How do you give access to web programmers?

Hi everyone,

When you outsource your web design/programming, how do you give access to the programmers? Is there a safe way of giving information (User name/pass)? Do you create a special section for them?

Thanks!

Create a new ftp account for them giving them access to the folder they need to work in.

    Thanks guys!

    Regarding FTP access:
If the web programmer needs to install scripts, giving access to public_html is ok?

Most of the time it's enough. There are very rare configurations where CGIs have a path outside public_html.

Give them a temporary access or if you have a reseller account you can give the full access of only the domain you want your programmer to work on. However, an FTP for the folder is enough if there is no database involve else tell your programmer the username and password of the database for your project.

Speaking from the other side of this, if you need a programmer to sort out a problem for you, please be prepared to give them the access they need.

It's a pain trying to sort problems when the site owner won't give the access that you need.

For example, problems are sometimes related to file and/or directory rights and guest account often don't have permission to change those.

My best advice is to find a good programmer and stick with them. As the trust builds between you, this becomes a non-issue.

    Cheers,

Also, if trusting the programmer with login info is an issue, you probably shouldn't have that person writing programs for you.

I'm with Neil on this one. Normally when I am hired to install a script, create a new program or repair something I am given full access.

Every now and then I do get a client that does not want to give me the access I need to do my job quickly and easily. The majority of the time I just give them their deposit back and move on. It's just not worth dealing with a paranoid client.

Now here is something that may help paranoid clients become less paranoid.

First go to Google and search on the programmers name. See if he or she has caused any problems to others.

Hire programmers off of forums you frequent. For example. The Warrior Forum. I hear it has several very good programmers that post.

By hiring a programmer off of popular forums you can read many of their past posts and get to know them a little before you hire them. If they are known on the forum and they do screw you over you can easily let others know.

Hope the above helps you in your search for a programmer.

    Everyone,

Thank you very much! Its been very informative. I'm new to outsourcing projects so I thought it would be wise to do some research and get advice on what others do. I will do my due diligence and work with someone I feel comfortable with.

    Thank you!
