all passed captche and Akismet.

    > Approve mine, delete the rest

    Yes, I'll do.

I had one blog (just one) that had this. I was getting tens of comments per day, and Akismet let them through. Normally Akismet is fantastic.

You could just try turning comments off altogether for a week or two and hope the spammers dont come back. In any case I would delete everything that is not a useful comment, as leaving junk there will just attract others to do the same.

Mike the comments are not on the blog for the public to see.

If you approve them all at once, say hello to a crap load of junk comments from there on out.

Once you've been listed as a "I approve spam comments" website, there's no getting off that list.

When they have keywords where the persons' name should be, I always hit delete.

I would suggest you do the same.

Spam begets more spam, so don't give them a reason to think you are an easy mark. Or else, you may find tens of thousands of comments per month in your blog.

If someone uses a real name in the profile name, and they construct a comment that takes them more than 30 seconds to write, consider approving it, provided they did not fill it with URLs.

Can't we just do the old "change the name, change the comment, change or remove the link and approve it" trick?

Not for thousands but a few a day.

I get spammers on my blogs even with Akismet. So I make their spam into constructive comments and their links become nice new links to my other related blogs. Their spammy names become normal ones.

The spammer now does me a favour especially when I start a new blog and need comments straight away.

This was not my idea, I borrowed it off a respected member of this forum.

A lot of my spam goes down as the non robot spammers realise they're actually doing me a favour and wasting their own time.

Do what you like with them, it's your blog and you have the option to edit the entire spam post.

You see for me, I like these people, lots of nice comments from lots of nice different IP addresses. They help me.

Agree with tpw above. Most of them are just spam and has no benefits to your blog or website. Akismet should do the trick nicely in getting them out!

The OP doesn't want to stop comments altogether, just find a way of dealing with all the spam.

If no one knows how to login in then they won't get less comments, they'll get no comments.

        -Have trackbacks enabled
        -Approve them all
-See if you are getting trackbacks from these sites
-If you are, then in 1 week delete them all and repeat the process getting the spammers at their own game.
-If you aren't delete them all

For me, Akismet is usually pretty good at identifying spam. For the few that it misses, I will take the comment and enter it in Google in quotes. If it comes up hundreds or thousands of times, then yeah, it's spam.

I will also disapprove any comments with keywords in the name field and any that have a url in the body.

From an SEO standpoint, there really is no link to comments helping a blog rank well in the search engines.

So the only reason people leave those comments on their blogs is to either help their blogs seem more “popular” or because they simply do not care.

If I were in your place I would delete those comments. I feel that comments should add “value” to blog.

I’ve learned a lot throughout the years through comments left by other readers, and I would want my readers to have that same opportunity.

                Hi David,

That's not entirely true. When someone leaves a comment, Google notices, along come the spiders, the next time the spiders crawl your site they see something has been added. A lot of those comments are keyword rich and relevant to your blog. This will help with SEO.

That's one of the ways Bill was able to pull off his "original content penalty myth" thread you can read here.

Blog posts and forum posts are still content and if they are relevant to the subject being discussed, they will aid the site SEO wise.

Besides, if I alter a spam comment so it looks normal and links to another of my related sites, how can that not affect SEO?

                  Hey Richard,

You are right,SEO comments can help a site, but I was referring to the responses such as "Great post."

Those comments add little value to the readers and to the site. There other ways of adding SEO to a site without relying on a spammers. There is a lot of debate about how Google looks at comments, however I personally feel that there is not enough solid data out there to prove that it is a reliable SEO strategy.

However, the search engines are always changing and I am open to new methods to improve my Internet Marketing.

                  Best regards,
                  Devid

                    Oh yes,

I completely agree with you then.

Those "great post" comments are a complete waste of time. Sorry chap I thought you mean't comments in general.

It may be worth doing the trick, if you can call it that, that allows you to edit the spammy comments to your advantage though.

I actually recently had a spammer email me and complain I'd altered his message a number of times to reflect my site better .

I took great pleasure in returning his email

You've posted that exact comment in three different threads now.

Jonnibravo - Maybe they were posted by real people in real sense. So take it seriously before deleting it. Some people like posting same things again and again. Because of their knowledge or expertise. So try finding a solution of it. Cheers
Those people that post the same thing again and again are often times spammers. Like the very clever jackettom above.

I think the OP is aware of what's spam and what isn't.

i suggest deleting them all and using Akismet from now on. If the comments do not have enough 'meat' in them it adds little or no value to your blog and may turn new readers off.
