QUESTION 4 AFFILIATES Which do you prefer?

Hey Guys,

A little back story...
I just did a mailing; (which I rarely do); for a product that I really believe in and it went rather well, (no complaints). Yet, there were a couple of things that stood out, (from the Vendor), that kinda struck me as a little 'odd'.

- They never posted an actual "schedule" of payment
- They never posted anything about w9/w8 information

I sent them an eMail recently asking about when payment would be made and their reply was essentially, "..an eMail will be going out... like most programs payment is post refund period... nobody gets paid without submitting w9 info..."

Now, mind you, I have no problem with any of that; (this is not a rant post). I mean, business is business; I get that.

But, I think I would have felt better about the whole thing if I had known all this information up front.

So, my questions to Affiliates...

How do YOU feel about this? Would you rather know everything up front?

- Up front info or you don't care?
- Do w9's and w8's make you shy away?
- If you know up front you're on the hook for taxes, do you promote less?
- Do you promote harder if all you're given is motivational emails?
- Does being hit up front with reality make you promote less?

I know these are strange questions, but I would greatly appreciate your honesty. I don't know that I've seen many threads addressing this topic.

Thanks for your input

When it comes to business, if you throw a curve ball mid-game I'm out. Be honest and up front and you'll go miles with me.

    - Up front info or you don't care?
    Always up-front
    - Do w9's and w8's make you shy away?
Simply said, they should rely on you to do your taxes. There's plenty of amazing products online, if they want to force me into doing that then I'll just go elsewhere.
    - If you know up front you're on the hook for taxes, do you promote less?
I believe my previous answer still applies here, but no I wouldn't promote more or less just because of taxes.
    - Do you promote harder if all you're given is motivational emails?
I'm not overly sure what you mean by this question so if you could rephrase it I'll be sure to edit my answer.
    - Does being hit up front with reality make you promote less?
Not at all, if you're honest and upfront with me beforehand, I'll be much more likely to promote your product more.

      Hi Will

Thanks for your input... with the above question, I was trying to stay PC

Basically, the "We're crushing it!" ... "Here's who's on the leader board".. "Here are the prizes you'll get"... "These are the winners"... those types of motivational eMails only.

No information about the fact that the Vendor is actually expecting you to produce w9/w8 info, (up front). Not that they should bang you over the head with it, but rather just a clear (one time) inclusion of that info along with the motivational stuff.

      Thanks

    Hi,

How do YOU feel about this? Would you rather know everything up front?

Of course I need to know all details, that's why I usually promote clickbank products or products sold through other famous systems like 1shoppingcart.com not some merchant who uses some affiliate system I don't recognize.

That way I won't worry about him not paying me, or asking for weird information to get paid after all the effort to promote...

    - Do w9's and w8's make you shy away?
Yes if you don't tell me what they heck they are, what I have to do exactly and provide it in a simple way for me to do. Like I said there's clickbank, cj.com all easy to find products to promote so if someone comes up with some new stuff... he has a lot to do I think.

    - If you know up front you're on the hook for taxes, do you promote less?
I won't promote such product. Probably cb too has taxes and that thing, so I don't actually know answer to this quesiton.

    - Do you promote harder if all you're given is motivational emails?
No! I promote a good product and promote it the way I want, no matter what the merchant tells me or recommends although I do read the emails... motivational emails for me don't work, better useful affiliate tips with great content like example including tools, tactics to sell more - such as the newsletter that I get from TruthAboutAbs.com he gives affiliates an affiliate course practically... plus seo strategies everything, that for me is motiviational emails not someone telling me "you can do it" "yes you can"....

    - Does being hit up front with reality make you promote less?
Not sure, I like said promote from trustworthy sites like cb.com, etc in other words I will check the product I'm promoting what system is it on... if it's cb.com, etc I will promote no probs.

The more upfront communication the better. As far as W-9's go... When a company tells me they will be issuing these it is NOT a red flag to me - quite the opposite. If they are in the U.S. they are required to send W-9 forms to the IRS and the affiliate for everyone that earns more than $600. I view it as a good thing that they understand and comply with this law.

I like to know all the “rules” up front and have real time posting of my sales. When I make a sale I like to be able to log into my account and see that sale. Now if they don’t pay out until after the guarantee period that’s cool, but say so up front. Clickbank lets you know up front what the rules are and you can see your sales and returns.

If they don’t post their rules up front, I don’t touch it; that also goes if there are no real time sales monitoring.

As someone else stated, vendors who pay out more than $600 to a single affiliate are required to submit W9s to the IRS. It should only concern you if they don't do it, I think.

As far as being "on the hook for taxes," I've got news for you. You already are. The law says you have to pay taxes on your income. Period. Do you think just because you earn your money through affiliate marketing someone else is paying them for you?

Sorry tecHead, I wasn't meaning to jump on you about that, but your choice of words makes it appear that you're saying you have no tax responsibilities unless the vendor is reporting your earnings, and that's simply not the case.

ok, that makes sense... my apologies for being misleading, as well... I was rushing through the post to get back to work, but meant it to be a question only from the point of some who might think... "you don't tell; I won't tell"

...but, the Vendor is telling so that puts you on the 'hook', (for lack of a better vernacular), to tell as well...
