It's A Great Life ... If You Work For It

OK, so I am sharing this blog post of mine (the Dr Mani commented on today) with Warriors. Yes, it all starts with a walk on Yamanobe No Michi, but there's an important message here that I hope can help a number of Warriors to succeed in 2011. Note: The important part is in the bottom half if you're in a hurry.

And, I've even included photos from the hike. Yes, it was as cold as it looks.

A few minor adjustments were called for this morning, and now all I can do is sit and wait to get the proof copy. So, today was a reward for months of work. Rieko and I grabbed a train for Sakurai in Nara prefecture and hiked the twisting Yamanobe No Michi to Tenri.

This trail (more like a cobbled together batch of trails, paths through orchards, steps up to temples, and roads) winds for about 14-15 km along the foothills of the mountains that separate Nara prefecture from neighbouring Mie. There's a bunch of temples, shrines, kaki (persimmon) trees, and mikan (Japanese oranges) orchards along the way. It makes for a great day out on the trail.

The air was crisp, but the sunshine and the climbs kept us warm. Being a Wednesday, the trail was mainly ours - with only the occasional pair of fellow hikers. This is one of the perks we enjoy since I started making our income from the Internet - taking off mid-week and avoiding the crowds. Which brings me to a VERY IMPORTANT point:

It's A Great Life ... If You Work For It

I see far too many who want to go the easy route. Far too many who just want to push a button and start making money. Far too many who want to put in the bare minimum of work, yet reap the rewards. Reality check! Nothing in life comes for free. I did not wake up one morning with money pouring into my account off the Internet like it was some kind of faucet that I simply had to open. I worked for it. I still work for it. And, some days, I work damned hard for it.

As I said earlier, I just finished putting in 2 1/2 months to write a book. Not because I'm a slow writer. Not because I only spent an hour or two a day writing. No, it was full days, writing and re-writing. Full days, taking screenshots, drawing illustrations, and editing them in Photoshop. Full days, assembling pictures, text, and page elements into a proper book. Full days, researching and finding the best examples to include in the book. Nothing good comes easy.

If you want to succeed in 2011, get ready to fully commit yourself to some hard work. It takes hard work to build a good venture that will make you a good income - long term and not just a spurt. But, once you've done that work ... there's the rewards. And those rewards are sweet!

Hope this helps a few get fully committed to doing something brilliant in 2011.

    Hi Kevin,

    Great inspiration here.

The 1 word that jumps out at me is commitment. When committed to your craft the cool part is that things DO become easier over time.

It's when you waver that everything feels like a struggle. When you have intense passion for your purpose obstacles seem to melt, at least in my experience

But the key concept to keep in mind is 100% commitment. Sacrifice, remembering that sacrifice means releasing something of a lower nature to make room for something of a higher nature.

    Have a powerful day!

    Truly awesome post. Well said.

The things in life that come easiest aren't worth it. You only get that wonderful satisfaction from hard work and a job well done. Hard work doesn't have to mean grinding, unpleasant work -- just focused, committed action. It's nothing to be afraid of.

Love your message Kevin, I'm finding that no matter how you slice it, it does take a lot of hard work to get a consistent income.

    Thanks for posting this.

Only 2 1/2 months??? I wanna know how you did that!

I just wrote and published my first book this year and it took me 9 months, from the time I put the first sentences on paper to the final, finished product. Of course, that included editing time (I hired an independent editor), and production time (which included design, etc.).

Of course, the first time you do anything, it's a learning curve. I've created a series and have three more books mapped out. It should only take 4-6 months next time.

Still, given that it takes anywhere from 18-24 months for a traditional publisher to put out a book (and that 18 months doesn't start until the writer has handed over the manuscript!), 9 months is incredibly fast. And I'm very happy with the final, finished product.

Kevin's book is only 3 pages.

        Just kidding!

Kevin, great post! If you don't mind me adding one point that complements yours ... a lot of people only want to do the fun parts of becoming a success. It isn't all fun, no matter what you do to earn money. If you trip over the parts that aren't fun, that's where you stay until you're ready to finish the job.

Well, that explains it! Mine is 260 pages. Obviously, my work ethic is better than his.

But if the point of IM is to work Smarter, Faster, Cheaper... Wait, guess that means I'm not so smart.

          Ummm.....

Michelle, if you want something to compare, my last book was 514 pages and took 4-5 months to write. That included making a lot of graphics and doing a lot of research and testing. That was my third book though, the first one is the hardest ... it was for me anyway.

A sticking point that I continually must force myself over. There are certain things that seem scary (like setting up a membership site) yet, when you roll up your sleeves and do it, you realize wasn't all that bad after all.

What an inspiring post, Kevin. You deserve every bit of the success that you have today due to the consistent and focused work you have put in.

You're absolutely right about having to work hard for success, especially during the initial "set up" phase. There's no getting around it, but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy the journey along the way. I know that your sense of satisfaction at having accomplished something great is immense and very fulfilling, and this intangible, unseeable reward is something that the lazy "lottery mentality" type people you make reference to in your post will never be able to experience for themselves (unless they change, of course).

Exactly. Which is why I write about something I'm passionate about and love teaching. It makes every workday a lot more fun. In fact, I often have to drag myself away from the computer after a long stint - especially when I get inspired by something I'm doing.

The other day, I spent about 6 hours trying to find just the right image for an example. Wasted 6 hours? Some may think the time could be better spent, but I feel damn good about the image I finally found.

Same here. It's usually setting up things like membership sites and shopping carts that I put off until I can't any longer. Lately I've just been outsourcing that stuff. Still have to learn how to use it, but into each life...

I'm glad I'm not the only one that does things like that. I think I spent 6 hours finding the handful of images I used in that first movie I made in your video lab workshop.

What? An Easterner now? We do need to catch up. Skype me.

Not today though. I've got my main computer pulled apart and rearranging my office. New computer being added to the stable. This one will run 3 monitors and has enough juice to speed process my videos.

Great post, Kevin. Sometimes it is not even about the money, but more about the freedom that working online can provide. I think some people lose sight of the fact that IM is about giving yourself a lifestyle that you love and not just about how much you make on Clickbank that day.
