Not one plugin is essential if you don't need it to reach the goal you have set for your site. Confusing, thought so.

Honestly, there are about 4 plugins I use on practically all my blogs, all the rest depends on what I want to do with my blog. I always use All in one SEO (the same reason why you use Platinum SEO pack), then I have the Simple Google Sitemap plugin, the Easy Contact plugin ('cause I always want a contact page) and the WP Syndicator plugin ('cause I'm too lazy to build my own backlinks LOL).

Besides those it depends, do I want a page with youtube videos in my niche, I'll use Tubepress, if I need a privacy policy, I'll use Easy Privacy Policy, but I'll delete the plugin once the page is created.

The one rule I have is this: I ask myself the question "Am I adding this plugin because I want it or because I need it?". If I only want it, I usually don't get it, if I need it, I'll add it.

The same for my clients. I have a list of plugins I mention in my salespage, but if they don't need them all, I'll tell them so and don't add them. No need to slow down the blog for nothing.

Great advice here, Leslie. I pretty much use all the same plugins that you mention above, except for the Contact Form 7 plugin that I always deploy for my contact form.

    warriorspirit,

Once you install it on your blog and add all the accounts for the web2.0 sites, it'll send out a part of your posts (either automatically when you create the post if you set that up that way or manually) to these sites with a link to your original post. Easy way to create backlinks, like I said.

Hi Leslie, sorry for asking a dumb question, but could you give the exact name for this plugin, because when I seach it I get Bigfishgames and then syndication-widget. Is it the second one?

      Thanks for you help.

Totally agree with Leslie. Apart from a couple of plugins (Askimet, AllInOne SEO) none are essential for every blog.

They are only essential for tasks you wish to perform or features you would like in each blog. Installing a list of 10 "essential" plugins on every blog could do more harm that good if you don't need all the features, remember each plug in will interact with your database and therefore cause a slight lag for visitors and the more "slight lags" you have can become big lags. (slags to blags if you wish!!)

You asked for a good back up plug in and although I can't recommend one as I do manual sql back ups, I did find this post about the options: Choosing a Wordpress backup plugin that is right for you

Google XML Sitemaps is the only one from that list that I use.

It's a silly question. Use the plugins you need.
